A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

If you have a way to wipe 10.6.8 off, you can then reboot your machine (with no OS) and since your system came preinstalled with Lion, Internet Recovery should occur which will boot to Apple's servers into a Recovery HD for you to redownload and install Lion.
To be safe I would first make a clone of the current installation using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!. This way you have a way to recover.

Thanks Neil. No, of course there was no backup to restore from, but the Command + R worked like a charm (after a mirror backup, just in case) .
I had totally forgotten the Command R trick. I've only had Macs since 1984, so I'm sort of newbie here ;-) Just a brain **** from an old man.

If your Mac can run MacOS X 10.6.8, it probably can be upgraded to Yosemite, if you don't have to stick to Snowleopard for other reasons.
Is it possible to still get the older version?
Amazon or eBay are still selling iLife '11 installer disks, and you could reinstall GarageBand from these DVDs. But it will be expensive.
Have you checked your backups, if you can restore GarageBand from a backup?

How can I get past a Snow Leopard install disc hang-up?

Trying to upgrade 2009 Mac Mini to Snow Leopard from 5.6.8. Install disc won't allow install to Mac HD because it insists Time Machine is using Mac HD for backups, but it isn't. Time Machine is using a partitioned 1T external drive. How can I get the install disc to acknowledge and upgrade on the internal HD?

Allan, There was exactly that file on the internal HD - and on each of the three partitions of the external drive. I dragged all such files to the Trash, which seem to eliminate much of the file(s), but the Trash won't empty completely because of a message that "BootX" is locked, as is "boot.efi" - though I'm instructed to hold Option and Empty Trash (which won't hightlight; actually a "continue" button is the only choice in a dialog box). So now I'm not sure any of these "locks" are clearing; I want to re-start the computer before trying to install Snow Leopard again, and I can't have this hung up in the Trash in any case. Anything more you could suggest?

Ive got an X100e netbook and really love the thing! My hard drive crashed the other day and needs replaced. I am a certified IT professional so this is no problem. My question is am I able to get a copy of the files originally installed from Lenovo? I know Dell will do this once you verify the machine. Is this an option here or am I stuck buying a new OEM copy of Windows 7?

If you got warranty you can get a copy free if the hdd has crashed, if you don't have warranty you have to pay for the recovery media.
Otherwise just use the retail version Win 7 ISO and activate it using the serial number provided on your machine.
