Daughter's MacBook Pro started and asked for 6 digits on a grey screen?

6 digits sounds like the code sent from Find My Mac when locking the machine. It can only be reset by an Apple Store.

My MacBook Pro starts and shuts off after loading for sometime

Try starting in Safe mode by holding down the Shift key while booting. Safe mode takes a while to load the OS. After that, restart the computer normally.
If that does not work, start up in Recovery by holding down the Command and R keys. In the window that opens, choose Disk Utility at the bottom and verify and repair your disk. Repair permissions while you are there.

If you still have the old computer and it is a MAC, the Lightroom 5 serial numbers are in a text file.

Also if you can guide from where I can download OS X Lion for reinstalling it to the imac, please.

  • My MacBook Pro is now asking for a login. When I enter my passcode, it goes to a blue screen and back to the login screen. I saw several older posts, but nothing recently. I am running Snow Leopard.

My MacBook is now asking for a password. When I login, it loops to a blue screen, and back to the login. Incorrect logins create a shaking of the login screen. I tried restarting with the shift key depressed, with no luck.

I performed a hard shutdown, and upon start I could access my system without logging on. I'm not sure what caused the issue, but I have not booted up in almost a week.

  • I just downloaded the recent Maverick Software Update onto my Macbook Pro 15" and when the download/reset finished, my screen was completely black and I have not been able to get it back since. Help?

My computer had been wanting to do a software update, with what I believe was the Mavericks Software, for a few weeks but I had been putting it off. When I finally decided to install the update onto my Macbook Pro 15" today, my screen went completely black and I haven't been able to get it back since. The computer still turns on, I can tell because my caps lock key still glows when I press it and my volume buttons still make sounds when I press them. However, I cannot see anything on the screen. I don't even get the grey start up screen when I reset my computer. I have tried the SafeMode Restart where you hold Shift while it is restarting and the Display Reset in which you hold Command + Option (alt) + R + P until you hear the start up noise twice, and neither have worked. Any other advice on what I can do to get my screen back without having to send my computer away to be fixed?

  • I have Yahoo Mail synced on my new macbook pro. Keeps asking for password

I have Yahoo Mail synced on my new macbook pro. It it consistently asking to re-enter the password. Does anyone else have this problem? I have deleted it and reinstalled it several times. It did not do this on my previous macbook.

Does anyone else have this problem?
There are several similar reports on this site every day.
I've never used Yahoo mail and my knowledge of it is second-hand. This is what I've been able to gather.
If you have a free Yahoo account, POP access to incoming mail from a mail client such as Apple Mail is not supported. A free account is accessible only through IMAP (and then perhaps only on mobile devices — the documentation is unclear) or the web interface.
As for a paid Yahoo account, or an account through an ISP such as AT&T, you must enable POP access through the web interface. I've seen reports that you must periodically (every two weeks?) log in to the "Manage Account" page on the website to confirm your identity.
I've also seen reports that eliminating all UPPER CASE letters from the password, and shortening it to no more than 7 characters, may help. That's barely, if at all, adequate for security, and you must be sure to choose the password randomly. It should not be easy to type or remember.
That said, so many problems with Yahoo mail are reported that I can't recommend using Mail as a client for it. You might get better results with another mail client, such as Thunderbird. If not, just use the webmail interface. That's how it was designed to work. Better yet, don't use Yahoo at all.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 - Freeze/Ask for Restart

I just purchased the new Macbook Pro 15 inch from the apple store. Seriously a beast compared to my Late 2006 Macbook. Surprised at how much of a difference it truly makes. I sold my old Macbook to help pay for the MBP and haven't looked back. Now i'll stop gushing.
The one and only issue i have with the Macbook Pro is that twice it has frozen, and greyed out the desktop and popped a message up asking me to RESTART the MBP in about 3-4 different languages. I was wondering why I might be having this issue? I mean this is about a week old and this message is cropping up. Just wondering if anyone has encountered this and their solution.
My only solution which i haven't tried yet would be a boot from CD and disk utility repair of the HD, but is that necessary?

    Ho Lee,
Thank you for your quick response, I came across that as well when I was searching for answers as well. I'm not new to troubleshooting macs but just was wondering if anyone else was encountering the issue as well.
But that was a good reminder to dig deeper into which programs are active when the Kernal panic occurs and make sure they are updated to the newest realease.

  • Macbook pro model A1278 wont boot osx stuck at grey screen

I have had my mbp for about 3 years now and has worked great.  Just today i got home from work and when i opened the macbook which was already running I was in OSX but it was frozen with colored wheel spinning.  I had never experiened this before but I didnt think too much of it and held down the power button to reset it.  Now i am stuck at the grey screen with the Apple Logo and spinning wheel and cant get back into OSX at all.  So i started googling (on another computer obviously) and tried:
    1.  boot in safe mode.  Didnt work, still stuck at grey screen
    2.  boot in safe mode with "commd-shift-v" to see info.  stuck in "dos" looking screen. see pic at bottom.
    3.  tried resetting VRAM w/ "commd-opt-p-r".  did not work, still stuck at grey screen.
    4.  got original OSX install DVD.  Was able to boot to disc and make it to disk utilities.  went to repair and got error "unable to unmount disk"
    5.  ran "repair permissions" and completed that.  ran "verify disk" and got green "disk ok" message.  then re-ran repair and got same "unable to unmount disk"
so know i am worried.  my main concern is the 80 GB of music I have on this computer (and dont currently have backed-up {que back-up lectures}) and my pictures.  Does it sound possible to recover music and pics based on this little bit of info?  Im willing to take it to the Apple store and pay the price if it sounds like I can recover it.  I am pretty computer savy but am reluctanct to just start trying anything that could lose my music/pics.  I cant try just deleteing and restoring OSX to factory settings and losing all that music/pics.
so...what is best approach to access and back up these files myself?  I do have another macbook with a firewire connection but am not familiar with that process.  I will get a external HD immediatly (now ofcourse)...can I backup my files from disc utility?
    Thanks for any help.

  • HT1338 My new MacBook Pro is constantly searching for updates.

This problem is in the updates tab of the app store. I need to update To the newest version of software, but I cannot update the new software or shut down the computer until it finishes searching for updates. This has gone on for at least an hour or two. Can I do a hard shut down?

Do command-option-esc to force quit the App Store program. Then from the Apple in the menu select Software Update.

  • Difference between Macbook Pro "13 and "15

I was just wondering what other differnces are found in the Macbook Pro "13 and "15 Non retina other than the Screen size. Thanks

    Graphics capability.
Besides the size, the 15" model has two GPUs, the one built into the regular Intel CPU and an extra one with way more oomph. Plus it has separate and dedicated VRAM just for the graphics, so the GPU and CPU don't do a battle royale for access to a shared memory. This really improves performance. You can also custom-order the widescreen display (essentially, half-a-Retina without the cost) and even the anti-glare option, essential for use outdoors. Plus many more configurable customization options.
13" models just have the piddly integrated GPU and shared memory. Very graphics demanding apps fall flat on their face in this platform.
Also, the 13" models have a single fan, vs. the two on the 15". So when used intensively, will run hotter by default. And the battery will last less since it is smaller: battery capacity is directly proportional to the volume.
But some people still prefer the smaller size and somewhat lighter weight.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro start up? White screen and flashing question mark.

    Hi,
I've had my MacBook Pro for almost 2 years now and I installed OS X 10.8 about 4 months ago.
Today I turned the MacBook Pro on and a white screen with a flashing question mark appeared. I tried then getting the startup manager up: turning on the laptop and immediately holding in alt (option). But nothing appeared for about 25 seconds until a rotating Earth labelled 'Internet recovery' appeared that gave me options to join wireless connections. However, my internet wasn't in the options and when I tried typing in the information required to join my internet the laptop would just load and never find it.
I then tried putting in my Mac OS X install DVD (10.6.7) and help in C until the apple logo appeared on the screen and the little rotating loading circle appeared. That then disappeared and a cicle with a cross through it appeared (similar to a no entry sign). Then after about 30 seconds a blue screen followed by a grey screen appeared until eventually the disc ran properly. I then went into Disk Utility but there was no option called Macintosh HD, only the discs content. It wouldn't let me first aid, erase or repair anything.
I'm totally stumped and have 4 exams at university within the next 2 weeks. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me out here?
    Thanks,
    Best wishes,
    Connor

The support article linked below is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to starting up from an installation disc, you should instead start up in Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
If you don't have a current backup of all the data on the startup volume, and you want to preserve that data, then you must try to back up before you do anything else. Ask for instructions if you need them.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to reinstall OS X from Recovery, if necessary. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
