Thanks,
The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
Snow Leopard Tech Specs
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Other countries...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard and iTunes.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Next... MAVERICKS...
Check here to see if your Mac is compatible...
http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
NOTE:
It is both Prudent and Recommended to Backup Before any Major Update or Upgrade.
If so... would recommend at least 4GB of RAM... if not 8 GB
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
See Here  >  OWC RAM  >  http://www.macsales.com
The above site also has videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...
Also... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Mavericks, Lion and Mountain Lion...

I have an old Mac with OS X 10.5.8, can I upgrade to support FaceTime? Thanks

    KDam,
Please allow me to make a suggestion -- I looked on the Skype site regarding system requirements for Osx.
Accordingly, they list 10.5 as an acceptible operating system for their application.  In your case I would seriously consider Skype over FaceTime.  I don't think it's worth all the effort to go through the headaches such an upgrade can cause, just to be able to use FT.

Should I upgrade my software or get a new laptop?

    Hello,
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

Not Leopard... Snow Leopard! There is a difference.
Apple did not make it easy by giving them similar names.
    Purchase it here:

First, you need Snow Leopard (10.6): http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A. Then you use Software Update to update it to 10.6.8. When Mountain Lion (10.8) comes out, find it in the Mac App Store.

What are you talking about? 4.2.1, the latest version for the iPhone 3G, works fine - great, even - with it.

This article says you can keep using your email with devices that don't support iCloud: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4929?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I don't know what the required email settings are, though.

  • HT1338 if I have an old mac with OS X, how can I update if Apple doesn't recognise that I need an update?!!

if I have an old mac with OS X, how can I update if Apple doesn't recognise that I need an update?!!

You need to buy an upgrade if one is compatible with your Mac model.
PowerPC G3 Macs can only go to 10.4.11.
PowerPC G4 and G5 Macs can only go to 10.5.8.
Macs with a Core Solo or Core Duo CPU can only go to 10.6.8.
Core 2 Duo and better Macs can go to 10.7.5 or 10.8.3 depending on their model. Upgrading to either requires going through 10.6.

You can share it with other Macs under your control (not your neighbor's).  You just need to be logged in under the buying AppleID for updates or to download again.

  • Hi, I have a 2011 Mac with Os X 10.6.8. I need any Os update ? Txs joe

    HHi I have a 2011 Mac with Os X 10.8.1. Need any OS X update .?

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2463 is a guide to where to post. As for upgrading 10.8 is also known as Mountain Lion.    You can upgrade to 10.8.5 combo without losing too much compatibility, and that operating system does offer more security updates than under 10.8.1 alone.  Verify with any software you do have working that it has been tested under 10.8.5.  Tweaks may make some software fail.  10.9 and 10.10 are different enough that I wouldn't upgrade unless you are willing to handle interface changes and greater changes in compatibility.  Before upgrading, or installing new software always backup your data: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992

  • Hi, in our Enterprise environment, we have a single mac with Mavericks version 10.9.2 and Office for Mac 14.4.1. When setting up outlook, we are trying to connect to a mailbox on exchange server 2007.

Hi, in our Enterprise environment, we have a single mac with Mavericks version 10.9.2 and Office for Mac 14.4.1. When setting up outlook, we are trying to connect to a mailbox on exchange server 2007. We put in the EWS details in the server field since our autodiscover function is not functioning. But still it doesn't work. There are no errors, no popups. We turned on the logging and in the logs, it says a error of -3259. We are stuck and any help will be really appreciated.

I have a customer experiencing exactly the same issue. Their computer is running Windows 7 Pro with Office 2007 SP3. After seemingly exhausting all troubleshooting options, I backed up their data, formatted the hard drive and performed a clean install of
Windows and all their applications. It didn't solve the problem!
What's strange is the customer also has a laptop computer, running the same version of Outlook, and that doesn't experience any problems connecting to Office 365 on the same network.
My next step is to send the customer a new ADSL modem/router to try.
I have another customer on Office 365, also running Outlook 2007, and they also experience issues with emails sitting in the outbox while Outlook displays the status message “Outlook is trying to retrieve data from the Microsoft exchange server outlook.office365.com.”
In this case Outlook doesn't freeze/stop responding, like it does for the first customer I mentioned.

I have an i Mac with airport wireless. What steps do I need to take to change name of wireless(airport)???

You should use Airport Utility, in your Utilities folder (or you can search for it in Spotlight, the magnifying glass in the top right of your screen) to administer the Airport. There, you can change the wireless network settings, including the network name.
