HT1338 can I update OS X 10.5.8 to Mountain Lion?

C Is it possible to update my 24" imac opperating system to the latest operating system? I'm running OS x 10.5.8. Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
           terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
         7. Xserve (Early 2009)
     Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • HT1338 Can I update directly from OSX 10.5.8 to Lion?

I'd like to use iCloud to exchange information (including pictures) between my IMac and a newly purchased iPad but believe I need to upgrade my OSX software to at least 10.7.2
Is this a good idea and how do I best do it?

    Hello,
Can't be a judge if it'd be good for you, but for me Lion/10.7 was 242 steps backwards from 10.5.8 as far as ease of use.
If you want to switch, (most iDevice users do), then you must get 10.6 first...
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It's been pulled from the online store & Apple Stores, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard.
Call Apple Sales...in the US: 1-800-MY-APPLE. Or Support... 1-800-275-2273

Call Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. For Lion you'll get a redemptions code via e-mail and need to DL from the Mac Apple Store (requires SL 10.6.6+).

I tried mackeeper to recover files but it could not. Any other way any one has tried to recover a system library folder after OS upgrade?

No, it doesn't store a clone. You would have needed to make one with either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
If the files were in your ~/Library folder then they may still be there. As I said, you can access it by
going to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". I wouldn't think an upgrade would overwrite anything in ~/Library.
If you have a Time Machine backup you may also be able to use that to retrieve them.

Is your MacBook compatible with Mavericks? Open  > About this Mac > More Info, and you will see the MacBook model you have got. Then, check in this site if it's supported > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
If your Mac is not compatible, OS X 10.7.5 is the most recent version for your Mac. Also, copy the whole message you see when you open the Mavericks installer

  • Updating Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion 10.8

Hello to everyone on this forum,
I'm new on this forum as from today on.
My Mac is from 15th May 2011 : iMac 12,2 Intel Core i5 2,7 GHz mit 8 GB RAM memory and 27" screen.
There is an OS Snow Leopard v. 10.6.8 on it.
When there was an upgrade to te Lion available,  I saw a lot of negative comments about programs that did'nt work anymore with Lion , so I waited to upgrade my OS at that time. The upgrade was also about 30 Euro.
Now that there is the Mountain Lion available and the upgrade price is 16 Euro, I may have do the upgrade.
    Question
Is it possible to do the upgrade from my Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion 10.8 without having upgraded before to Lion (the upgrade in between) without any problems - programs which don't work anymore  (anyone on this forum in the same situation as me and already having bad experiences with it) ?
Otherwise  I stay with my Snow Lepard as long as I can, because now all programs are working good.
Anyone an idea of how you are being told (by Apple ?) you can't wait anymore ( in the future) to an upgrade of your OS ?
Thanks for your comments and experiences and recommendations about the upgrade.

Yes. You can upgrade directly from Snow Leopard v10.6 to Mountain Lion.
As for app compatibility, click here >  App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS

The issue is that Apple is not responsible for updating third party software. That is the responsibility of the app developer regardless of which Mac OS X you have installed.

  • Just installing a few updates from the Mac App Store for mountain lion on my 2010 MacBook Pro, during this it made a noise and then the screen and keyboard went off, like it is off. What happened, is it off...or should I just wait it out?

    What kind of noise?
The only things I can think of that make noise are fans and disks. Fans usually will not cause the computer to shutdown as you describe. My guess is your disk drive died. I hope you made a backup prior to start the ungrade.

Hi, i am having the same problem. this is what i have noticed.
    I have 2 x imac's and 2 x macbook air's
i upgraded the 2 macbook air's and 1 of the imac's to Mountain Lion, all these have problems acessing sites that require you to login .
the one remaining imac is still running lion and works perfect.
i am using a dlink router with DD-WRT firmware, i tested teathering from my iphone and i can log into websites fine using the newly upgraded mac's.
It's not a wireless issue as my imac is using an ethernet connection.
is there a compatibility issue with some routers.

I need to check a few other things...
Click on 'Mail' in the upper left corner next to the Apple ()
    Click Preferences
    Click the 'Accounts' tab
Make sure your iCloud account is highlighted in the column on the left.
In the account information section what does it say next to:
    Incoming Mail Server?
    Outgoing Mail Server?
Also, did you use MobileMe before the iCloud?
