HT1329 Playlist transfer to new computer

I've moved all the songs to my new computer.   To save time reorganizing, can all the playlists be moved also?

The playlists are stored in the iTunes library database file.  To preserve your complete iTunes library, including things like playlists, ratings, playcount, etc., what you need to do is move the entire iTunes folder, from your user account home folder to the new computer.  This includes your iTunes Media folder with your song files.
If you have already manually added the song files to a new iTunes library on the new computer (which creates a new iTunes library database file), you are beyond the point where you can easily get your old playlists back.
If you still have access to your old computer with its iTunes setup intact, you can follow this procedure to move your complete iTunes folder to the new computer. Then, iTunes on the new computer will look exactly like iTunes on the old computer.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
The procedure to move the complete iTunes folder is the one called External drive.
Although the procedure has many parts and steps, some of them may not apply to your situation.  At the high level, you are (1) consolidating your iTunes files so that they are all located in the iTunes folder.  If you have been using the standard settings for iTunes, all of your iTunes files may already be in the iTunes folder. Then, (2) copying that iTunes folder to an external drive.  And (3) copying that iTunes folder from the external drive to the new computer, to take the place of the existing iTunes folder.  If you know how to set up a network connection between the two computers, you can transfer the folder over that connection directly from one computer to the other (with no external drive needed).
The next time you run iTunes on the new computer, it will use your old iTunes foider and it will look like iTunes running on your old computer, with all of your songs and playlists.

  • HT1329 I just downloaded iTunes to a new computer.  It's been a while since I used iTunes on my old computer.  I don't see any of my playlists on the new computer.  What is the easiest way to transfer my playlists without having to recreate each one?

I just downloaded iTunes to a new computer.  It's been a while since I used iTunes on my old computer, so the new one has a totally different user interface.  I signed on to my account and saw my music but I have no playlists on the new computer.  What's the easiest way to replicate or restore my playlists as I had them in the old computer and in my iPod?

OK, thanks for the response.  I'm copying it onto a memory stick to transfer it to the new computer.  Still have two questions:
    1. Since there is already an iTunes folder on the new computer, created when iTunes was downloaded, where exactly do I copy the old folder onto the computer so that iTunes can find it?  In the old interface, there used to be a field where one could designate the path to find music and I don't see that in the new interface.
Assuming the above takes care of putting my playlists onto the new computer...
    2.  How do I add music that is currently stored in a back up file but was not on my old computer's drive?  I'm worried that I would have to add these one by one somehow, and there are a lot of songs.
    Thanks again.

How do you transfer a large playlist to a new computer so that it stays in the same order?

    Hey HalSF,
iTunes allows you to sync music with your devices in several different ways, including by playlist. See the iPhone user manual for how to -

  • How do I transfer my playlists to a new computer?

When I try to transfer my playlists to a new computer, my Ipod Touch gives me an error that it can only have one home computer.  How do I transfer the data from my Ipod touch to my new computer, as I don't want to use my old computer anymore?  In terms of data, I want all of the cd's loaded into iTunes and all the playlists from my old computer moved to the new computer.

They do if you buy a Mac. They have a migration utility. I'm not sure that migrating your data is really their responsibility though
As for size, if it fits on a touch, there are USB flash drives it will fit on. Or external hard drives. Or use a network cable.

I am trying to move my library and playlists to a new computer by burning to CD's. However, I followed the directions by going to File and then Library - then they said to go to burn CD(s) - I DO NOT have that option for some reason. How do I do this? I have done the library sharing thing but I am getting rid of my primary computer and am afraid I will lose the library.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • How do I move both my contents and playlists to my new computer?

How do I move both my contents and playlists to my new computer?  I have tried the suggestions in previous posts of copying the library and music folders into the itunes folder on my new pc.  I don't have the option to file>library>import anything.  The only thing that transfers, even on home sharing is purchased music.  No music loaded from CD's and no playlists.

Have CS5 on current PC, Win 7 64bit; how get *.exe to transfer to new computer after remove from old one?

Baffled by multiple links; found one I think(?) I need. CS5 12.1.
It's basic, so I assume that one goes with CS5 Design Standard, but do not

  • HT1420 How to copy playlists to a new computer

Once you have saved your iTunes folder from a previous computer onto an external hard drive, how do you re-create your old playlists on a new computer with your saved iTunes music folders/files?

As long as you move the iTunes folder with all its contents to the new PC you should have all your playlists.
If you have any music tracks outside the iTunes media folder you must consolidate your library first so that everything is in the iTunes folder.
Then just install iTunes on the new PC.
Rename the iTunes folder created by iTunes in music.
Then copy the old iTunes folder into Music on the new PC so that it replaces the one you renamed  and you should be good to go.

  • How do I transfer my playlists to a new computer without transferring all my music from the external hard drive?

I would like to transfer my itunes to a new computer but only see instructions to transfer all my music over including the playlists.  All my music is currently stored on an external hard drive because it is a very large library of over 30GB so don't really want the music taking space on my laptop but want to have the playlists transferred over and be able to access my music library on the new computer through the external hard drive.  Any idea how to do this?

As Chris says... but if the media is on an external drive as above then you also need to make sure the external drive has the same drive letter on the system you are moving to or iTunes won't be able to find the files.

  • How do i transfer my playlist to a new computer

how do I transfer my playlist from one computer to another the Apple rep at a store told me to export and save file as a m3u or m3u audio file than drag into itunes on my new computer when I did it none of the songs came with the file name

    Hello ja627,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing when trying to transfer your playlists.  To transfer a playlist, you will need to transfer the music and playlist file separately.
You can transfer your music using Home Sharing or an alternative method provided in the article below, and next, you will have to take the additional step of exporting and importing your playlists to add them to your new computer:
    Transferring playlists
If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File >Library> Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.
You can find this in the section titled "Home Sharing" in the following article:
