HT1338 Macbook air not powering up when pressing power on button, then after a few minutes it will power on.

My Macbook Air that I purchased in November of 2011 has just started to not power on as soon as I hit the power on button.
The Macbook Air will power on after a minute or so and works fine as of now.
This has happenned on two different occasions today.
Anyone have a reason why this would happen? Any solutions?
Thanks for your assistance,
Tommy

  • I have just upgraded to IOS 7 and for some reason iMessage and face time will not work. It asks me for my Apple ID username and password and when I enter then it tries to sign in and then after a few minutes comes up with cannot activate try connection ?

I have just upgraded my iPad to iOS 7 and now FaceTime and iMessage will not allow me to sign in. I enter my appl I'd and password but after a few minutes I get a message to say cannot activate try network connection then try again no matter how many times you do this it will not sign in. Any thoughts ?
    Thanks neil

try resetting your phone by turning it off and back on again. The servers may still be having a hard time keeping up, so you may just need to wait a little while and try again.

  • Hi, I accidentally spilled water on my Mac Air on the very right side of the keyboard. After a few minutes, the screen turned white and a gray folder with a question mark came up and kept flashing. THEN IT DIED HELP.

After the screen turned white and the folder popped up, it just kept flashing. After a few minutes the screen just turned white completely and I could hear the noise of the drive. It just sat there still with the noise for a good few hours until the battery died and then my mac just shut down completely. I tried to see if the computer could charge, and it does charge. I just can not turn the computer on no matter what. It is dead. It might be the logic board or the drive...I'm hoping it won't cost me a new computer because I just got this 5 months ago....

Do not attempt to charge as that will only make the damage worse.  You need to take the MacBook Air to an Apple store genius bar and have the technicians check and see what repair work is necessary.  It only takes a very small amount of liquid to cause short circuits and damage.

  • MacBook Air not powering up

I Have a mid2012 13" mb air. About 3 months ago it would simply not turn on. I plugged it in, nothing. I tried various key combinations Including the shift/alt power button which cause a led on the MagSafe to Turn off and on - nothing. We were really busy in the lead up to a move. I tried the mba intermittently- nothing.
yesterday I reali there were some files I want on there. I thought I'd try again. Pressed power button, nothing. Plugged it in and it started up! I logged in. Retrieved my files. Backed up to time machine. Upgraded to 10.10 Which included several restarts. I went to turn it off and the power button wouldn't register. I shutdown via the menu. When I went to turn on, nothing. What's wrong with my MBA? Is the power button the only thing not working ? Is there any way around that?

You should also ask this in the MacBook Air forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Macbook Air Immediately powers off when mini display to VGA cable plugged in.

I have a late 2010 MBA 11 inch. I am runnig OSX Snow Leopard, all software and firmware up to date as of 08/10/2011.
I am trying to use my mini display port to VGA cable to run an Optoma PK301 projector. Every time I plug in my mini display to VGA cable, the machine immediately powers off. No shutdown screen, no other warning signs, just instant black, as if the power was just immediately disconnected.
I have tried plugging in the cable while the projector is plugged in and with the projector unplugged. Either way the result is the same. I have been able to start the computer with the adapter plugged in and it will power on, however the projector will no pick up any signal from my MBA.
Anybody have any ideas on this? I have a genius bar appointment this afternoon. It is just frustrating because I am so used to everything "just working."
    Any help is appreciated.

  • My Macbook Air will start and then after a few minutes the HDD fills up with 29Gigs and I have to reboot!

when i run my macbook in safe mode it is perfect fuctionality and shows 29 gigs free space of the 120 total of the flash drive, however, when i start normal it works good for the first few minutes and then i get the startup disk is full error message and then it will momentarily lock up. I turned off the time machine which has been locking up since April 25th, and it will also act "glitchy" while it is working for the time until the storage is full pops up.
I have erased tons of stuff and have almost 30 gigs free, but then it just fills up - is this a virus?? HDD issue?? I have had no problems until recently with one time the computer locked up and it has gotten worse over time - i am open to suggestions - thank you

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

I recently downloaded facetime to my macbookpro 13" with OS X Version 10.6.8. The app works fine for a few minutes, then the sound disappears. I have to close and relaunch the app before it starts working for another few minutes then all over again. Is there a fix for this???

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

Try to "disable the hardware acceleration" in the Flash Player.

My MacBook air keeps freezing up when I'm on Safari or not, any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Blane756,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has steps for a different issue, a gray screen at startup, that I think would still be worth trying for your freezing issues:

Why my iPad 4 become very lag after upgrade to iOS 8.0.2 and not sensitive anymore when press the keyboard and programs it didn't respond when I type the word using the keyboard  fast it lag until I cannot locked or switch off the phone

Same issue here both with my iphone 5S as well as my iPad2. THe sync to my macbook air does not complete and it shows a large overcapacity level when connected, but once I disconnect there is plenty of room (4 GB) available, not a 20 GB overage.

  • My macbook air is running slow when playing movies

anyone! my macbook air is running low when playing movies and I also noticed when opening certain websites, any suggestions on how clean the computer or fix the issue!
    Thank you much

    Hi ana1773gar,
I understand your MacBook Air is not performing as expected. The following article provides troubleshooting steps which can help with performance issues:
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac runs slowly
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has easily available. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Memory. See the help that came with the app to see its system requirements.
To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click Memory, then click Memory Upgrade Instructions in the lower-left corner. documentation that came with the app to its system requirements.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Overview.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Displays. The name of the graphics card in your computer is displayed in the middle of the window.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, move files to another disk, then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If you have problems with your disk, use Disk Utility to verify and try and fix any issues.
Use Activity Monitor to see if a particular app or activity is making a large demand on your Mac.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • MacBook Air not turn on, after hard disk eject, without guarantee

Hello i have two macbook air not turning on,
after ejecting external hard disk, when macbook air is sleeping.
External hardisk ( 2.5 sata) have one ending of USB Type mini-B
and two endings of cable (one for data, other for power), of USB Type A
    After next sequence,
-insert one tail of usb cable into macbook air, the second usb cable into 5v adapter (like iPhone usb adapter)
-after some time macbook air going to sleep
-without waking macbook air, pull out the cable what connected into macbook air
MacBook Air will not turning on.
    even after this instructions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1367
In nearest AppleStore they say that there is a problem with logic part of notebook,
And the minimal price of repair will be cost half price of macbook air.
In other words, they say what they will not searching the problem of this,
they only will replace mother board.
Would you suggest other solutions ?
May be somebody else have this problem ?

OK. I wasn't quite sure. So, the first thing to try is Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM followed by Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). If neither can be effected then take it in for service as there has been a serious hardware failure.

  • Macbook Air Not Rebooting

I have a problem with my macbook air and I thought I would post it. It doesn't happen with my macbook pro or iMac or any other older macs in my home. When I go to shut down my macbook air, it closes all application including the finder and then just sits there. There's a circular object going round and round in the middle of the screen, but that's it. I have to physically turn off the Macbook air by pressing and holding the power button. This has happened at least 3 time to me since I got this computer and I wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing the same thing.

I've experienced this issue as well. After completing a sync with dot Mac, I disabled iDisk, autosync with dot Mac, and then deleted the MBA from my list of sync'd computers with dot Mac. That seemed to help for a while, but the problem resurfaced shortly there after. As an experiment, I completed the steps noted above, with the exception of deleting all synced computers from the dot Mac list. This has solved the problem on my end.

When playing WOW my MacBook air's fan comes on and stays on until shortly after I stop playing.  is this normal?  Never comes on at any other time.  Thanks.

Thank you, but I followed all instructions to reset the SMC and it has not helped. Looks like I'll have to take it in to Apple for repair.
