  • Adding text to iPhoto picture collection for genealogy purposes

I have over 1,000 old family photos that I'd like to label permanently with respect to year, people in the picture, location, etc. I know I can add a caption on iPhoto, but if I make a copy of the photos for other people in my family to view, how can I make sure that the text file comes up with the proper photo so that when they view it on whatever picture organization system they might have on their PCs (such as Picasa), they can see the details of the photo without a lot of effort. Is it possible to use a text watermark in this case? Or is there a simpler method that doesn't require that I open the photos into another editor like Photoshop? Please give me some suggestions! Thanks.

Select the pics in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. In the resulting window check the box at Titles and keywords and the Titles, keywords +and captions+ (tho' not explicitly mentioned in the export window) will be written to the metadata of the files, which will be picked up by any photo app on any system.
Is it possible to use a text watermark in this case?
iPhoto has no ability to put text onto a photo. For that you'll need an external editor. In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    _[The Gimp|http://www.gimp.org/macintosh>_ also free
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    [Pixelmator|http://www.pixelmator.com> ($60 approx.)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.8 and anything else that needs to be updated.  After the installations go to /Library/Preferences - trash the com.apple.Preview.plist file.  Repair permissions, restart your computer and empty the trash.  Your Preview issue should now be resolved.

  • Adding text to a picture.

    Hello, everybody!
I enjoy reading Apple Discussions a lot. Finally, I got the question I cannot find an answer for.
My mother in law needs to add text to a picture and then post edited material online or print it out. Does she need to use Aperture for this purpose or something else different?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can't do this with iPhoto. You'll need an external editor such as Graphic Coverter, Photoshop Elements or Seashore , but there are any others. Search on MacUpdate

  • Adding text to iphoto book in folio

I just started making a book. It looks like it is going to work well, however, I am having trouble entering text into the text boxes. The boxes are uneven and the type is too small. I have changed the size of the font and that works in one of the boxes but in the other boxes there is no room to type a full sentence. How do I change the box templates so that I can write in one box? The blue text boxes are unevenly spaced under the pictures. I am using the folio layout. I saw a sample at the Apple Store and the sentences under the pictures were even and looked just like the text from a book. Am I using the wrong layout?
Thanks for your help. I am trying to get this done before Christmas!!!!

    Pamela:
There is no way to resize the text boxes. In the Folio theme there are three text boxes, the file name or title, caption, description and the copyright fields. You'll just have to select the size that gets the full amount of text that you need in the box. It's the nature of the beast.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Adding Text to Your Photo

I am trying to add text onto my photo but can not find the function. Is this allowable?

And Martin S has come up with a way to do this using iPhoto as a work around - see http://simnet.is/klipklap/iphoto/adding-text/
Hi Larry, I was following your step by step guide for adding text to iphoto.
Sorry - as I said Martin S developed and posted this workflow - I only reported it - I personally have never used it - I do know that some others have used it successfully
Also any of the photo editors on the web page I referenced in my original post will add text

  • Adding Text on Pictures

Hi, is there anyway I can use iPhoto 6 to add text on a picture?
I've posted my pictures on my website and I would like to add my name on them to prevent it from being used by somebody else.
    Thank You in advance.

    JES:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What type of web site are you adding the photos to? Is it an iWeb or HomePage site or one you are creating yourself and uploading the photos manually? If it's the last then you can use a watermarking application to batch add your copyright notice on each photo before uploading to the site. Just go to VersionTracker.com and do a search for "watermark".
All of the applications require you to have the files outside of iPhoto and work on a drag and drop basis. So you'll need to export those files you want watermarked to a folder on the desktop and then batch edit them there.
You could use a 3rd party editor like Photoshop Elements or GraphicConverter and edit them thru iPhoto by setting it as the editor of choice in iPhoto's General preference section.
    Do you Twango?

  • I would like to see the added keywords under the picture like iPhoto does it. Is that possible? I cannot find an answer

I would like to see the added keywords under the picture like iPhoto does it. Is that possible? I cannot find an answer in Aperture 3.2.1

Hello Wontolla, I meant the Aperture main menu, there is a sub menu "View", see the Screenshot:
Set all flags in the Metadata Display submenu as I did,  to show Metadata in Viewer and Browser, and then select "Customize"
Pick the Metadata fields you want to display for all views.
Make sure, that "Contents -> Keywords" is checked.

  • Adding text to a photo in iphoto

How do you add text to a smart album photo?  Also, when syncing to my iphone, I want the text to appear.  I am building a tropical plant field guide.

iPhoto has no capability of adding text onto an image.  For that you'll need a 3rd party image editor setup as the  external editor in iPhoto.
Some Image Editors that support  layers:
    Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac - $79
    Rainbow Painter - $30
    Imagerie - $38
    Acorn - $50
    Pixelmator - $60
    Seashore - Free
    Portraits and Prints - Free
    GIMP for Mac - Free

  • HT1338 I have added photos from iPhoto into Photo Stream and enabled my iCloud but I can't see any uploaded photos. Does this sound right?

I have added photos from iPhoto into Photo Stream and enabled my iCloud but I can't see any uploaded photos. Does this sound right?

Enable PhotoStream in iCloud first, then add the photos to PhotoStream in iCloud. Of course, you will need PhotoStream also enabled on your other devices also in order to view them.

  • Adding text to a photograph

    Hi,
My question is in 2 parts really:
    1) Once the photos are uploaded into iphoto, is there anyway of adding text to the photo?  Say a title, or details of something about the picture that I wouldn't want to forget?  If so, how can I do this?
2)My camera has the ability to add text to pictures.  If I did this, when I came to uploading them into iphoto, would the text come with the pictures, and if so, where would it be displayed?
3)When exporting the photographs, to share with others or print, would I be able to disable the text, so it doesn't show on the photograph?
    Thanks very much.

in iPhoto there are several ways to add information about a photo - a title - a decscription - keywords - putting it in an album = these are all metadata and local to your computer - you can choose to include or not include them when you export a photo
if you want to actually put text on a photo then you must use a thir party program (Preview can do this - Annotate) or external editor - one you add text to a photo it is there and the old information behind the text is gone
as to what you camera does - read the camera manual - if it puts text in the EXIF ro IPTC fields and if iPhoto reads thos fields then that information will be part of the iPhoto database - it it puts text directly on a photo then it is part of the photo

  • I saved a PDF doc in adobe and then added text to the form. But every time I try an email it it only

I saved a PDF doc in adobe and then added text to the form. But every time I try an email it it only sends the original form without text. Once I've changed a doc in Adobe, how can I save it so that I'm able to use it with added text and notes? Also, I'm using a new iPad.

If you are using those apps or websites, they are likely viewing the PDF using iOS' built in PDF previewing, which will not show annotations and markup to the PDF. We have informed Apple of this issue, but do not have any insight into whether or when they will fix it.
Regarding the qustion about importing pictures, Adobe Reader does not provide any capabilities to import pictures into a PDF. To do this, you'll need to use Acrobat, available on your desktop computer.

  • Entire iPhoto pictures missing from external hard drive.

Hello, I have already posted this problem but I'm not sure it was clear enough and not getting the response I needed. I had a Jan 2011 white laptop came with snow leopard, and I upgraded to Lion. A good few months ago, my daughter splashed a small amount of water on it, whilst it was turned on and open. I dried off the water I could see, and the mac was still working so I assumed it was ok. (At this time it had a very low battery and was not connected to a power source) Later on in the afternoon, forgetting about the incident, I did the unthinkable and plugged in the power lead. Result: nothing, the laptop would not boot up, I tried a few times, even holding down the power key for extended time but nothing. I eventually gave up  and got myself a new macbook 10.9.2 then two days ago, took the old burnt out laptop to a place to get them to remove the hard drive and fit it in a case for me with a usb connection. They done this, I  got home and connected the external hard drive off my old mac into my new mac, success I could see it but when I tried launching I photo from the external HD (old lap top) on my new mac. (I didn't realise there would be a software issue which is obvious now)The new mac with mavericks said it could not open iphoto. So I tried searching for the photo files manually on my external hard drive (but there was nothing)  The user files were completely empty. It showed hardly any bytes (indicating I had nothing) My itunes files where gone too, and I could find no files I needed that were originally on my old (mac/ now external harddrive) The only items that were intact were the documents in the documents folder and the applications. I took the external hd back to the repair shop and they said they could not find them. They said they would charge me £100 for an attempted recovery  of data which I 'm now not sure what to do, as I'm unsure what has happened. I desperately would like to get some of the data back, i;e (some files from desktop and photos)  as frustratingly  it was not backed up....
    My questions are:
1.Would trying to open iphoto, and itunes from my  external HD with earlier software in  10.9.2 Mavericks cause me to lose data (including desktop files) ?
    2. Could the water damage be the issue for destroying the data? (although other data is still there)
    3. Is it likely the files are still on my external hd and I just can't see them (although the low bytes seems to indicate perhaps not)
    4. Is there a reliable data recovery program out there someone can recommend I can get and use that may recover the files, and do I download it on my new mac, and direct it to the external hd?
    5. Would apeture locate the missing iphoto picture files  from the external HD and integrate it into the library on my mavericks?
    6. Could the problem be caused by leaving the HD in my old(water damaged) laptop for so long before I tried rescuing it?
Any light on situation much appreciated. Apologies if this issue already been aswered, I did scour but did not see help I needed.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi  T,
Thanks again for reply.  Just checked my mac for the first time without the external HD attached. I had a hard time trying to get back into this site on my new mac. Now I keep getting a pop up that says (https:// discussions.apple.com bad gateway) with ok button every every 30 secs or or something after that I can't type except if I click ok. Prior to that I had some message telling me something about proxy server gateway no access or something. Not happenign on other sites so perhaps just a random error, (hope I have now not picked up a bug or another insidious thing from some site whilst trying to resolve my old HD probs....)
    Extremely annoying!!
Well I checked as you asked. This is the process.(if you can tell me how to take a screen shot I will do it, but at moment I don't know how to do that exactly)
At the moment I have got my HD showing on my desk top Top RH corner, like they used to in the good old days before it all changed. I do this, because everything is conveniently placed in one place. Call me old fashioned I guess..
(Not to change the thread but this pop up thing is driving me mad...)
If I doubleclick on that by default it opens with five folders in it, I;E applications, library, system, user information, users.
    When I click on Users.
It is here I find the user  file  with a user name that I have NEVER entered into this new mac, (especially with old MAC HD attached as I did not want any confusion) I even re-named my  old HD (OLD mac HD)
This new user file even has the icon of  a HOUSE instead of a folder, which is something off older OS as far as I know, I never saw it in mavericks before attaching this encased contraption which is just a metal box as far as I see that holds my old HD, but annoyingly done by someone that may not have known what they were doing..
Why the heck is it there? It should not be there!
When I click on this old (home folder) as that is what it used to be, and that was the name of my OLD HD before it got the name (old mac HD) which now I think of it, was not changed by me by default... which is a thought.. I only added the word OLD to it..
Well it has all my default folders such as desk top, docs, movies, pictures ect.. When I click on pictures I  have my new iphoto library and another folder called root which has the salvaged files I saved there from the recovery software Stellar Pheonix which I downloaded a couple of days ago but can't actually open with preview anyway. I tried to do it with an old version of CS 5 photoshop to see if that would work, but I could not get photoshop to open in mavericks even after java update)
The interesting thing is is: if I go to system preferences in my dock I click on users it only has the user folders I specified that should be there on my new mac.
now peeved.  and this annoying pop up.....Situ does not seem to be getting any better!
Instructions please how to post screenshot..
    PS sorry about LONG POST

  • Adding text to photo

I would like to add text to photos - that is have the text appear on the photo itself. Can I do this with iphoto?
    Thanks, M.

Not easily with iPhoto only, but Martin S. has directions for doing so here:
    http://simnet.is/klipklap/iphoto/adding-text/
Rather easier is to use an external editor for the job: starting with free and working up:
    Seashore
    Graphic Coverter
    Acorn
    Photoshop Elements
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Adding Text Effects to Photos in iMovie 09

I am making a movie in iMovie 09 from photos. I have 940 pictures with lead in effects and text over the pictures. I have not added music yet and am about half way through the 940 photos and iMovie will not allow me to add text to any more pictures. Is their a limit on how many pictures can be in the show? the movie is currently 1 hr and 10 minutes long. Possibly their is a time limit? Any suggestions are welcome.....

    blakespot,
Make sure you click in the margin away from the main text body to avoid accidentally pasting or creating the text box inline.
You can also select the text box and go:
    +Inspector > Wrap (3rd tab) > Object Placement > Floating+
To make the picture and caption stick together, select both:
    +Menu > Arrange > Group+
