My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago. What else can I try before just trying to initialize and

Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

  • Can you unplug the external hard drive you are using for time machine

can you unplug the external hard drive you are using for time machine and then plug it back in and it work normals because i have a mac book and don't want to always be carrieing the external hard drive every where i go so can you ?

Yes, that will work fine. It will back up normally once you plug it in again. I do this with my MacBook.

  • Can I disconnect the External Hard Drive?

Can I remove the external hard drive after using Time Machine to back up my information? I am going to use Boot Camp but I want to be sure my memory has been properly backed up. Also, if it works I was going to clear the external hard drive and use it with the Windows so I have memory for games and videos. Can I do this or is the external Hard drive now Mac only?

Yes. Just make sure you eject the drive first (drag its icon to the Trash.)

I think you mean files, right? Memory and hard drive space are not the same thing.

By "clear", you mean erase it and reformat it for Windows? Sure you can do that. Again, try not to confuse hard drive space with memory.

You want system, data, backup etc. Make good use of the four internal drive bays.
You will have to use Disk Utility to ERASE or click on drive and use PARTITION to make it Mac writeable.

  • I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

  • Can't use the other Hard Drive

A few days before that incident I had two hd showing up in System preferences (Startup Disk) but now I have only one hd. I used Disk Utility to erase my 2nd hard drive as MS-DOS (FAT) to run Windows 7 and since then, Only one HD is available but on my desktop I still had my second hard drive icon. I tried to re-erase it as Mac OS extended (Journaled) but still doesn't show up in the (Startup Disk) window. By accident in the (Disk Utilty) window, I think I merged the memory of my 2nd hard drive into the first hard drive and now when I try to split it into two partitions, an error message pops up saying '' The target disk is too small for this operation'' . Can someone help me please One HD showing up As you can see I've got 2 memory slots installedBut one HD is available Just under the second ASCBC, I had my other HD but since I merged it, it disappeared, How can I get my other memory slot working ? PLEASE

The top image indicating memory slots has NOTHING to do with your hard drive. That image illustrates the installed RAM. It appears that you have a single hard drive (STORAGE) with a capacity of 250GB on one partition that is full. You only have 16mb of storage left on that hard drive which is dangerously low.

  • Can I use the same hard drive to back up my photos and also do Time Machine backups?

I bought a 1T external hard drive today for my MacBookPro with the intentions of backing up my iPhoto library, and then deleting it to make more space on my hard drive.
I also tried and failed to install Time Capsule because my Verizon modem won't let Time Capsule run with it unless I use Time Capsule as my wireless.
That said, I want to back up my computer, and even though I copied my iPhoto library already, I have plenty of space to do a Time Machine backup as well.
Is this something I can do? Please let me know. After two hours on the phone with Apple only to learn Time Capsule was a waste of money, I'm hoping I don't need to buy another external HD yet…

If you want to use the drive for both TimeMachine and storage, attach the drive and then open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.  Choose the new hard drive from the left sidebar, and then in the main panel choose Partition.
Choose the number of partitions to be two.  Click the first partition and change the size if you do not want the default half of the drive.  Name the partition (such as Backups), then accept the default format Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and the partition table as GUID.  Click Apply and confirm you want to erase the drive.
Then do the same for the second partition, but of course, give it a different name.
    When finished Quit Disk Utility.
Turn ON TimeMachine in System Preferences and direct it to your backup partition.

  • I can't install the external hard drive

I got an ASUS hard drive for Christmas, but when I try to install it so I can burn things, it says "you can't open the application "setup.exe" because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS X." Or it'll say "There is no application set to open the document."
    Please help

  • G4 How Can I Change the StartUp Hard drive?

I want change the OS StartUp from the factory 10GB hard drive to the 80GB hard drive (WD800BB) I added. I am using 10.4.11 Tiger and need to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. However, 10.5 requires 9GB free space, the 10GB factory drive is really 9.5GB. This cuts it really close. I still have the original install disks for 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and willing to "clean" the 10GB hard drive as it only holds the OS. Any suggestions?

Go to System Preferences > Syatem > Startup Disk to make the change.
Suggestion - Get rid of the 10G HD. HDs are very cheap today. Get a larger HD, like 100-120GB.
Based on your profile listing that you have a G4 sawtooth, nbut 1.8GHz processor. I assume you have upgraded the processor speed.
The sawtooth can only use HDs up 128GB. Look at these links.

  • Can I disconnect the external hard drive even if Time Machine is set to back up every so often?

I noticed that Time Machine backs up the system ever so often.  What happens if I disconnect the external hard drive I'm using as the back up and Time Machine tries to initiate a back up?  Will it corrupt anything?

As long as you properly eject the drive before unplugging it, TM will detect that is no longer mounted and will not do anything until you plug it back and OS X mounts the drive again.
TM was designed with the knowledge in mind that many people would be using it with laptops, and thus inherently unplugging and plugginh in their TM backup devices many times.

  • Im swithching from 2007 macbook pro 17" to 2011 macbook pro 17" . Can i clone the old hard drive and use OSX 10.5.8?

Can I install OSX 10.5.8 on a new macbook pro which comes with Lion? I would like to clone my old hard drive onto the new mac without lion causing compatibility issues????

What if replace the new 2011 MBP drive with a brand new SSD with snow leopard pre installed?
Snow Leopard may be possible, depending on whether it was shipped from the factory with SL and had Lion installed in the supply chain, or if it shipped with Lion in the first place. However the SL version would have to be the one which was originally installed or later, which likely means 10.6.7 or.8. The retail 10.6.3 installer won't work, nor will an installation cloned from a different Mac unless it was from the exact same model.
Plenty of threads around concerning installing SL in place of Lion - do a search. Some have been successful.
Replacing the HD wouldn't be necessary, and won't make the OS version run the rest of the hardware.

  • How can I make the external hard drive my default to save everything on it?

    Hi everyone,
I have a new Macbook with retina but I had to buy the one with lower Flash Disk space and faster processor,
but when I realized that I could buy external hard drives I bought one, so I was wondering if I could change the default Flash Drive to the external one so apps and all my files, music and content save in this one instead of the one inside the mac
    thank you for your time

    what does SSD mean???
SSD is the internal flash memory.
Use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to "clone" (exact copy) the SSD to the external.
Then go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select the external HD as the startup disk.

  • I created a new home folder on an external but didn't move my old files over. Now I can't see the old hard drive in my mac mini. How can I locate that drive?

I wanted to move my home folder to an external drive. I created a new home folder and in advanced options I moved it over. I didn't however move my files over first, my bad. Now I can't see the hard drive on my mac mini. Is it possible to reverse it or get access to the old home folder and is it possible to still use the mac mini's internal hard drive for storage? How do I find my shared folder, it was on the internal drive. I'm new to macs as you might have guessed at this debockle. Can anyone help?

I'm using Mavricks. I wanted to move my home directory to an external and went into sys prop/users/advanced options and moved the folder ok. Being a noobie on Macs I didn't copy my data and such. So my settings were all new. Basicly now I don't see the internal drive on my mini. There is a lot of strage I'm not able to access. The internal drive doesn't show up. How can I put a folder back onto it so it shows up?

  • Can I replace the internal hard drive if my old one died?

I guess the questions should be should I replace it? My iMac's (early 2006 model) internal hard drive is totally dead, but I think if I install a new internal hard drive it will work again. If I get it up and running, I will use it in my classroom. Would this work? Can I put Tiger on an external hard drive and run the machine from there? (I am thinking the answer is no to the last question but thought I would ask. LOL!) I have already upgraded the RAM to 1 gigabyte (easy to do).

    jolly....
I had mine open last week and removed the faulty hd (160GB) and put it in a USB drive adapter. I was able to see it on a linux machine so I put it back in my iMac and it worked just fine for about a week. I was able to make a bootable copy on a 160GB usb drive and save all my data. Good thing too since it just died again (clicking a whirring sounds).
Any way... to answer your question. I recall that once you get to see the drive there is a clip and catch type connection where the drive and a metal plate come out as a single unit. It has 2 pins that fit into holes toward the bottom of the case and the catch is on the top. Once you pop the catch you can take the drive out with the plate. The pins screw out of the mounting holes on the drive and so does the metal plate.
Hope this helps. I'll take some pictures of mine when I take it apart again since I have to get a new drive soon myself.
