HT1296 How do I sync my iPad to my new Mac without loosing all my apps, music, videos..ect?

I recently bought a Macbook Pro and I wanted to sync my iPad (Which has all my music, videos, ect..) with it.
I transfered my purchases but my other music and videos did not transfer, as I did not purchase them.
Is there any way that I can sync them on my Macbook with out going to my old computer (which hardly works) and actually copying the file
to the Macbook?

You must first sync the iPhone with the old Mac as you normally do, then move the entire iTunes Library from the old Mac to the new one.
An iPhone can only be synced with one computer at a time. When you first sync the iPhone with the new Mac, you will "erase and sync". This will erase the entire phone first, then sync it with the content you moved from the old Mac.

This should be a pretty good guide for setting up the iPad with a new computer and for keeping your content.
Don't forget to authorize the new computer as well. Launch iTunes and go to Store>Authorize this Computer.

    1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
Make sure that you move your iTunes library from the old computer to the new one as well for all of your music.
Here is an article that can help you with that.

Hi, I have just purchased a Macbook, but my iphone is currently synched to my old pc. How can I now synch it with my new mac without losing all the apps/music etc on my phone? Ta

The easiest way is to copy the iTunes folder from your old PC to your MB (put it in the Music folder as a subfolder), along with the other valuable data on the old PC. Or restore it from a backup of your old PC. Then authorize iTunes on the MB to the same account you had on the PC. When you sync it will warn you that your content will be deleted, but it will be replaced with the same content from the MB. Before syncing you should also make sure there is at least one entry in iCal and Address book on the MB (assuming you sync to Outlook or equivalent on the PC) to assure that your contacts and calendar entries will move over correctly.
Al alternative that is less effective is to connect the iPhone to the MB without syncing, and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the iTunes File menu. This willl copy purchases music, videos and apps, but not ripped tracks from the iPhone to the MB.

  • How do I sync my ipad to a used laptop without losing all my apps, music and photos stored on my ipad?

I have had my Ipad 2 for a few years and have stored all my music and photos on it. I recently was given my dad's laptop and would like to use it to store my photos and music now.  How do I sync my Ipad to the laptop without losing all my stuff?

    Hello kactfl
The first thing is in iTunes; make sure to check the box in Preferences that prevents syncing devices automatically. Then check out the 2nd article, it will get all of your purchased content like apps and music into iTunes. And then the last article will assist with getting the pictures off the iPad onto the computer.

If the answer to the above question is "yes", FIRST, set up a backup of your new computer before you do anything else so the next time your computer breaks you will not be in the same situation. Backup solutions are numerous and inexpensive, and there is absolutely no excuse in the Third Millennium not to have one.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

You can either transfer the purchases to the new computer, or you can set the iPhone to manual mode and add the new songs while keeping the old. The article will go over how to do both options.
As far as I am aware an iPhone that has been associated with one library cannot be assoicated with a new one without iTunes wanting to erase and reload content from the local library. This normally means the loss of non-store purchases unless they are recovered first with third party tools. Setting the device to manual management on anything other than the "current" home library of the device will trigger the deletion of content.
