The suggestion to reset the SMC is a good one, just in case the power management in your Mac needs a reset.
However, the fan loudness depends a lot on the type of Mac you are using, and also on the programs you are running.
Our iMac (2008) Core 2 Duo has fans, but you'd never know it as they run only with the quietest hum, if at all, or I just can't hear them.
On the other hand, the last two Macbook Pros that I have had (2010 and 2012 models) were usually quiet but their fans would revv up quite loudly when viewing streaming video, doing certain things in Firefox, etc. My daughter's Macbook Air is very quite except when running PhotoShop + iPhoto + Firefox and then its fans get loud.
You have a Macbook pro. Do the fans run loud always, or only when you use certain programs, video, etc.

  • A few months ago my fan started making a lot of noise and is getting really hot. I've taken steps to prevent overheating, but nothing has changed. Is it a battery issue?

I've had the computer for 2 1/2 years and it started getting really noisy about 4 months ago. I'm using rulers to elevate the computer above the surface of the table to prevent overheating, but its still getting really hot and the fan is still making a lot of noise on and off. Could this be a battery issue?

  • Why is my iMac's CPU fan making a lot of noise?

    Hello!
My 27" iMac (late 2009) is making a lot of noise for the last few months. The noise doesnt occur when you start up, but after you do something what is not really intensive for the computer suddenly the CPU fan is going up to about 4000 rpm. I have tried resseting the PRAM and the SMC but it won't help. I have inserted an image so you can take a look for yourself!
    Kind regards,
    Emiel

Try resetting the iMac SMC and PRAM reset again, this time do each reset 2x. On occasion the first time does not work, but if it continues to be noisy then you probably have a mechanical problem and the fan may need replacing.

  • IMAC fan is making a very loud noise

    Hello,
    Does somebody has similar problem?
I switch on the iMac and the fan is making too much noise that I can not hear the sound on the computer and the there is a lot of air coming out.
It is on all the time and I already open a SR with the apple care to repair it, I left the computer for a few days in the apple center but they do not fix it, apple do not care about it.
I have this problem since I bought the iMac.
Sometimes it is no making noise it is quite.
I read that some iMacs have this problem and Apple did not do anything to sort this problem, at least mine was not fixed.
I bought the Apple care but it is useless because Apple does not want to fix this problem, they said that they were not able to reproduce the problem.
Any help let me know, please.
    Thank you.
    Maria

It can be caused because of different reasons: a process which is eating your CPU, a defective fan, a problem with the SMC, etc. First, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 This program will allow you to diagnose problems with the hardware of your computer, although this may fail and it may not show anything. When you run Apple Hardware Test, make sure you tick the box to run an extended test. Finally, if you see an error at the end, copy it here and copy it in a piece of paper and take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller, because it indicates that there's a hardware problem with your iMac and it must be fixed

  • New mac pro making a lot of noise

my mac pro is not even a month old... but after about 15 mins of use it makes a lot of noise.. i think it's the cooling fan. it is noticeably much noisier than my 3 yr old macbook. and it seems to get pretty hot as well (hotter than my old macbook)...
has anyone got the same issues?

During the time it's getting really hot and you're not doing any heavy-load work, check Activity Monitor and check your CPU usage. Do you have any apps that are hogging the CPU at that moment? Carbonite is a big problem with CPU usage, if you have that installed, I'd watch that. Also, you could try downloading some utilities that check fan speed/temperature. If the fans are revving for no real reason, could be an issue.
It wouldn't hurt to reset the PRAM and SMC, as this can have an affect on the fans.

  • My air is making a lot of noise.

I think it is the fan but it mostly happens when I skype. It slows down the video and voice feed. Anyone know what it might be? Or am I screwed and have to take it to the store?

I have been having lots of problems with my iPad 2 freezing since I downloaded the IOS7.  It freezes for several minutes each time this happens.  Is there something you can suggest that I do to eliminate this problem in the future?

First thing to try is a reset: Hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go.

  • My MacBook Pro 2009 Fan is making a weird "revving" noise

    Hi,
This has started to happen recently on my 2009 13" MacBook Pro.
The fan, when running ANY higher than 2000 rpm makes a revving noise.
NOTE: This is COMPLETLEY different to just the high speed fan noise. I do know what that sounds like.
It sounds like the fan is somewhat scraping on something, but when I looked at it there doesnt appear to be anything in there.
When it runs a bit faster, it actually sounds like a revving engine... while running at the same speed.
This is no longer under the AppleCare warranty.
Here is a video of the noise... (its still processing but sh
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgFed4RMV-g

Replace the fans yourself, visit iFixit and other Mac places to order parts.
By the way, you didn't focus on the smcFan control's stats in the Finder to see the revving, barely can hear anything like revving at all, just a heavy blowing which is expected at 6000 RPM.
remake the video or lit's likely smc needs a update.

  • My fan is making a consistent loud noise with no processes running?

The fan noise is continuous and only stops once the computer has shut down. The second I turn it on again the fan noise begins.
I ran a hard drive check and there were no errors.
