Thanks for the link, I wasn't aware you could burn the install file to a boot disc. I had assumed you'd have to install snow leopard, upgrade to 10.6.8, then re-download the massive install file for every machine you wanted to install lion on. You know, it's kind of ridiculous how little information there is about this considering some reports predict that lion could be released as early as tomorrow.
It would be nice to know if snow leopard is in fact mandatory so I could get my leopard to snow leopard upgrade out of way in advance. If the upgrade isn't necessary I'd obviously just wait until Lion ships and save myself the trouble. In my original post I had assumed that if something went wrong during the lion installation that you'd only be able to recover from a snow leopard time machine backup and not a leopard one; if you can only install from SL --> Lion it would make sense that you could only recover your data from an SL backup, that's why I included an extra "full backup" in my upgrade path.
It's kind of absurd that there's no clear answer to such a straightforward question as "What do I need to install Lion?". Something as simple as "Lion can only be installed from the App store." on the "How to Buy" info page for Lion would let those of us still running Leopard (and those of us who have to coordinate multiple installations) know how to prepare for Lion's release.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with Apple Mac OS X 10.5, Leopard on it and I'm starting to get annoyed with the fact that some stuff is not compatible with this OSX anymore. I would like to be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion or Lion but without having to fork out £15 on Snow Leopard when it won't get used, or should I upgrade to Snow Leopard and not bother about upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion.

You have to get Snow Leopard first.
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:

I know you have to have snow leopard to download lion via app store. But isn't there a possibilty to buy a bundle or any other way of upgrading without paying double price? So far I can't find any information on the Apple website except you have to have Snow Leopard. I know this implies you gotta get snow leopard. Just wondering if I have to pay the full price.

There is a way but it's unlawful (Violates Apple EUA) - I did post a link in here but Apple deleted it ( To be fair the link did expound some convoluted set of circumstances under which it would be legal, but in reality it was a hack so fair play)
I have read that some "helpful" Apple Store will let you borrow a SL copy but I doubt if that's widespread.
The way to look at it is that Lion is priced as an upgrade from SL - not as a base product, which is why the $29 (or equiv) is actually pretty fair.

Upgrading to Mountain Lion from 2011 Snow Leopard

I have a Macbook Pro that I bought in 2011. I have been running under Snow Leopard without issues but have been looking into upgrading due to the fact that a game I am wanting to purchase minimally requires Lion. I have been told, by a tech person, that upgrading to Yosemite would be a lot on my computer and would likely cause issues like others have been having (I have been watching the reviews through the App Store). So I have been looking into Lion and Mountain Lion because I was told that since they were closer to my model it wouldn't be as hard on my computer as Yosemite or Mavericks would be.
Basically want to know / get a second opinion if anyone has gone from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion/Lion and if that worked well for them?
I don't know a lot about computers and just really don't want to mess up or crash my computer all because of a game!

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

It seems your MacBook is too old to run Mountain Lion. But given the age of your Computer, Snow Leopard is still a very stable and excellent OSX. You can go to Lion (10.7) if you wish, but if I were you, I would be staying with Snow Leopard.

Hi,
I want to reinstall my OSX, so I was wandering if it was a better idea to buy Mountain Lion instead of installing Snow Leopard again.
I have a 2010 MacBook Pro (dual core 2.66 GHz i7, 4GB RAM, etc.) but I am worried that Mountain Lion will be significantly slower than Snow Leopard. This is my first Mac so I am judging this by my experiences with Windows, where XP was much faster than Windows 7.
I currently don't need any of the new features that were added to Lion or Mountain Lion and I am fine with Snow Leopard (I know some guys that are still using Tiger). Still, I would not like to fall far behind since the newest OSX is already two versions infront of mine, but what is mostly concerning me is the speed of my Mac. Has anyone tried it on a MacBook Pro like this one? What do you think will be the best option? (I don't care about the money since Mountain Lion is only $20)

I can't upgrade from 10.5.8 to snow leopard?

i've got one of the old black macbooks. i've had it for about 3 years and last week used the cd's that came with it to format the computer back to factory settings which obviously put it back to quite an old os x version. i've tryed to get the new itunes and quicktime but both are saying i need at least 10.6.8? do i have to buy something for this? i've always been up to date with itunes and everything before i formatted but now don't seem to have the right operating system to be able to use them. until i get the new itunes i can't even plug my iphone into my computer!!!

Can i upgrade a power PC G5 to snow leopard

I saw an earlier post that this was not possible because snow leopard only runs on intel based macs. However, my mother-in law has an old
Dual 2 GHz Power PC G5 and she wants to use the newest iTunes to sync her music on her iPhone. It seems that the newest iTunes will only be supported on an OS like snow leopard or later. Is there any way she can upgrade her machine to an OS that will accept the new iTunes to sync her music? (sorry not really sure the best place to post this question)

Snow Leopard requires an Intel-based Mac, but she can upgrade her PowerMac G5 to Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard which will, at least for now, support the most recent version of iTunes. Apple no longer sells 10.5, so she or you will have to look to private sellers for a copy. She'll need a retail (black label) version, not the system disk from another model of Mac (grey label).
