  • Clean install? Restoring Time Machine backups?

First let me say I'm relatively new to Mac, I've graded my iMac (Late 2013) to the latest OS, Yosemite. To say that they computer is dragging is a major under statement. Applications such as AutoCAD, anything Adobe (Photoshop, InDesign), Word, etc. drag. By "drag" I mean upon launch the icon bounces for a good 3-4 minutes and the program does not load. Switching profiles? Forget it, spinning pin wheel, 10 min. in I just restarted it. Its unbearable. I assume that I will have to do a clean install. Will Time Machine restore applications, or is this for documents only? Most of my software is from online subscriptions not disks which means this going to be a serious endeavor to wipe the computer and start all over. If anyones has a better idea of how to go about this, I'm all ears.

    Hey spodonahue,
It seems like you are saying that your Mac is running a little slower than normal. Here is an article for you that will help you address this issue:

  • Can you do a "clean install" after an auto update install of 10.10?

Can you do a "clean install" after an auto update install of 10.10?
    If yes, how?

I suppose it depends on what you define as a “clean install."
You can erase the startup drive and install Yosemite in Recovery.
Boot into Recovery (cmd-r on startup).
From there, use Disk Utility to Erase the startup volume (Macintosh HD).
Quit Disk Utility, then Install OS X.
You should obviously have a backup prior to attempting this.

Can I back up using Time Machine if I have some files already on the ExHD, or do I need a clean ExHD to use Time Machine?

If you try to use a new disk with time machine, it will try to reformat your EXHD. so I would save the items on your EXHD before backing up with time machine or partitioning your EXHD in disk utility

    Hi,
    Try Target Disk Mode
OS X Yosemite: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
    There is also Migration Assistant.
OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device

  • After using time machine my users folder cannot be seen, but all information is still intact. Where did it go?

After using time machine my users folder cannot be seen, but all information is still intact. Where did it go?

This is a new feature or bug if you want to call it that in OS X 10.9.3
Until Apple fixes this, here is a temporary work around.
Copy and paste the following command in the Terminal and then hit Enter, followed by your password.
    sudo ln -s /Users /Users\ Folder; ln -s /Users/Shared /Users/Shared\ Folder
This will put a link to the Users folder called "Users Folder" on your Hard Drive and a link to the Shared folder called "Shared Folder" inside of the Users folder.

  • How can I do a clean install after doing an update using a volume purchase license?

My question is this:  We purchased 20 licenses of Lion through the Volume Purchase program.  2 of the users installed it first doing an upgrade - now they have decided they want to do a clean install.  How can they do a clean install - I can't give them the installer cd we created because I have been informed by Apple Sales that it will use another license from our quantity of 20 - but they offered no other solution.
We would rather not waste another license just to do a clean install.
    Thanks!

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
This method relies on the Internet Recovery system. This is the standard procedure when you don't have an installer or Lion came pre-installed.

  • IPhoto won't open after clean install followed by Time Machine restoration of data.

    Hello.
I've just completed a clean install of OS X Yosemite followed by a restoration of my data from a Time Machine backup on my Mid 2010 iMac i3 3.2GHz.
Since the install iPhoto will no longer open. The icon in the dock bounces for a short while and then I receive the following error: iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. It then shows problem details and system configuration, the top part of which I post below:

I then get a long list of binary image data which I haven't posted here (but can if required).
I believe the version of iPhoto I have is 9.6 as that update was installed a short while before I did the clean install of the OS.
I would try reinstalling the iPhoto again but cannot see a way to uninstall or to download again from the app store.
Has anybody seen this behaviour before and/or know of a fix or workaround so I can get my iPhoto program working again please?
    Many thanks for your time.
    Alex

Looking at that report I would reinstall iPhoto as a first step:
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • How to get iPhoto and iTunes to a clean installed Yosemite from Time Machine

I wiped the Hard Drive and clean installed to OS X Yosemite. For Some reason, some of my Time Machine back ups disappeared or got deleted and it wasn't even full. I had back ups from 2011 and now it only starts from 2013 of June.
Next....when I try to restore my other apps(like iPhoto and my iTunes) I doesn't give that warp space effect in the background. It gives me the window layer effect but I just see the same mountain background on the desktop as the default Yosemite(unless thats how its suppose to look like that?) I can't restore using Time Machine because the little lines at the right are red (see screen shot) and it won't let me restore, and if i go back by using the arrows, if freezes. So,
I don't know how to install the old iTunes and iPhoto on my existing clean installed Yosemite from my Time Machine.
    Can someone help me?

@ LarryHN Thank you ver much for you help I understand now that you just can't copy over the old library(got it)
I had the latest version of iPhoto before I cleaned installed.
The link you gave me was most informative and I want to thank you. But still problems arrive.
This came up and I don't know which one to pick

  • Can a Server install alter a Time Machine backup's permissions?

I'm trying to change a server from Advanced to Simple, so I'd planned to:
    1) Run a final Time Machine backup
    2) Shut the server down
    3) Reinstall Leopard Server from scratch
    4) Reinstall any/all needed apps or files using Time Machine.
The first snag I ran into was that after step 3) all files in the Time Machine backup seemed to have had their permissions altered so that I could not access the folders and could not make changes to the files.
Based on help from someone else I was able to find out that an ACL is in effect on these files.
I also had some files stored on the Time Machine Backups drive as regular files....these do not appear to have the ACL applied.
When I couldn't figure out how to deal with that I went ahead and did a Full Restore using the Leopard Server Install DVD. This went without a hitch and the Time Machine backup files no longer appeared to have the ACL applied.
So can installing Leopard Server using all defaults where possible (excl. server name and such) and using the Simple server options alter the existing backups on a Time Machine Backups disk like this? Is there something I can/should be doing differently to get this to work "correctly"? Reinstalling from scratch again is still an option if there's something different to try.
    Thanks in advance!

P.S. I was expecting to have to do some manual reconstruction on the mail server that runs on this box, but didn't expect issues like this so any help is appreciated!

  • Can I Install My ML Time Machine Backup on Snow Leopard?

I have a Time Machine backup with Mountain Lion on it.  Can I install this straight onto a Mac with Snow Leopard on it?  If so, does it install the hidden Lion Boot Partition as well?

    No.

  • I just installed Mountain Lion on my iMac that was previously running Snow Leopard. Bugt I found that some key applications no longer work, so I would like to go back to snow Leopard. I can't use time machine backups for this. what can I do?

I just installed Mountain Lion on my iMac. But In was dismayed to find that my Canon scanner software (Canoscan LIDE500F)no longer works. Nor do any of my MS offce applications. I tried to use time machine to reinstall Snow Leopard (my previous operating system), but unfortunately my time machine backups did not include system software. Also, the original system install disk that came with my iMac would not allow me to install Snow Leopard in place of Mountain Lion. I would appreciate it if somebody could tell me how to solve this problem.

The reason your Office doesn't work is because it is PowerPC code. If you will upgrade the 2004 Office to 2011 Office then that will work.
I don't understand how you managed to get your Time Machine backup to not backup the system.
Now if you still what to downgrade you will have to erase the disk and reinstall Snow Leopard. Most likely all of your application and then restore your data from Time Machine.
To me it sounds like it would be easier to upgrade your software and stay with Mountain Lion instead.

  • Can I still use my "old" Mac after restoring Time Machine backup to a new Mac?

    Hi guys.
Will I still be able to use my old Macbook Pro 2008 (Leopard) after restoring his latest Time Machine backup on a new Macbook Pro 2012 (Lion)?
Using Setup Assistant and transfering data using Time Machine creats the same Account on the new machine that was on the old one. I just don't know how the old machine will react towards his clone. I don't want to make a mess...
    Please let me know.
    Thanks

It should work if the drive is connected directly to your Mac. That is not the same as saying that it will work.
Since Mountain Lion was just released, it might make sense to hold on a few weeks and watch the forums for new and unforeseen issues before you dive in.

  • Can't find 2011 Microsoft Office product key after using Time Machine

I just upgraded my macbook pro to a 512gb crucial ssd. In order for me to do this without downloading any other software off the internet, I bought an external drive and had time machine back up everything. I installed the SSD, started up the computer and had time machine do its thing and booted everything up onto the ssd. Everything went perfectly up, until I went to open up any Microsoft Office application because they required I put in the product key. The last time I put in the product key was when I first bought the macbook pro about 4 years ago(I installed everything using the disc). What I tried to do was boot the computer using the old hard drive and we have the same story.... I need a product key that I don't have. I even tried installing a product key finder and it found no Microsoft Office product key.
Tomorrow my plan is to use time machine to bring me back to the couple minutes before I setup the new SSD. Before I do that, I want to know what your opinions are on this matter or more importantly, what should I do?
    Thanks in advance.

Read the instructions that came with your PIN - they tell you how to get the Product Key from the MS Shop (I think it comes from there, anyhow!)
