  • Laptop screen goes completely black but shows that it's still on

Hello everyone, i'm in need of serious help!
I bought this laptop over 2 years ago (October of 2008 to be somewhat exact). It's a Windows Vista Home Premium, with service pack 2.
its an HP pavilion dv7 notebook pc
processor: AMD Turion (tm) X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-70  2.00 GHz
    Ram: 4GB
    system type: 64-bit operating system
im assuming the video card information are as follow:
name: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
chip type: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics (0x9612)
    DAC type: Internal DAC (400MHz)
    total memory: 1914MB
    memory: 3836MB RAM
page file: 2163MB used, 5732MB available
    current display is 1440 x 900 (32 bit)(60Hz)
    directx version: directx 11
with that being said... here's my dilemma...
Each time i play the video game, "World of warcraft", my laptop's screen goes completely black but it shows as if though it is still on. I can't see the screen but it shows that it is still on by the little lights on the bottom of the screen.
I took my laptop to a family friend who knows a lot about computers to see if they can fix it for me. They told me that everything was running fine, everything is okay, the ram, memory, graphic card, everything passed the test, and it was not over heating... there was nothing wrong with my laptop. They THOUGHT it could be the motherboard, so they tried it, but in the end, it wasn't. Unfortunately the problem was not solved.
I played World of warcraft on this laptop before. When i first bought it. It ran smoothly and gave me no problem whatsoever. I'm clueless is to though why it's giving me problems NOW.
Could anyone please please pleaseeeee help me? i have given up already. I have done everything i could. Please help me! i believe i have done a total one 1 or 2 system restore to factory settings, the 2nd one was recently (probably a month ago) and i'm not sure if maybe perhaps i needed to DL something else? i have DL all the updates that microsoft offered to me when needed and when it was necessary, but this particularly problem was never fixed.
someone please help me! Thank you so much!

    erichon99,
I think i may have found MY solution but i have yet to test it out... No one helped me. No one at all. I took my PC to a family friend company and they did everything for me: ran tests to see if my laptop is up to date with everything, removed graphic card and put a better one and nothing still. They thought it was my mother board but they ran tests again and everything on my laptop past the test. My graphic card was fine, ram was perfect, memory was perfect, everything everything on my laptop was perfect. They couldn't find out what was the problem. I took it to best buy and not even them could help me. When i was about to give up, my fiance, he did some research and found this guy on youtube who does LIVE recordings and answers people's questions. My fiance asked the question and he got serveral responses. Out of 10, i would say about 2 or 3 of them mentioned, "it's the power cord" the rest said it might be virus, or a card is not working properly, etc. You can give it a shot (buying a new power cord) those who told my fiance that it could be my power cord, said to get those power cord that has a fan in them.
I think this makes sense because my screen goes black only when i'm playing a game. even when i play cityville on facebook it goes that black screen, but it doesn't go black, it does that pixelated, rainbow, warning bar, thingy (i hope you know what i mean lol) and when i touch my power cord to my laptop it is BURNING hot. What i do is, when my battery is fully charge, i disconnect and play my game, and to not lose any docs i left open, i close my games, and plug back in. I've been lazy to find another power cord lol i guess i should start now, huh? lol
i hope this help. I would say (if you've done everything like how i did) buy a power cord that matches your laptop, but with a FAN in it (i was told it's the best and you'll never have that problem of freezing or whatever)

  • GX660 screen goes completely black for a moment

Is it normal when sometimes you open a program screen goes completely black (no led backlight) for a second or two before it turns back on with "user acces control" table? Other times it doesnt go black.
edit: i found out that it do that after reboot/hibernate/sleep at first time opening program.

Try a Battery pull please, with the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery 15 seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot device. This will clear all cache like rebooting a PC. Then try again and see if your problem persists.

  • IPad goes completely black while using it, comes back in a few seconds

iPad goes completely black while using it, comes back in a few seconds battery doesn't hold charge either

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank then power ON again in the normal way.] It is 'appsolutely' safe

  • How do I make my iMac screen completely black - without sleep or turning it off?

I have somebody sleeping in my office who finds the light from my iMac disturbing, even when it's turned down to the lowest level.
Is there an easy way, just for a few days, to make the screen completely black at night - I don't want it to sleep or to switch it off so I can use it early in the morning remotely.

What you are suggesting, puts the computer to sleep. just what fusbariclation does not want to do. He/she just wants to put the display to sleep.
On my iMac, my Macbook Pro, my Wife's Macbook Air and her Macbook Pro the Control-Shift-Eject just turns off the screen, but the iMac continues to run, which if very important for me, as my iMac is a web server for the rest of my team at work.  I generally hit Control-Shift-Eject as I'm leaving the office every night.
HOWEVER, since the OP (Fustbariclation) wants to access the iMac remotely, and wants the screen to be blacked out during the remote access so it will not disturb the guest in the same room with the iMac, my Control-Shift-Eject does not work for the OP.  I missed that essential tidbit in the original problem description.
Other contributes have come through with working solutions for Fustbariclation

  • Everytime I start to install Windows into my bootcamp partition the screen goes completely black after installing.

    Hi All,
I'm using an iMac late 2009 ( Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, $gb 1067 MHz DDR3, ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB) with OS X 10.8. I've Boot Camped my Mac Book pro so I'm familiar with the steps to do it.
I've made a partition and downloaded the windows support data to an external hard drive. So I'm at the part where I'm installing windows (I'm installing Windows 7 Home Premium), everything goes smoothly and it installs everything but when it restarts and gets past the loading screen everything goes black and nothing happens. it doesn't get to the point where I put the serial number or set the time.
I thought it was an issue with my OS X so I removed the partition and re-installed my OS X 10.8. Then I've tried re-Boot Camping and installing windows but still no luck!
Anyone have any ideas on what I could do next? Any help is most appreciated

Why it would be OS X?

  • IMac goes to black screen only cursor visable

On start up, my iMac shows the first screen (apple logo), then spinning "wheel", then goes to a black screen.  Can only see the cursor.  Any suggestions?

    Hi cojoe,
If you are having issues with starting up your iMac, I would recommend first trying to start in Safe Mode as described in this article -
OS X Mavericks: Start up in safe mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204
Note that the article applies to the Snow Leopard operating system (Mac OS X 10.6) as well as to Mavericks, the process is the same.
You may also want to refer to this article for further steps -
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

Again, while some of the symptoms differ from yours, the steps are still useful.

  • HT1551 Apple TV searches for date and time settings, then the screen goes completely black and I get no response from the remote. Any suggestions?

I've moved to Sweden from Canada, and when I plug my Apple TV in, I get the LED light and the Apple logo, followed by the Setting Date and Time message. After that, everything goes black and I can't make any selections. The LED lgiht is still on however.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.

  • Flickering Powerbook Screen then goes completely black

My powerbook screen has started flickering and then goes black. I can still see faint images on the screen, so it has not died. When it does go black I can get it to come back on by holding the the screen dimmer button down and then taking the brightness back up. The same thing will happen almost instantly. Any ideas?

Hi, I had exactly the same problem. It lasted over a year, when I positioned the display horizontally it worked fine or when I placed a laptop against a wall or something that would very lightly push the screen from the back (even a finger touch). Sometimes the display found its good position and could stay without any support for few days. So it didn't make me go repair it immediately and I kind of got used to it. Until last week when it flickered for the last time, stayed black a no pushing or no dim button would help and made me overcome my laziness to drive to Apple center. It cost me 500 shekels in israel to repair, it's around 150 USD. The repair report says that board inverter was exchanged.

  • My Ipad 2 no longer displays anything. It may come on for a few seconds, but then half of the screen goes completely black, and the system becomes non responsive to all bottons. At other times all four sides of the display becomes black, about 1/4 inch.

Can anyone help me on this one? I got my IPAD 2 in June 2011. It never gave problems until a few days ago. It began to "hang", becoming non-responsive to all buttons. Then just yesterday morning, it went totally black. The display no longer displays. The Battery was charged 96%. I tried the power adapter, but had the same result. I tried the resetting, holding the two buttons for 10 seconds or more but no result. I have already restored it to the factory setting,(via my PC) and put back my apps etc. But after all this I still cannot see anything on the screen.
I know it is still working, because from time to timer I hear the message alerts, and other sounds.
    Waht is the likely solution?

    Try a Reset...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.
If no joy... Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

  • My screen on the imac starts to load then goes to black screen when turned on

how do I reboot my desktop as when it turns on it starts to  load then it goes to a black screen

I had the same issue with my 2008 iMac and Apple support walked me through a fix ...
    1. Shut the computer down by holding the power button for 10 seconds
    2. Restart the computer and press shift at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving
    3. Once you reach the point where your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password, then hit Enter.
    4. After a moment, you should see the spinning beach ball
    5. Your screen should then move on to something along the lines of "Completing OSX Installation" (I can't remember the exact wording). Let it finish. After that it should go to your normal desktop and the issue should be fixed. (If your screen goes pitch black during this process, hit the space bar. I thought it wasn't working, but the screen was just sleeping).
Apparently it's an issue with an automatic update that never quite got past the login screen.
If this doesn't help then try reinstalling whatever version of OS X you are using.

  • IMac is on but screen is completely black

My iMac is on, but the screen is completely Black. I cant see anything. What can I do?

Press the power switch until the machine turns off. Feel the back of the case. If it is hot, unplug it and let it cool. If it is already off and not hot, unplug it for 15 seconds and then turn it on and see if it boots. Then check out this page... http://9to5mac.com/2013/08/16/apple-opens-graphics-card-replacement-program-for- some-mid-2011-imacs/  I just started having a problem with my machine. Your problem sounds similar. For now I am running smcFanControl (you can google that) to ramp up my fans and I have made an appointment with my Genius Bar to have my machine looked at.

  • IMac display issues: black icons and folders, doubled up files in finder windows, programs won't update

    HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help with my iMac 27" purchased in 2010.  From a previous discussion I started a year ago, I have had virtually nothing but trouble with it.  After the internal hard drive crashing, I was able to install OS X on an external drive and used it for a good 8 months to drive my iMac and I took it to an expert who has replaced it with a 3tb HDD, but at some point the display has gone crazy.  I am not certain if it is hardware, i.e. graphics card or video but I'll describe the symptoms and add some pics to see if anyone has seen this before and knows what the problem may be.
    1.     90% of the screen was covered with white with just a portion of the desktop showing through.
(This happened when I tried to reinstall OS X on the old HDD and the new one, but didn't happen when using OS X install disc)
    2.     Files, folders, photos and some icons on the dock go black
    3.     Files and photos double up when in Finder.  When I'm viewing photos, it shows them but all the previous panes and the photos are jumbled behind the
            photos.
    4.     Anything I open in Preview is completely black, but ColourSync Utility opens everything fine.
    5.     Programs won't update.  They will download onto my iMac but won't update.  Some say, because I don't have OS X 10.6.8 others just won't open.
Including Google Chrome, opens with two tabs open but when I open a third tab the rainbow wheel just turns.  Skype won't open just gives a failure
            report.
    6.     10.6.8 Update Combo downloads but when I restart the screen is covered in white - as in 1. and I have to reinstall OS X 10.6.2 to get the screen to               clear but then all the above problems continue.
    7.     Sometimes videos don't display in Youtube, or the entire page other than the video player is covered in rainbow lines.
    8.     Some buttons are blacked out on selection pages, i.e. system preferences, or saving screens
    9.     Photos opened in FB go upside down and flicker all over the page as my mouse runs over them.
    10.   Photos won't upload into internet editing programs.
I can't find anyone who has had the same issue in all of the discussions I've looked at, but it sounds like I have a video problem, but I wondered if it might be a software problem with flash or something.  Or I have something malicious on my computer.
I also have an iphone 5 that faulted with the iTunes and USB icons and won't fix after trying one of those R-Sims, and I wondered if somewhere along the line it may have even had a virus/trojan/malware that has infected my external drive and then my internal drive.  A reason I have thought that is because I have used my daughter's MacPro laptop and plugged in my external drive and I noticed the windows in hers were starting to do the same thing.
And on top of all that, my fans didn't work for over a year and I had to place an external fan at the back of the computer or it would overheat and shut down, but after resetting the SMU it started working again, but it is very noisy. I have tried to download SMC Fan Control and although it downloads to the HDD, it won't open.
Sorry its such a long post, I do hope with all of this information someone can help me.
    Thanks so much.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and *Sophos Enterprise AV*. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly*
Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

  • Why iMac goes into coma booted in Ext HD Tiger hot plugging USB cable?

    Folks:
Had this question posted as "iMac goes into deep coma w/hot plugging USB cable??" on the "using your iMac G4" forum, got 63 views but have not received any replies there. Since I was booted up in Tiger 4.11 on my FW Ext HD, thought I'd try to post over here to see if I get some sage advice from this forum.
Was trying to experiment with ways to get my scanner to work if I finally decide to upgrade my iMac to 10.4.11 by booting up Tiger using External HD by firewire and then plugging in the scanner after that. As soon as the USB plug touched the port the computer "went black"--total crash. Took about 5 mins before I was able to resuscitate the machine with the power button. I repeated my experiment in the same manner and down she went again, down and out . . . . Tried to start it for a few minutes, nothing, went to dinner, came back, nothing. Finally, unplugged it for a minute and then she came back to the land of the living . . . .
When I restarted from the 10.1.5 internal HD I plugged the scanner in and opened the scanner app in Classic and all was fine. I like being able to use Classic apps and if it wasn't for the fact that my Camino browser is starting to crash when browsing the newer websites I'd have no reason to upgrade. Even if I get a new Intel computer I won't be able to boot back into the Power PC operating systems, right?
Anyway, would like to know if it is "well known" that you can't hot plug peripherals when booted up in external HD or if this is a "special problem" that only I am experiencing?
    Thanks,
    e.e.p.

Since the issue could be in the peripherals or the computer involved, this could
be a hardware failure of some kind. If you have replaced the USB cable, and all
other variables have been double or triple-checked, even a problem with the
computer's power supply could be at fault. Or there may be a partial short in one
of the electrical circuits involved with this USB cable and whatever it supports.
Please re-explain these other operating systems and their locations, since the
10.1.5 and other stuff seems irrelevant. Unless there is a hardware failure.
    And that is a possibility.
If you got an old early model Intel mac with 10.4.11 running in it, that would not
support Classic OS9 based apps directly. However, there are several sources
for replacement parts and also complete repaired and guaranteed PPC Macs.
There are limits in some, in what OS X versions and practical uses they may
allow now, with less online support & dwindling apps to run on the older OS X.
You may be able to look into the system logs and crash reports, via Console
Utility, to see what kinds of errors reports & crash logs the computer created.
Also, in System Profiler, there should be a Software> Logs section and it may
have some recent activity logs there. You can compare log creation times with
the intervals of these failures and see if a report matches your experience in
a real-time error log or other.
Is this USB port where the failure occurs, located in the external drive enclosure
or in the computer attached to it? What kinds of external FireWire devices and
USB devices are involved? Have you ran just the bare-bones computer & seen if
there are problems in just that, by itself? Troubleshooting invites checking it alone.
If there is an overload of some kind regarding a power supply failure under
only some circumstances, you could try a powered USB hub when using
several items attached to the computer; so it would carry that load.
Anyway, it sounds like a magical mystery tour is in store, in there.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Bootcamp - Win 7 Install goes to black screen

    Hi folks, I'm running a 15" MBP Mid 2009.
    2.8 Core 2 Duo
    8 GB RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 9400M 256 Mb
    OSX 10.8.5
Just this weekend I purchased Mountain Lion and decided to start completely fresh. Used the AppStore download to create a USB boot disk. Removed all existing partitions (Read: used disk utility to erase and format as MacOS Extended (journaled)). Installed the fresh copy of OSX to this new partition. Once in the OS I configured my settings, installed iLife and Office and updated all software. All is well with OSX, now it's time for Windows 7.
I run bootcamp assistant. I resize the partitions such that Windows gets 250GB and MacOS gets 500GB. It prepares a usb stick with support files on it then makes sure it's not bootable. I insert my Windows 7 Ultimate disk and get ready to reboot.
Once I reboot I can hear the disk churning and working but the screen is completely black. Tried closing and opening the lid and nothing. Eventually my only choice is to hold the power button for 5 seconds. I use the option key to boot back into OSX fine and everything is as expected there.
For reference the disk i am using is the same exact disk I had used previously to install Windows to this very machine. I have also tested it on other PC's to verify it is bootable so that may rule out a lot of the common suggestions. I also re-burned the same iso at a slower speed and I'm getting the same results with both disks.
What I've found on the web and/or tried:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173 - Seems to be related to the iMac of the same year. I'm hesitant to install iMac drivers on a MBP. However I have a feeling that the issue might be related.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2600 - Resetting PRAM and SMC did not resolve the issue. Still unable to boot to the Windows 7 Boot disk
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4536 - This described a different problem as I do not have the blinking cursor, however I did try removing the USB drive that OSX prepares but no luck there either.
http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/12275/black-screen-when-installing-boot -camp - References the first 2 KBs I found but the interesting suggestion here was to try a second monitor. The best I had available was a mini display port to VGA and using a VGA-to-DVI cable to talk to my monitor (which has no VGA port). No luck there. tried plugging/unplugging the adapter a few times.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1229631 - On this thread, Post #18 suggests that the new EFI does not allow booting off CD and apparently the USB stick needs to be bootable to make changes to the EFI to allow it to boot from CD. I'm not sure about the validity of this claim but I did download the BootCamp 4.0.4033 for the MBP mid 2009 to try to make a bootable USB - This is on my list of 'to try' items
I knew I was hitting a point where pretty soon I won't be able to self-prescribe the solution so I came to the community for answers.

I have a case open with Apple Support. It is currently in escalation. I will update this thread once I have more information from them.
In the meantime I have tried:
Created a slipstreamed Windows 7 install image with the apple drivers available for my MBP in the bootcamp support files and made both a DVD and a USB install. Both drives are verified bootable, neither resolved the blackscreen issue. Either the graphics driver is not the issue or the drivers I slipstreamed into the install did not work.
Any other thoughts or troubleshooting ideas are greatly appreciated at this time while I wait until Friday for escalation to get back to me.
