HT1338 How do I transfer my iTunes library from my old laptop to my new one?

So, the other day, I went and bought a new laptop as my old one was getting worn out and slow, but my entire iTunes library is on my old laptop and I don't know how to transfer it over to my new laptop. Can anyone help?

Hi - how do i transfer my music library from an old laptop to a new laptop??  BTW - i dont have the OLD laptop anymore - am i screwed??

You cannot transfer anything from a device which you do not have, because you do not have it.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything on the new computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168

  • How can I Transfer my iTunes Library from my old computer to my new?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro (my first Mac) and I am trying to figure out how I can get my library from my iTunes off of my old computer onto my new one?  I thought that it was saved by accounts, so when I signed into my iTunes on my new MacBook, all of the songs would be there or automatically transfer into it.  This did not happen.  Is there a way to do this?  I want all my music and movies back!
    Thank you.

  • I want to transfer my itunes music from my old laptop to my new one but I want to also preserve the library data such as play count, date added etc.

The thing is, my itunes media folder where the .itl and .xml files are located are different from where my actual music folder is located (on my desktop), but my itunes library is still managed by itunes so I'm not sure how to go about it because I can't just simply copy the whole itunes folder because I have two seperate ones

There are multiple threads and documents on how to accomplish this.  Was a search of the forums or your favorite search engine done before posting this common issue?
The library files and media files being in different locations is a minor issue.. same basic concept still applies.  Move the ENTIRE iTunes folder (and any media folders) to the new computer from the old computer.

  • How do I get my iTunes library from my old mac to my new one?

How do I get my iTunes and for that matter iPhoto libraries from my old mac 15" Tetherball iMac running OS 10.4.11 iTunes ver. 9.0.2 to my new iMac running 10.6.2 but also using iTunes ver. 9.0.2? I used the migration assistant, and a firewire cable, to move my "Music" folder to the new mac, but it insisted that I create a new user on the new mac for the data, rather than giving me a choice to move it into my user account. Also, based on some info from The Missing Manual and the Take Control books I created a separate user that is not an Administrator on the computer to be my primary login. When I simply tried to copy the music folder - iTunes failed to open. And because I am not an admin I can't access the new folder to copy it while I am in my non-admin user on the new computer. I have looked through as many of the posts as I could wade through and didn't see anything quite as simple as I think my problem is. Thanks, in advance.

Did you use Migration Assistant to move all you contents or did you create a new account on the new Mac before transferring?
I had a similar problem when I got my MBP as I created an account on the new Mac at the store to confirm that the MBP was ok. Mistake. I got how home and had loads of issues so I ended up reinstalling the system on the new MBP and using Migration Assistant to move ALL my stuff from the old to the new.
Another choice is to clone your old Mac to an ext HD then swap that cloned HD with the HD in your new Mac.
Regardless of which way you go make sure you de-authorize your old Mac before getting rid of it.

  • How do I move my iTunes library from my old MBP to my new one??

I followed this procedure to the letter and got nothing:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
I really don't want to trash all of my playlists and things and then have to start over from scratch. This was supposed to work.
Getting pretty sick of Apple products.

That was exactly what I did, Chris CA, and I got nothing.
I found a tip somewhere online that suggested editing the iTunes Music Library file, changing the path (my new MB Pro had a slightly different user name) for all the entries that referenced the path. I also noticed that the version of iTunes, noted in the xml file, was 10.1 and I have 10.4 on this new machine.  Once I did that, my old iTunes library, with all the playlists and everything, showed up just fine. I wish that KB article had mentioned this.
Do you know why this would be necessary? I mean, why should I have to touch the xml file for iTunes to recognize the contents of the iTunes Music folder?
Thanks for your reply. I do dislike of some of the changes to the Apple line that have occurred over the years, but the alternatives aren't pretty.
