HT1338 How to restore a MacBook 10.5.8?

Hi there,
I have been trying to Restore my MacBook 10.5.8 version but it doesn't work.
I went to the store and one of the staff there has recommended that I had back up my files
and all data before performing this.
He said that I should hold the Alt/option key and then Switch the computer on, while holding the "option" key.
Supposedly, I should have had a choice on the screen between "Macintosh HD" and "Restore" but my
computer only gives me the option "Macintosh HD".
Is there any other way to restore my MacBook?

Hello,
Did you ever have an External Disk that you backed up to?
I think the Store must've thought you had OS 10.7.x

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

The method you have been given will leave your data still exposed to recovery software. See this article
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20011109-263.html
But don't use 7 pass erase, which will be overkill and take forever. One pass zero is quite adequate.

To restore your computer to factory settings:
    1. Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
After reinstalling OS X, you will have to reinstall your iLife applications. If your Mac came with DVDs, just insert the Applications disc and install them. If your Mac didn't come with DVDs, open App Store > Purchases, and download the iLife applications

  • Backed Up from macbook pro to external hard drive for use on PC--how to restore to macbook pro?

    Good evening,
My college student daughter uses her macbook pro, 13" Mid-2010,  for ALL her school work.  A few days ago it stopped working for her.  Blank screen.  Turned it off and on, blank screen with the gear spinning.  She took it to a place named MacExperience in Indy for diagnositcs.  The tech got it working and said it was OK now ($90 later).  Two hours later, same thing occurred.  She returned to the tech and he indicated it is in fact the logistics board that needs repair/replacement.
She purchased an external hard drive (G-Drive 500 GB mini FW800/USB 2/FW400 7200 RPM)--that is the description from the receipt she scanned and sent to me.   The tech backed up her files from the MBP to the  External HD so that the files are usable on a PC until the MBP is repaired.
Will her files be intact on the MBP once it is repaired?  More importantly, since the back-up was made from the MBP to use on a PC, how do we restore the files from the external HD back to the MBP so that she can use MBP with all her files, school work, etc.?
The tech said he will do it, but of course for another $90.  My point is, she needs to know how to do this in the event something like this occurs again (I sure hope not!!).  Furthermore, she will from now on back-up her files to the external HD, which she needs to learn to do, as well.
Thank you for your helpful replies.

I may be wrong, but I believe the format has something to do with it - note the sizes here (from the Help in Disk Utility on how to format a drive for Windows):

  • How to restore white macbook pro

I have the older white macbook pro.  Cd drive is dead, so using the external DVD reader.
I have the original disks it came with.
I am trying everything to get to that utility screen where I can restore the Laptop to factory.
It does not get past the blueish or grayish screen at startup when I hold the command R, or C keys.  Just hangs, and eventually brings me back to the regular login.
How can I do a factory restore, using another method?
maybe from after I login? is there a way I can do it.
    Thanks

iI've used iFixit before, and they've been great. I'd sooner trust iFixit than some random part off Ebay. I'd need the EMC number to identify the exact model of Mac you have, but it looks like you have one of these:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook
Identify the model you have, and then find the guide for the optical drive replacement and battery replacement in the collection of repair guides for that model. At the top of each guide there should be a link to the parts required for each repair.
I could be mistaken, but I think I saw replacement MacBook batteries in an Apple Store a week ago.

  • How to restore my MacBook Pro to default settings?

I do not want to save this information, i bought this computer and the person i bought it from has all of it somewhere. I just want to clear it up and start fresh with my macbook. Here are the details of my mac:
MacBook 13 inch. (Not pro it is old, but it's not air)
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Dup
    2GB 1067 MHz DDr3
    Macintosh HD
    Version 10.0.8
I do not know what software it runs with, i konw its not the new one, it's oviously not mavricks, not mountain lion, i do not know it looks old, and the background is outerspace... Here I'll attach a photo. (That is the default background)
It also doesn't have a Recovery HD hard drive, where i can switch and then do all that stuff to make it brand new software, there is only Macintosh HD, and Windows for some reason. Please please plase please help me.
Is there a way i can restore this computer as the way it was when the person bought it?
Thanks, if you have any questions please please ask.
    Thanks

It would have shipped originally with a set of restore optical disks, did the seller include those?  If they did, you can boot from that (hold the C key down during startup) and do an erase and install - wipe the hard drive clean (repartition if necessary) and then restore the original operating system it came with from the disk.
If you did not get the media, can you ask the seller for it?  If not, you can try calling Apple and see if they can ship you out a set of original disks for that machine (there would likely be a fee, but often not much).
    P.S. a 2.4Ghz core2duo Macbook sounds like it was a 2008 model
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP5 - if so, it should have shipped with OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

You cannot fix a deleted user account. Take it back to the school's IT department and have them fix it for you.

how to update and new version for my macbook 10.5.8

First check if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $30.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number.
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

  • HT1338 How to connect my MacBook Pro to my 23" Cinema HD Display?

My MacBook Pro has a Thunderbolt port and I have just bought a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adaptor to connect to my 23" Cinema HD Display which works fine on my old MacBook Pro.
However, although my new MBP can detect the display, the monitor does not switch on and there is no sign of life.
    Any thoughts, please?

Here you go - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019 - Use Video Mirroring.. if it fails

  • HT1338 how to make my MacBook pro faster

I was wondering if there is any software to clean and make my MacBook Pro faster and lighter???
I heard about the MacKeeper but I get some negative feedback about it....

    MacKeeper is garbage.
The best way to speed up your Mac is not to install garbage software, such as MacKeeper, or to uninstall it if you've already done so.
Beyond that, you can increase performance by replacing the internal hard drive with an SSD and/or adding memory.

  • How to restore a Macbook Pro after hdd failure?

    Hi!
My girlfriend posted a question about her MB Pro mid 2012 which apparently had a HDD failure; she was instructed to take a TimeMachine backup and switch a new HDD/SDD to replace it. Well, I started the TimeMachine copy, but unfortunately the computer crashed; now the computer starts, but keeps spinning the rainbow wheel while trying to log in. Any advice on how to proceed? Can the data be recovered? Can I do it somehow and if I wanted to change the SDD which she bought, how do I boot the computer without TimeMachine backup? Can it be done?
Normally this woudn't be such a huge problem, but unfortunately she needs to read for an exam AND write an academic text. Of course I could lend her my MB but unfortunately I have to do the same....
Solutions? Sorry couldn't find answers so I thought it easiest to just ask plain out straight.

So as a continuation, since she keeps asking, can I go ahead and just download the Yosemite from Apple Store and install it on the new SSD or will it fudge up the laptop again? The things I heard had something to do with kext or TRIM or something like that. Now keep in mind I'm no nerd, so I'm not up to full speed on how SSD and Yosemite work together.
It depends upon the SSD.  Here are a couple of excerpts by a trusted colleague of mine in a conversation regarding SSDs and other storage devices.  (I do not have an SSD)
    Also read this:
    http://blog.macsales.com/21641-with-an-owc-ssd-theres-no-need-for-trim
Bottom line is if the SSD does not need trim, then install Yosemite.  If it does, do not install Yosemite.
    Ciao.
