HT1338 how do I turn off optical digital-out port?

how do I turn off optical digital-out port?

Just want to report that I too, running 10.6.5 on a MacBook Pro, had the mysterious " Audio Out Stuck On Optical Digital-Out Port" problem whereby I was unable to adjust the volume on my built-in speakers and they were permanently "muted" because the operating system was sending the audio signal to a non-existent device that it falsely thought was plugged in to my unused headphone jack hole. I thought at first the problem must necessarily be software-based because the built-in speakers worked fine when playing the start-up chimes. So I uninstalled something called "Soundflower" which does some mysterious shenanigans with commandeering the internal audio signal so that one can make audio recordings of one's computers' sound effects. But uninstalling Soundflower had no effect. So I uninstalled some other audio-related software, also to no avail. Then I zapped the PRAM, to no avail.
Then I decided to try what some people call "the toothpick trick," i.e. poking around in the headphone jack hole to see if something was stuck in there shortcircuiting it, and initiating the false signal to the OS.
Bingo! Success!
Actually, I did a hyper-sophisticated version of the toothpick trick:
First, I own a home "otoscope," one of those doohickeys that doctors use to look into your ear. One can now buy amateur versions of otoscopes for home use, to looks for kids' ear infections, etc. (They only cost $30 or so.) Anyway, using the smallest attachment designed for babies' ears, I was able to look (with illumination) into the headphone jack hole and yessiree there was a big bunch of dust stuck way deep in there.
So then I took not a toothpick but instead a slender dental prong-pick thingie made of stainless steel, and very delicately was able to snag the clot of dust deep in the hole at the bottom on the first try. Quite a wad!
Then I took one of those rubber ear-bulbs, used for cleaning out your ears, and used it as a micro-vacuum-cleaner: Squeeze the rubber bulb til it is as empty as can be, then place the tip of the bulb at the entrance to the headphone jack hole, then suddenly release my grip: it ***** air out of the tiniest spaces! After doing this a few times, I then did the reverse and blew blasts of air into the hole.
After all this, I looked back into the hole with the otoscope, and it was sparkling clean! Not even the tiniest speck of dust in an area that just three minutes earlier was thick with dust.
I then turned my computer back on and...problem solved! The audio worked again like normal, and it was no longer detecting an imaginary "Optical Digital-Out Port" device. The internal speakers once again worked as normal, and the volume could be adjusted.
I guess the problem for me really was dust causing a short-circuit. It might very well be the same for you -- so try cleaning out the headphone jack hole as I did.
I'm writing this detailed description to help anyone else in the future with a similar problem.

  • How do I turn off Optical Digital Output??

My 15" macbook pro's digital optical output has turned on (the red light is on inside the headphone port) and i want to turn it off... but how??

try and rapidly insert and remove the headphones in the audio jack.  The toggle switch is stuck in the position that makes your mac think the headphones are still plugged in.  You need to flip it back.

I experienced this same problem yesterday on my MacBook Pro,  still searching for a solution, several other posts here indicate people have been experiencing this since at lease 2007.  I have  yet to find a clear solution.
It appears that occasionally inserting headphone causes this, it turns on the Optical digital-out port feature (red light glows inside the headphone port) and takes away the internal speakers option.   Restarting did not restore it, but for some reason after sitting asleep overnight the sound started working again and the internal speaker option return in the Sound - Output Window, and the Optical Digital-out option went away.

Stuck in headphone (optical digital-out port) mode. What do I do? Plugging and unplugging headphone jack no help.

Do you see a red light in the headphone jack?? If you do, then the microswitch is stuck and you need to turn it off. Try poking it with a toothpick.
If you don't see a red light, then try resetting the SMC and PRAM and see if these helps. Here are the links.

If you see a red light in the audio output port, then the internal switch is stuck.  Insert the earphone plug a few times and see if you can trip the switch.  If that fails, insert a cocktail stirrer and the like and jiggle it around inside.  If that fails, take it to an Apple store and have the technicians at the genius bar do it for you.
    Ciao.

  • How do I turn off the digital clock?

I've been dealing with the new 3rd generation iPod Nano's lately. One thing I get asked a lot is how to turn off the clock that comes up after the iPod has been running awhile.
To be more specific: When a running 3rd generation iPod Nano has not been touched for 90 seconds the display will change to a digital clock with a picture of the battery level below it. (the 2nd generation Nano's did not do this). It only goes away if the iPod controls are touched again.
Is it possible to turn of this "auto-clock" function so that the song name/artist/album info stays on the display instead? I can't figure out how do it, and the customer's keep asking me about it.

No, it's not currently possible to turn the screen saver clock off. However, if you set the backlight to "Always On", the screen saver will never turn on. However, this will drain the battery more quickly.

  • Turn off Optical Audio out?

somehow my headphone jack is now set to optical audio out. I want to get it back to outputting audio to the internal speakers. how do I switch the jack back to non-optical output?

Your problem is due to a defective switch integral to the audio out jack.
Sometimes it can be remedied by inserting and removing an audio plug a few times. Other people have had success by fishing a toothpick around in the audio jack to free up the stuck switch.

  • How can I turn off or blank out the secondary monitor?

I currently have a three monitor setup.  Two 27" verticals and one 27" iMac between the two.  When I work it is great, however when my wife wants to use the computer, she feels overwhelmed by the displays, is there a way to disable the two external monitors when she logins in; but have them available when others (myself) use the iMac?  Possibly a script or another app...

    Hi,
For other older notebook computers with a backlit keyboard, try one of the following methods depending on your model, to turn the backlit keyboard on or off.
If the spacebar has a keyboard icon on the left side, press and hold the fn key and then tap the space bar one time.
    Press the f12 key.
    Press the f5 key.
    Regards.

  • How do I turn off background ni file activity when not using Labview? files such as nimxs.exe, nipalsm.exe, nipalsm.exe, nisvcloc.exe, nicitdl5.exe

How do I turn off background ni file activity when not using Labview? I use labview rarely, and I also use my computer for demanding multimedia applications, including multitrack digital audio recording. I need to reduce as much background activity as possible, and taking a look with task manager I see files such as nimxs.exe, nipalsm.exe, nipalsm.exe, nisvcloc.exe, and nicitdl5.exe running even when I haven't used Labview (8 I believe). These files run even after I right click the NI icon on the lower right and turn off the application. I would like the computer to boot up without these files, and for the necessary files to be activated only when I start the program.
Can this be done or do I have to remove labview from the system to improve performance?
    Thanks

Hello, those processes are part of running NI services that start when Windows boots.  These processes serve varied purposes and stopping them can have undefined and unknown consiquences for your NI products.  These products run at "normal" priority meaning that they should be preempted by any process running at a higher priority which I would expect your other application to be doing given their time sensitivity.  That being said, in Windows XP (I can't speak for other OSes), you can lower their priorities even greater through task manager (right click the process»set priority) to further remove them from contention for resources.  If you want to prevent them from running you can set the service startup type to "manual" in Control Panel»Administrative Tools»Services.  Right click the process go to Properties and Under the General tab choose Startup Type»Manual.  This will start up the processes only when something directly starts it up.  LabVIEW will start these processes up as it attempts to use them.  When you shut down LabVIEW you will need to manually shut down these processes through task manager.  Again, doing this can cause problems with your NI products on your system and it is not advised.
