HT1338 Imac won't wake from sleep when a facetime call comes in

My Imac will not awake from sleep when a FaceTime call comes in.

I've had this problem several times now, and I do no own MobileMe. I don't use any bluetooth peripherals, but I've noticed that the precursor to the problem is that my bluetooth icon in the menubar goes from normal to "Bluetooth Unavailable." Then at some point later on, I put the iMac to sleep and it won't wake up.
I've read elsewhere that the bluetooth unavailable problem may be connected to the power management unit, which may in turn explain what is going on with it not rebooting. But I'm not sure.

Since installing Lion my iMac (intel core 2Duo) won't wake from sleep properly using my wireless keyboard, trackpad or magic mouse! I haven't changed any settings and I have to hold down the power button to force shut down and then restart! Any help?? x

    Hi all
Finally went to the Genius Bar to ask the question as nothing has worked.  They said I needed to reset my PRAM.  I did it (Following these instructions... http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 ) and it worked.
So relieved....it was really annoying me.
Hope this helps others with the same issue.

  • Powerbook won't wake from sleep when unplugged from power

    hi everyone,
    i have a 15" 1ghz titanium powerbook, running 10.4.6.
recently (maybe since 10.4.6?) i haven't been able to wake the machine from sleep when i unplug it from powering up in sleep mode, to open it up someplace else to run it on batteries for a little while. i always have to do a hard-reboot (holding down the startup button for several seconds). this usually destroys my dock and other preferences when i'm "back in".
does anyone know what might be causing this? it seems to be a recent development. it's unpleasant, because i frequently have the powerbook charge itself while asleep, and then i want to unplug it and quickly do something in another room running it on batteries. afaik sleeping and awakening works fine as long as i don't plug/unplug the power cable before waking it up.
any hints would be greatly appreciated...thank you!

    Hi A.L.,
I have a Cinema Display which I often use on the back of my Ti. I know the laptop will not wake if there is no power and it has an external DVI display attached.
Perhaps your computer thinks it has some monitor attached - perhaps checking the DVI port for damage would be worth it?

  • IMac won't wake from sleep mode after latest update

Hello, I have a Late 2013 27-inch iMac that has started acting strange, lately. After installing update 10.10.3, my iMac almost will regularly not wake once it enters sleep mode, after being idle for a certain period of time.
Is anyone else having this problem, and/or have any solutions for this?
    Thank you in advance!

    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. Please read the whole article carefully and don't skip any of the steps, including the ones under the heading Additional troubleshooting. If you don't understand any of the steps, ask for guidance.
Also note that if you replaced the internal hard drive with an SSD, or if you're starting up from an external SSD, then that device may be causing the problem. Check the SSD manufacturer's website for a firmware update. The only solution may be to reinstall the original drive or avoid sleep altogether.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
              Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
    Step 3
In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, uncheck the box marked
Put hard disks to sleep when possible
    Step 4
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
    Step 5
This and the next step must be taken as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ Diagnostic and Usage Messages
In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.)
You may see one or more lines like this:
    com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure
If you do see that, and you did everything in the preceeding steps, then you're dealing with an internal hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
    Step 6
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down.
You may see one or more reports with a name that begins with "Sleep Wake Failure" followed by a date. Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • TS3824 My iMac won't wake from sleep after installing the most recent OS update.

I'm having trouble with my iMac, the screen won't wake up after it goes to sleep. The one time it did the screen was all fuzzy and pink. This has only happened in the last few hours after installing the latest OS X Lion update. Is this normal? Can someone help?

    Hello, not normal.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Permissions.
    Re-install if that doesn't work.

  • IMac won't wake from sleep

New iMac 27 purchased Feb 2014. If the computer is allowed to go to sleep, it won't wake up. Neither taping the keyboard or mouse has any effect. Pressing the power button whether momentarily or holding it for up to 30 seconds brings it back. The power cord must be unplugged for at least 15 seconds, plugged back in and the power button pressed to bring it back.
Setting the computer to never sleep seems to be the only thing that resolves the problem.
Allowing the display to sleep is OK.
Manually choosing sleep from the Apple logo is OK.
Base model iMac 27 with just one option, the Apple 256GB SSD
Performed all the updates after first turning on the machine yesterday
Two external WD 4TB USB3 hard drives, one for data and the other for TimeMachine
    Canon Printer
    Canon Scanner

    Any ideas?

  • 10.8.5 iMac Won't wake from sleep/screen saver with require password set

I have several iMacs 2009/2010/2011 that are set to require a password when waking from sleep just this week all of them started freezing when this happened and will not start back up if restarted - they go pasgt the Apple Logo w Spinning gear to the Apple Log & Mouse icon - but don't make it to the login screen
The only way to get past it is to safe boot and delete the loginwindow.plists and loginitem.plists - and in one case go in in target mode and delete it
They are all up to date - the last updates I did were the 10.8.5 Supplemental Last week - and ARD Client 3.7.1 - Monday.
None of them have done again this since I deleted the plists
Has anyone else run into this? If so does anyone know if it is related to the updates or do I need to keep digging?
    Thanks
    Robbie G

I am having this problem still, even after updating with the latest combo. I find that my Macbook Pro (using 10.8.5) will show the beach ball spinning with a black screen. I have to restart the laptop in order to clear this problem. Very annoying since this can happen two or three times a day.
You mention 'plists'. What are they? And if you delete them, are they recreated automatically upon restart?

  • IMac won't wake from sleep mode

Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone has this issue.
Computer would only start after sleep mode if I unplugged the power cord. The power button would not do anything, even if I held it for a long time.
Shut down and start up would work normally. Only effected sleep mode.
After much trouble shooting I found that I had a bad USB hub. Everything on the bad USB hub would work fine so I didn't suspect it.

    Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

  • IMac won't boot if Firewire device is turned on/won't wake from sleep

I am sometimes having an issue where my iMac won't wake from sleep; after I restart the iMac wont reboot (grey screen) until I power off the LaCie 300GB Firewire drive. I just bought this iMac a couple of weeks ago but the Lacie was on a PPC G5 Tower before and always was OK. I have no other Firewire devices to test the port with so my resources are limited. Anyone heard of anything like this ?

I noticed there is a firmware updater for LaCie drives. I don't know if it applies to your product, but here it is
    http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10053
Please note what it says about backing up data on the drive before applying, just in case.

    Hi 02SilverSport,
Try using the power button to wake the iMac.

  • IMac 17inch G5 won't wake from sleep

Hi, my iMac G5 1.8ghz won't wake from sleep. It had been running poorly for a couple of weeks so I've re-installed Leopard however the underlining problem has not been fixed, which leads me to think it may be hardware? If i leave the iMac alone it enters into sleep mode successfully however nothing will wake it. I've tapped every key on the keyboard and nothing works. I then have to hold the power button in and re-start it. The only alternative I've found so far is to turn off sleep in system preferences.
    Thanks for any help

Have you reset the SMU and the PRAM? Try deleting the System Preferences .plist in User>Library>Preferences>com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Please post back with results,

  • IMac 6 won't wake from sleep

This is a 2nd hand question, as the computer does not belong to me, but I'm trying to assist a friend.
The iMac will not wake from sleep.  If the hard drive is set to never sleep, the system will come out of sleep.  But if the hard drive spins down and the system goes into standby mode, it can't be awakened.  Not by a short press of the power button, movement of the mouse, or click of the keyboard (wired or wireless).
The iMac was taken to an Apple store for diagnosis.  They used a 3rd party software tool (not the default OSX diagnostics) that showed no hardware issues per se, but it was noted that when putting the iMac to sleep and attempting to awaken it, the processor never gets a signal to do so.  They surmised that it may be a power supply issue or something to do with a component on the motherboard.  They re-installed the OSX completely fresh to rule out software as an issue.  But the next day, the owner found that the same problem persisted.
First, I'm curious to know if anyone has ever reported this problem with the iMac 6 and if there's a known culprit.  And naturally, if that culprit is easily fixed or if the motherboard would have to be replaced.
Second, since the problem does not happen with the hard drive staying "awake", would this problem be averted by installing an SSD?

Hello, what 3rd party Apps might be installed?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

    > during the entirety of this process the cursor was a "busy" pinwheel/beach ball/whathaveyou for a solid 30 minutes before I turned the computer off with the power button.
All that cursor means is that it is busy trying to do something.  You can see if force quitting solves the problem with a simple force quit using command-option-escape.  If you are having issues with iCal quitting, sometimes it doesn't always know whether or not it is properly communicating with a particular calendar.  This can be a Mobileme issue, or even a phone synchronization issue, or a network issue reaching a shared calendar.  Shutting down a machine directly from a cursor is the last step one should try, only after all others have failed.  If you have done this in the past, lurking corruption can get worse each time with the directory, and upgrading the system will only enhance any corruption already present.  When you restart your Mac, does everything appear to be normal?

  • Automatically wake from sleep when lid closed?

I would like my MBP to wake from sleep when the lid is closed (no external monitor attached) in the middle of the night to initiate a backup to another computer. Is it possible to get the computer to wake up with closed and nothing attached? Do I need a third-party app to do this?
    Thanks
    Brian

But, that won't wake the computer up if the lid is closed and nothing else is hooked up to it. I want to wake it up in the middle of the night when the lid is closed and it is hooked up to a power supply.

  • Compter won't wake from sleep mode

My Pavilion 17 notebook computer, purchased in Oct. '13, won't wake from sleep mode; I must shut down and reboot each time.  I know this is not due to Windows 8, as I have another Win 8 computer that works normally.

I've done some more experimentation and found a workaround. I had Sleep and the Screensaver both set to Never, and by activating the Screensaver the wake up issue has gone away. This doesn't change the fact that there is an issue with my ATV sleeping when it shouldn't and failing to wake up, but having the screensaver active stops it sleeping in the first place I guess.
It's slightly annoying because I like to have music playing with the description and album art running, and this disappears when the screensaver comes on, but it is better than unplugging the thing every time I use it. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update, because it only appeared in the last one.
