  • Does a QMaster Cluster really make sense for Final Cut Server?

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I often am, but my understanding of the difference between setting up a "Cluster" and just using "This Machine" is the cluster allows multiple jobs to be processed simultaneously, while an unmanaged system will only do one job at a time. However, when it does that one job, it uses all the system's processors.
Yesterday I created a cluster consisting of two Quad Core Intel systems, and started Final Cut Server cataloging about a half a TB of data. I noticed that Server submits the Proxy render jobs one at a time, and that the jobs were being submitted to only one processor core, in a rotating fashion. Is there a way to make FCServer submit jobs in "parallel," or am I better off with using just the local system for transcoding?

The default proxy transcode setting seems to be specifically tuned to work at a small scale, which makes sense if you are asking a box to host the database, serve the app, and do all the proxy transcodes. I observed the same phenomenon, so I made my own transcode setting for proxies and I chose to lower the bitrate a bit to help with file size and transfer time. The upside is the floodgates are wide open when my 32 core Xeon cluster (four 8-cores) goes to town on a proxy encoding job.
Your other observation is also right, that only one item is encoded at a time across the cluster rather than working on all of them at once across the cluster. So what you get with a fast cluster is shorter encode time, not parallel encodings that all finish at the same time.
If you have the spare machines to dedicate to cluster work, I strongly endorse setting up that way. I would not recommend Quick Clusters for Final Cut Server encoding duty. Either set up a dedicated Managed Cluster that FCSvr can use or none at all.

  • Rough Cut Editor for Final Cut Server

    Hi everyone,
we are working on a Rough Cut Editor for Final Cut Server.
I'd like to know what you think about it and put a short video about its usage on my site at
    http://www.andre-aulich.de/en/perm/consol-rough-cut-editor-video
Any feedback would be very much appreciated!
    Regards,
    André

    Hi guys,
in addition to getting in touch with you personally, I'd like to answer some questions in public:
    LAN vs WAN
    ==========
The RCE in its current form is primarily built to be used in a LAN.
This is because you need both the Final Cut Server client as well
as the RCE client to connect to a central server using the ports
    3000, 80, 8821, and 8891.
In addition, we currently suppose the Edit Proxy folder to be an
edit-in-place device, so you need to open port 548 if you use AFP
for that. We might change that, but you still need the FCSvr client
    to connect to your server.
That said, we currently consider the RCE to be run in a local network.
    FEATURES
    ======
We are not planning to build a server ingest app, as there are other guys
    building these kinds of apps.
A standalone version of the RCE without Final Cut Server connectivity would
be easy to write, yet, we like to use FCSvr's proxies for preview, as this way
low bandwidth (meaning non-Fibre Channel) to the viewing stations is
    sufficient.
So today there's the RCE in its current form...
    AVAILABILITY
    ===========
We are doing our final testing and hope to release the app within
    the next two weeks.
As we need to install some tools on a server and have a look at its
environment, we would currently install the RCE ourselves, usually
    through a remote connection.
Yet, we already consider having selected partners to implement the
    RCE as well.
Currently there's no beta program being planned, as we do our
testing at a customer site, where we hope to evaluate the app
    quite comprehensively.
I hope that answers some questions.
For more questions, please feel free to get in touch with me.

  • Hardware Configurations for Final Cut Server

I am a small video production shop, currently running 2 standalone FCP stations; one Intel tower FCP7 with about 3T of firewire 800 Raid 1 storage, and one PPC G5 tower FCP6, on a gigibit ethernet network with a central NAS. I am adding a 3d station and a new employee. The problem we have run into is that many assets seem to always reside on the wrong system, and duplicate projects become impossible to resolve and archive effectively. We shoot exclusively on HDV.
This is the setup I am considering....
Convert the Intel Mac Pro tower to Final Cut Server
Buy 3 27"iMacs for edit stations
My plan would be to have all projects reside on the FCPServer and edit on 422 Proxy versions on the iMacs. I understand that each iMac would need a copy of FCP. Would they all need to be FCP7 to work on the same project at different times?
    Other questions:
Would working on a gigabit ethernet network be a bottleneck?
Could I ingest video directly to the server? Is there a way to capture 422 video onto the server or would that require a separate copy of FCP on the server to capture from tape? If so could I use the older FCP6 copy withot upgrading just for capture? Alternately could I use a copy of FCExpress on the server just to create a project and capture on the server then open and convert to FCP7?
Any suggestions for what to do with the Dual 2.5G PowerPC Tower?

ProRes wil be much faster for rendering on the client and transcoding on any machine, and will also allow for more realtime effects vs native HDV in FCP. "Full-rez" is a misnomer here, since ProRes Proxy does not sacrifice any resolution and indeed has a higher bitrate than native HDV. You might find that your HDV source looks just as good in ProRes Proxy (it is very high quality, just not as pristine as the higher quality versions of ProRes).
Remember, ProRes 422 Proxy is still a 4:2:2 10-bit codec. I think you'd need to look awfully close to see a qualitative difference. You can choose to use ProRes Proxy at lower resolutions than your source media, but you don't need to. It is designed to work all the way up to 2K and maintain all the color fidelity of a 10-bit codec.
When you check in a project that you are cutting locally with Edit Proxies, FCSvr relinks the project to the original media, but it does not render anything. You would need to open the project on the FCSvr host with FCP to create an flattened QuickTime against the original media (in your case native HDV).
You can recapture, but when you have FCSvr cataloging your clips, you do not want to recapture the same media and duplicate the asset. If you are careful and recapture the clips that were disposed of to the exact same location with the exact same filename as before, FCSvr will re-link the media to the asset automatically. However, that workflow is very human-error-prone and I strongly recommend you not adopt it. Keep your source HDV tapes as a worst-case backup, but if you are going to use FCSvr, use its archive capability to RAID-1 external drives and only go back to the tapes if all else fails. And you'll need to be very careful to match you prior ingest if you do.
Of course, you can always delete an asset altogether when you're done with its media and later recapture the footage from tape and treat it as a new asset. It depends on how interested you are in keeping your asset records and their proxies intact for media you plan to remove from storage.
I'd take a good long look at ProRes Proxy vs HDV for quality. If you can't see a difference, capture to ProRes Proxy and make that your online format. Then you won't be eating up all your storage on the server keeping both the HDV original and a ProRes Proxy for edit proxies. If you don't enable edit proxies, FCSvr just hands out the original media.

  • Small Office Network Solution for Final Cut Server - Proxy Storage Etc.

    Hi,
I haven't been able to find any answers for this question by googling, So I would love if anyone here had some advice. I have the 10 License version of Final Cut Studio with 5 clients at the moment. I would like to set-up our office in the most effective way, however we are a non-profit organization, so we are working with a limited budget.
My question is, does anyone know of any networking solutions for Proxy Storage and Media storage, that wont bottleneck, but is not as high budget/high tech as using an Xserve/XSan system?
Right now we would be looking at running Final Cut Server off of our 24inch Intel IMac (Going to beef up the RAM). We have a Gigabit Switch, 4 more intel machines running final Cut pro, and a direct attached Drobo for Media Storage. I know this is not an Ideal set-up, but it's what I have to work with right now. So, I'm looking for any kinds of tips and tricks to make this set-up work for us, and am looking at purchasing either a Network Attached or iscsI storage system for the Proxy Storage.
I hope this is a decent description of my situation, and would love some advice.
    Thanks Very Much,

  • Update for Final Cut Pro 6.0.1

    Hi helpful folks,
I just installed Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 on my MacBook Pro. I work at a post production facility, and all the other guys in the shop are running 6.0.4. I was told that what I installed was the same thing everyone else installed. So I ran Software Update. It searched and installed updates for LiveType, DVD Studio, and several other programs. But did not come back with update results for Final Cut Pro. I installed the other programs, restarted, and have since run Software Update three more times. It claims everything is up to date. But obviously 6.0.1 is not the latest version. Any thoughts?

The update to 6.0.5 (6.0.4 is not available from apple any longer) is included in a Pro Apps update or something titled along those lines. It is not named "FCP update".

  • Updates for Final Cut Studio, Quicktime, and OS X on new iMac?  Which ones?

    Hello All,
Okay, so I have been searching through the forums about updates for all the software updates, and which ones work and which ones don't. The Tiger vs. Leopard battle. The ones that have had no problems doing all the updates and the ones who are suffering terribly. But it is really hard to pinpoint everything since it is all spread out over so many different pages. So I am hoping that this question will be of benefit to others in my situation.
So I have a new iMac Alu 24" 2.4 ghz, and 4 gig of RAM. I did software update for everything except the OS and not for Quicktime. So I am running OS X 10.4.10 and Quicktime 7.2
I installed FCP Studio 2 without a hangup. I did not even bother to install Color because I knew that it would be more then this GPU could handle. I didn't bother with Live Type either. Don't use it at work and don't think it will be any different at home. So I intalled FCP 6, Compressor 3, Motion 3, Soundtrack 2, and DVD Studio 4. I have done no updates to any of the Studio programs. So I am looking for some opinions (more then one would be appreciated). What updates should I do and which ones should I avoid for my particular setup? I want to do this as right as I can the first time around.
Again sorry, if this seems redundant, but I want to get everything together in one place to make sure that I don't miss something from split up forums. And hopefully this will help others. Sorry about the length.
    My Current Situation:
Alu iMac 24" 2.4ghz, 4 gig of RAM
    OS X 10.4.10
    Quicktime 7.2
    Final Cut Pro 6.0
    Motion 3.0
    Compressor 3.0
    DVD Studio Pro 4.0
    Soundtrack Pro 2.0
Which updates? If the almighty Shane Ross would like to step in, please feel free to. Thanks folks for any and all help.

UPDATE: Okay, so I gave my Final Cut a really simple run through last night. Just shot some footage on the HV20 and imported it and did the Apple recommend workflow for the reverse telecine. (I know, I know, doing the full out reverse telecine to get it to 24p is unnecessary if I am just going back to video, but I just wanted to give it whirl) Anyways it worked, and it came out great. So I dropped into a 24p timeline and through it together, and no software malfunctions. No complaints. During log and capture, there was a lag between my player and the computer, but the footage after capture was right on targert (I am referring to audio sync).
So as long as it works, I am happy. Besides, I don't plan on using on board audio too much since there are no XLR inputs unless I get a Beachtek. Different story, sorry.
So currently, with absolutely no Studio updates, OS X 10.4.10, and QT 7.2, on a brand new iMac, 2.4ghz, 24", everything is as it should be. I'll keep checking back in to see if anyone recommends an update for me or if I encounter problems and what caused them.

I am new to Mac Book Pro so I need help!!!

You get FCPX legally only via AppStore; it then gets 'bonded' to your AppleID/Appstore account.
To update, log in with the Account you have purchased it - click update (for free)
If you don't have the Account data, you're not owner of the software. No free drinks updates.

  • *** Help finding update for FInal Cut Studio

I'm running FCP 5.0.4 but need to be on the version my new editor is using (5.1.3). I've tried to go to the Apple site, and I've downloaded the 5.1.3 update, but it won't let me update unless I do some updates in between which I can't find.
Can anyone send me the links I need to get from 5.0.4 to 5.1.3?

It's really important to keep your discs. Ignoring this crossgrade issue, what would you have done had your system drive crashed and you'd simply had to reinstall the software? Always keep your original software discs somewhere safe.
As to the 'unusual and unreasonable' issue, you're not the first or last to complain about this - none of us were very happy about it. But remember that Final Cut Studio when installed is about a 35GB suite of applications and media. There's simply no way that would have been doable by Apple as a download. Imagine the number of people who's connections would have dropped during the download, or who simply don't have the bandwidth to download something that large?
Some things are best done the old way! Anyway - try the XML sequence exchange I mentioned above, that'll save you the money, hassle AND the time.

  • What OS for final cut server

Should I install on Snow Leopard server or just Snow Leopard?
What are the pro and cons?
I have a server in our office and FCS system and I am just thinking about combining them.
    Thanks for the response.

You can run both on one Mac, no problem, if it's a stand alone workstation. You don't need OS X Server in that case. You only need OS X Server if you're going to use XSAN or Ethernet and connect two or more workstations.
FCSvr 1.5 requires FCP 7 (FCS 3), and Snow Leopard (server or not), for best performance.

  • Final Cut Server 1.1.1 & Pro Apps Update

Many of you have been experiencing various issues with the Compressor & Qmaster process crashing and needing to resort to the only resolution to fix this issue:
    - Stop FCSvr, reinstall the QMaster Node.pkg, start FCSvr, and stop FCSvr services to get the issue fixed.
Many others have wished for Final Cut Server would recognize all the metadata for video clips capture via:
    - FCP Log and Transfer
    - Capturing from a Sony XDCAM HD source
    - P2
without using the very time consuming approach of dynamic metadata mapping.
Many other have yearned for Final Cut Server to recognize EXIF metadata from images
    Well wait not longer.
Download, Install, and Test the updates released today via Apple Software Update or by manually downloading them from:
    http://www.apple.com/support/finalcutserver/
I must personally say thanks to the Mac OS X team, Pro Apps Team, and Final Cut Server team for resolving these issues.
The product is very great and will only be better with stability and reliability update like these.
Shame to everyone that has posted on the Final Cut Server discssion list complaining about these issues. Software development is no easy task, bug take careful time to fix and test before being released into the wild. We need to thank Apple more often for creating careers and a market place for everyone that is creative professional, systems administators, or technology consultants like myself.
    Enough said.

I have one thing to say. The team that writes and maintains FCSvr could probably fit around a dinner table. It's a complex app to say the least.
http://bugreporter.apple.com/(Free ADC account needed) should be the place where we direct all bugs and feature requests. Don't assume they know about it. Also, if you do use this, please follow the guidelines in submitting a report.
It's a bit of work, but the developers appreciate a well written feature request and/or bug report. If we as the "soldiers in the trenches" give our feedback this can only get better.
    http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/bugbestpractices.html

All that said, all the latest updates seem to be fairing well so far (touch wood). Even QuickTime!

  • Download Final Cut Server update 1.1.1 ?

    Hi,
Anyone know how (or where ?) to download an earlier update to Final Cut Server (v1.1.1) ?
No problem for download v1.5.2 on Apple Download Support, but the v1.1.1 link takes me back to Final Cut Pro X...
    Thanks.

Use Software Update to install the 1.1.1 update on a system running Final Cut Server 1.0 or 1.1.

  • FINAL CUT SERVER "UPDATE", YES, I said UPDATE!

    Everyone,
I was just playing around on our Final Cut Server and ran a software update. I immediately saw that there were 2 updates: 1 for Final Cut Server and another which involved compressor!
The Final Cut Server update said that it resolves the check-in/check-out issues with projects! Hopefully the compressor update fixes all the qmaster issues we've been having.
    - Ryan Salazar

After doing the server update as well as update to FCP 6.0.4 on the client systems, I see that we can now check-in/check-out projects!!!

  • SLS and Final Cut Server

    Hi.
I'm running FCServer on an iMac, and I'm currently looking for the best solution for giving co-workers outside of our office network remote access to our FCS database. The main purpose for this is for remote users to screen and download episode segments and movies from our database.
I was initially thinking VPN would be the only solution, but then I saw Snow Leopard Server has 'Mobile Access Server' built right into the OS, which appears designed to help users avoid having to use a VPN.
Before I go out and buy SLS for the company, I want to be sure it will work. Am I correct that Snow Leopard Server, and the built-in Mobile Access Server, will allow users outside of our network remote access to our FCSrvr database?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Thank you for your response.
I posted this in the Final Cut Server forum as well and got this response:
+"Mobile Access Server will give outside access as VPN would, which will be handy if you want to access Final Cut Server using the Java client app. It will also give you VPN access for non-FCSvr uses, like email and Web.+
+If all you want is a subset of your FCSvr database, then you could also publish selected content to a Web/FTP/WebDAV server in your DMZ."+
If anyone else could offer some insight it would be greatly appreciated. I'm just an audio/video post-production guy, so this is all a little outside of my training.
    Thanks.
