HT1338 How do I go about upgrading my Mac OS X from 10.4.11 to 10.5?

My OS is massively out of date, but I can't seem to find how or where to purchase an update. Help!

Many thanks for your help and for getting back to me so quickly. As you've probably guessed, I'm far from computer literate. I have the below, would that support it? Thanks in advance.

You phone the Apple Store and order a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, and if desired, update it to 10.6.8 and get Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store.

I have seen a lot of discussions upgrading from Boot Camp 4 to 5 but no answers upgrading from boot camp 3.3 to 5. My worry is that if I upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion, that my bootcamp partition will no longer be able to boot up. There seem to be a lot of threads suggesting problems that are possible. Has anyone gone through this upgrade with success?

Before doing any installation restart OSX from your 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD and use Disk Utility to Both Repair The Disk and Repair the Permissions of your Macintosh HD.
Next remove your Snow Leopard DVD and restart your iMac into OSX.
Update to the latest version of OS X Snow Leopard by clicking the Apple icon and choose Software Update to install Snow Leopard v10.6.8, the latest version.
Use Time Machine to make a Full Backup of your Macintosh HD.
Shut down and restart into Windows by holding the Option key at the chime and selecting Windows.
Now use Windows Backup to make a Full Image Backup of your Windows Installation to a removable drive.
Shut Down and Boot back into OSX.
Open the Mac App Store from your Dock to buy and download Mountain Lion. Then follow the onscreen instructions to install it.
Upgrading your OSX to 10.8 should not effect the Windows Partition at all since you are only upgrading the Mac side. You should not have to run the Boot Camp Assitant 5 Utility in OSX at all.
Your Boot Camp 3.3 Windows Support Drivers et. al only effect your Windows installation and should continue to run fine after upgrading.
Which version of Windows do you already have installed on the existing Boot Camp Partition?
Is it 32 bit or 64 bit?

If the backup and restore takes place properly, you shouldn't have any issue as millions of people have done an update from iOS 4.

  • Since upgrading my Mac OS X from 10.6.8 to 10.8 and 10.9, I cannot open newly downloaded pdf files.  Please help!  Thanks.

    Hi,
Since upgrading my Mac OS X from 10.6.8 to firstly, 10.8 and then, 10.9, I have not been able to open new pdf files on either Preview or Acrobat Reader.
I can still open previously downloaded pdf files but not new ones.
I can still open new pdf files online.  However, when I save a pdf to my computer, I cannot open them anymore.
I upgraded to 10.8 a couple of weeks ago and then accepted a free upgrade to Maverick (10.9) this morning.  I was hoping that by upgrading to Maverick, I would be able to open pdf files again but alas, that is not the case.
I really need to open pdf files as a matter of urgency as I do this on a daily basis.  I am not a computer whizz so if anyone can help find a simple yet effective solution to my problem, that would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

When I try to open a downloaded pdf file, I receive this message:
"It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."
Yet, when I try to open pdf files downloaded whilst still using Mac OS X 10.6.8, they open as normal.  So what is the problem, please?
I have deleted Adobe Reader and re-installed it.  Yet, it follows the same pattern as above.  The same is true of Preview.  It's really frustrating because it means I can only open new pdf files using Safari (so I have to be online to do this).  I need to be able to open pdf files when I'm offline as well.
    Thanks.

  • HT1338 how to use a webcam in a mac pro?

How to use a webcam on a mac pro?

    Generally, plug it in.
The OS should notice most major webcams, although you might need to install some software from the vendor to make it work. You'll need to check specific make/models for compatibility.
Once it's connected it should be available in any application that supports video input.

You have to buy it from Microsoft
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products
or from a retailer that sell it.  Looks like even the Apple Store sells it...

If you don't speciflcally need Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, you can consider iWork from Apple, which is available from the Mac App Store
    Pages - Numbers -  Keynote
You can also consider "clones" of MS Office

  • Upgrade to Mac OS X from Mac OS 9.2.2

    Hi Mac World Rayric again,
Still have no joy loading my Mac OS X Disk which was given to me by a friend.
    My new Question:
Some years ago I parched from then the company (XLR8) an upgrade MACh Speed G4z w/MVP™ CPU ZIF 500 MHz Doughtercard for my Mac Blue and White G3 OS9 to upgrade it to a G4 with the same OS9. (Now upgraded to OS 9.2.2).
Now I would like to upgrade to Mac OSX and need some help.
I am still running my Blue and White Mac OS 9.2.2 G4 500 MHz with 100 GB hard drive and one GB memory with a CD not a DVD Drive.
Is it possible to run Mac OS X on my system? And what Mac OS do you suggest Panther / Tiger.
Please see below a copy from my Apple Systems Profiler
    Hardware overview
    Machine ID: 406
    Model name: PowerMac G3 Series
Keyboard type: Apple Pro Keyboard - ISO
    Processor info: PowerPC G4
    Machine speed: 500 MHz
    Nanokernel version: 2.27
    Nanokernel pool extends: 12
    Nanokernel scheduled CPUs:1
    Does this help?

    Rayric,
According to the DayStar website, to install OSX (10.2, 10.3 or 10.4) with your card installed, you need XPostFacto software. From what I can remember, this is a free download. You may have to search out a set of detailed instructions for installing OSX using this software. Google is your friend.
Personally, with a GB of RAM, you could run 10.3 or 10.4. The 500MHz G4 might start to "not be so zippy" with 10.4 tho', remember the Quad 2.7GHz G5's and Intel DuoCores probably have 15-20x the CPU grunt of your upgrade.
    I found 10.3 faster than OS9.2.2 on my 500MHz PBG4.
Fingers crossed that you have top quality memory, OSX throws a wobbly if the memory installed is not up to speed. Then be prepared to spend a few years (and a lot of money) upgrading all your apps and learning how to use them effectively.
What about your video card ? There's a lot of graphics gimmicks in 10.4 that might just be too much for an 8Mb or 16Mb card.

    Rayric

    Hi rayric,
your computer is compatible with 10.4 "Tiger". However, you should check about the compatibility of your processor upgrade card: User Reports Database on Macintosh CPU Upgrades.
Before you upgrade you will have to get the Tiger install CDs through the Media Exchange Program.
Then make sure you upgrade your firmware: Mac OS X: Chart of Available Firmware Updates
Be aware that your computer is quite slow and the experience will be limited. Some features of MacOS X (both 10.3 and 10.4) will not be available (e.g. Quartz Extreme).

    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory[14]
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading[14]
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • HT1338 How do I skip an upgrade?

I actively use Pages 09 to publish a monthly newsletter.  I use the link text feature in Pages 09, but noted that feature was removed in the latest edition of Pages.  Apple does not warn us when it removes features during the update process.  It seems to me that I use to be able to review changes associated with upgrades.  However, now, the change document seems to be more like self-promotion. I want to avoid Apple updates until I know what is being changed.
Now I note that the update alert only permits install updates now or later, with no optout option.  How do I opt out?

    Pete, good morning.
I don't download now.  But then the alert persists and returns.  I would like to skip a version until I can read comments from the Apple community on what the update actually did.  I did not see a place in Software Update that provided any preference control.
Okay, just checked the System Preferences and see where I can uncheck the Automatically check for updates.  I like knowing about upgardes, but want the option to skip a new version until I have had a chance to view the communities reaction to it.
Your suggestion works, only if I turn off the auto check for updates.  That certainly is an option.
    Thanks again.
