It is indeed all down to what you need to do with your machine.   Snow leopard is an excellent OS and as Baltwo suggests you have to check out your current apps and programs because PPC won't work on any higher OS than the one you have.
Andy's comment is very interesting and, I suspect, insider knowledge based     Certainly I would wait for Mavericks now it is on the horizon ... and then add six months or so for the bugs to be ironed out.
Good luck, whatever you do.   I'm staying with Snow Leopard.

As long as it meets the minimum requirements:
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    At least 2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space on hard drive
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • HT201364 I currently have Snow Leopard and want to update to Mavericks

I currently have Snow Leopard and want to update to Mavericks. When I go to the Apple Store the only available option is to download Yosemite but I don't want to.
Where can I find a download link for Mavericks?

Probably nowhere, and unless Apple says otherwise, definitely nowhere.

  • Presently have Snow  Leopard and want to upgrade to Maverick but don't want to lose data.  How to download safely? don't am worried about losing info.  How to download it without risk to current data.

Am currently using Snow Leopard and do not have access to I Cloud or latest version of I Photo.  Understand I can download Maverick free but am worried about losing data.  How to download Maverick and safeguard present files?

Mac OS X upgrades are designed so that none of your existing Applications or User data are intentionally deleted during a System Upgrade.
That works as long as there are no problems whatsoever.
Your best protection from data loss is good Backups. Before you upgrade, buy an External Drive at least 2 to 3 times the size of your User Data, and Turn on Time Machine. USB-2 enclosure drives are cheap, and fast enough for backups. If you will use this drive for everyday data, a faster interface would be much better.
Time Machine works quietly in the background, and does not "take over" your Mac to do the Backups. After the first large backup, it will quietly back up hourly, copying only the things that have changed since the last Backup. Time Machine is not the only Backup solution, or even the best solution out there. But it tends to be the Backup that actually happens, because you don't have to download any software, do extensive setup, or think about whether you should do it now or later.

  • Does mountain lion comes with graphic, Does mountain lion comes with graphi, Does mountain lion comes with graphic driver updates?  I'm currently using snow leopard, and it seems that there's no graphic driver updates for a really long time.

    Need some advice

I'm currently using snow leopard, and it seems that there's no graphic driver updates for a really long time.
Snow Leopard is no longer being updated, 10.6.8, was the last update. So, a "really long time," will be forever.
Yes, ML has graphic driver updates, but since there is no way to guess whether it impacts your unmentioned hardware, there is no way your question can be answered.

  • I want to triple boot Have Snow Leopard and XP on separate drives and I want Windows 7 on another drive, can it be done by temporarily removing the xp drive and installing windows 7 on another internal drive?

I want to triple boot my Mac Pro I have Snow Leopard and XP on separate drives (osx on drive 1, xp on drive 2) and I want Windows 7 on another drive (drive 4, drive 3 is used by osx for storage), can it be done by temporarily removing the xp drive and installing windows 7 on drive 4?
I realise bootcamp only allows 2 operating systems and refit could change the size of my current xp drive to accomodate W7, that is not an option here for various reasons one being the drive is pretty much at capacity with only about 30gig free (I work with video so that free space fluctautes quite a bit). I have a brand new drive 4 with 1TB set aside ready for W7 but I'm unsure how to go ahead?
any help or advice would be really appreciated, thanks

Boot Camp is used to support Windows on the same drive.
You can have a different OS on every drive.
You could have Windows 7, Vista, and XP all on one drive if you so choose.
I recommend not putting Windows and OS X on the same dirve when talking about Mac Pro - unless you just need something small and lite.
Remove all your other drives while you install Windows 7.
You could even relocate XP - if you need it even - or recover the hard drive space.
You should always keep 30% free for Mac OS; same for data/media drives.
Considering 1.5TB WD Black $110.... and you want OS X to be on a fast high performance drive as well.

  • Hello, I want to know if will lose my apps if I upgrade to Mavericks? I I have Snow Leopard, and I have not because I have fear of losing my apps

hello, I want to know if will lose my apps if I upgrade to Mavericks? I I have Snow Leopard, and I have not because I have fear of losing my apps

You will only lose Power PC apps.
To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mavericks.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • I currently use Snow Leopard and Microsoft Word, Excel and Entourage o my Mac.  If I upgrade to Mavericks, can I still use those applications?

I currently use Snow Leopard with Microsoft Word, Excel and Entourage on my iMac.  If I upgrade to Mavericks, can I still use those applications?

If the Microsoft Office is 2004 then no.
    Mavericks System requirements.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5842
Note I would recommend a minimum of 4GB RAM.
You need to check all you software and hardware including any peripherlas you use, printers etc that they are compatible with Mavericks.
Any software that is PPC and uses Rossetta will not work with any OS X verson later than 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
If you decide to upgrade have a tested backup of your current system in case of problems and you could return the computer to its previous configuration.

  • I have Snow Leopard and my Dad has Lion, why can my computer read things that his can't?

My Dad just got a new Mac Book Pro that has Lion installed, I have the same computer but it's one year older and has Snow Leopard. He is moving all of his stuff to his new computer and burned a DVD with pictures on from his old Toshiba. My computer can read the DVD just fine and I can take the pictures and put it on my computer, but when the DVD is instered into his computer it says the disk is blank. The pictures are saved on the old computer in JPEG form. Is there any way we can get his computer to read the disk/why isn't his computer reading the disk? Or do we just have to move the pictures a different way?

Perhaps you have some additional software to read whatever that Toshiba is writing. Regardless, it would probably be easier and faster to use a USB flash disk or share files from one of the machines to the other.

  • I have snow leopard and I am not sure how to upgrade

Can someone tell me what I need to do to upgrade my software from snow leopard to lion or mountain lion.  I know I need more memory but I have no idea how to install that.

No, the model 4,1 Early 2008 MacBook will not be able to run Mountain Lion, but it can run 10.7 Lion. Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.
It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion requires 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion no longer supports Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.
While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
