HT1338 Macbook Pro 10.7.4 won't shut down properly

I'm having issues when either I shut down or reboot. When it tries to shut down, the screen goes white with the pinwheel, but never turns off. I will leave my computer up, just to see if it ever shuts down, but never does. Can you please assist? 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

The progress bar IS what you get when doing a Safe Boot. So that is what the system is doing when you are trying to do a normal boot.
How old is your MBP? What year is it?
You have some type of hard drive problem, it would seem.
See if you can boot into the Recovery HD partition. At startup hold down the Command+r key and that should boot to the recovery HD system.
Open Disk Utility and Verify Disk and iof needed Repair Disk and then Verify Permissions and Repair Permissions.
That is IF the system boots to the Recovery HD.

  • Macbook Pro 10.6.8 won't shut down. Blue screen with spinning wheel.

it's an 15 inch macbook pro. since I bought this computer was working fine about last year. Somehow, start of this year, the problem begins. Everytime when i opened microsoft word 2011 on mac or Photoshop cs5, and quit the software as normaly. When i try to shut down the blue screen with spinning wheel apears. this spining wheel is endless. But funny thing is that after use other software such as games, web browser (safari) etc. and quit them. when i shut down there was not a problem. only word 2011 for mac and adobe photoshop cs5. Any solutions?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Macbook Pro 15inch i7 8gbram won't shut down (spinnig wheel, blue...)

    Hey!
Problem's stated in in the subject line...
Other question is, is it harmful for the computer to shut it down with the power button?
    grisu

If you shutdown the computer abnormally then you should boot from your installer disc and repair the hard drive to assure there are no problems resulting from the abnormal shutdown.
If the computer doesn't shutdown normally then usually there is a running process that will not quit as it should. Instead of shutting down first start quitting each open application. If one will not quit then that's what is preventing a normal shutdown. You can also boot into safe mode to see if you can shutdown normally from safe mode. If you can then there is a problem in your Home folder causing the problem (assuming that your open applications all quit normally.)

Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?
Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
    Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

MacBook Pro battery ran low and computer shut down , after charging battery I tried to start up and I got an Apple on a gray screen with spinning wheel that went to a panic call out screen and that's as far as it will go. I've tried start up with command keys ,a few got me to a different screen but nothing has let me into any place I can use to try and repair problem. Anybody have an idea of what's wrong with my laptop and a way to fix it ?

see if you can start up in safe mode.  What is safe mode?

    Yes, it is possible.
You had an issue in this individual instance.

  • My MacBook Pro will not allow me to shut down it says it is still importing photos into iPhoto it also will not quit

My MacBook Pro will not allow me to shut down my computer.  Their seems to be a glitch in the iPhotos.  It says it is still importing photos into iPhoto.  It will not allow me to quit either.

You could always hold down the power button to force the MacBook to turn off. This is usually a last resort step though, but if nothing else is working and you are sure it isn't importing photos then you might consider it.

  • After installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro and my MacMini can't shut down, only a grey screen and finish. Must be killed by the power button. Why?

After installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro and my MacMini can't shut down, only a grey screen and finish. Must be killed by the power button. Why?

same here...  sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't!!

  • My Mac Mini Won't Shut Down Properly

I recently upgraded to 10.6.2 after buying a mac wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Now I keep getting this problem where the OS won't shut down.
One of the symptoms is that when I move the mouse to the area at the top right of the screen with the clock, volume and wifi icons (is there a name for that?) I just get a spinning beach ball. The clock has stopped too! Also the volume controls from the keyboard don't work any more, even the remote control stops working. I can't shut down or sleep the computer, even 'about my mac' doesn't work.
Other applications seem to work OK and in Activity Monitor I don't see any unresponsive apps.
This hanging doesn't start straight away and two things that have set it off have been using the volume controls and when I tried to press ⌘-space to search for something.
I really don't know where to begin!

Still doing it! I disconnected all the USB peripherals and that was fine for a while, also removed stuff out of the task bar thing that I wasn't using.
Then re-connected the USB hub and it happened again... maybe it's something to do with that or just bad luck...

  • My MacBook Pro 15" won't shut down properly.

I am in search of help cause no one seems to know what the problem is. I have a late 2008 unibody 2.4ghz 15" MacBook pro. everything works smoothly and fine the computer runs superb, but when I go to shut it down I get a gray screen and a pinwheel thing and it just keeps spinning. Ive left it doing this for about 8 hours so I know it's not an issue with time. I can only get it to shut down when i hold the power button which I don't like doing. Everything else is in full working order any suggestions?

Sounds like you might need a SMC reset.
I would also try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • My Macbook Pro is being extremely slow and shutting down because of different errors, what can I do to fix this?

I need help!! My macbook pro is being extremly slow. When I try to open a program I get the colorful pin wheel but nothing is happening. It won't allow me to close the program. It is also shutting down saying that it had to restart due to an error, but I wont "show more" details. HELP!!

It sounds like your MBP is having kernel panics.  Log one and post it for inspection.

    Problem:
Over the last few months I've had constant problems with freezing, shut downs. This might be in the form of I'll be working in iMovie editing some video and then mouse down into the corner to switch Spaces, the screen will half zoom out then just hang. Mouse won't respond, everything just sits there. I usually have to fix this by holding down the power button until the MBP turns off, then just reboot.
Other times I'll leave the computer on at night, wake up in the morning and it will either be off and as such, I just have to press the power button and it boots up again. Or the screen will be off, metal above the Function keys will be cooking, but the computer isn't responding, just a blank screen. I hold down the power button until it turns off and then reboot again.
These problems were getting worse. It has gotten to the stage where it might freeze a couple of times a day.
Seems the problem only occurs when the MBP is working. I might leave it rendering at night and wake in the morning to find it off etc.
Will also sometimes get horizontial lines in apps. I shut them down and start them up again and it's fine. But it's like the graphics card is struggling big time.
    Actions to Fix:
    - Started with repairing the permissions, but I always found that it had lots of items to repair, would repair then, but then if I verified again, the same things would come up as needing to be repaired. I also tried booting from the OS X DVD and repairing from that version of Disk Utility, but same result.
    - Created new admin user account, to see if problem was just limited to my account. Same problem.
    - Ran AHT from the MBP DVD that came with the MBP and it passed the hardware test. Though I couldn't find anywhere to make it run an extended test. The test I could run would only take about 10 minutes I believe.
    - Erased the HD and fresh install of 10.6.3 from DVD, then software updates  to 10.6.7 (yesterday). Repaired permissions after each step. After the OS upgrade I got a decent list of items that needed to be repaired, and after repair, would still show as needing repair. I checked the KB and it listed a lot of files that might get this error, but that it was ok to ignore them.
    - Was editing video this morning in iMovie again, running Disk Utility on an external drive and boom, the MBP locked up again
I've gone through the /logs/crashlog in both the root and home user folders. After nearly all crashes these are empty, so it's not even reporting it anywhere.
Can anyone shed any light on whhat might be causing the problem?

Actually, when I was at the Apple Store I had both laptops flat, with the screens at 90 degrees. Pushing the screen forward and back with my fingers (via the top of the screen of course), the 15" easily has twice the hinge resistance. With that kind of test, weight isn't a significant factor -- that 17" hinge on a 15" laptop would probably cause the screen to come crashing down, too.
There were a few people in these forums who said their 17" was actually too tight (wish I had that problem!). It seems like a quality/consistency problem that could easily be fixed by A) measuring the force required to move the screen back and forth before screwing the case together, and B) making the hinge tension adjustable.

  • MACBOOK PRO (MAC OS 10.6.8) SHUTS DOWN UNEXPECTEDLY

As of recently I've had a very serious problem with my MacBook Pro when I've been using Final Cut Pro X. I'm using the computer normally while all of a sudden the screen goes dark and the computer seems to shut down completely. Eventhough I can still hear the disk spinning, the fans running and the keyboard is still lit I have to forcefully shut the computer down (holding the power button down for 10 secs.) and turn in back on. The first time it happened was a few days back and when I turned the machine back on it worked perfectly. Now however it shut down and I did the same things the same way I described before and within 30 minutes or less (while using Final Cut Pro X) it shut down in the same way I described above.
Could somebody please help me? Is my computer dying? Is it my Hard Drive collapsing? Or do I only havet to rest the System Management Controller (SMC) to fix this? Please I beg for your help for I am in dire straits, low on cash and desperately trying to finish some editing projects. Below I have copied the report the computer sends automatically to Apple along with the description of my computer.
Thankyou very much in advance. I appreciate all the help I can get.
    Thanks!

    Hi a,
It looks like you have a 15" mid 2010. You can try the SMC reset. If that doesn't work, see the free repair program for similar issues:

  • On start up, my MacBook Pro will just go dark and shut down. It clicks but does not chime. What's happening?

My MacBook Pro on start-up with just go dark and shut down. It makes a clicking or popping sound but there is no chime or other typical Mac sound. I can push the power button again and it will generally power up. It is becoming more frequent with time.
i recently had it in the Apple Store for repair... some cola was spilled on the keyboard.  They replaced the keyboard and through a series of circumstances replaced the logic board, case, and superdrive.
About a week or two afterward it started the odd start-up failure. At first only once every few days. Now almost daily. It concerns me.  I relay on this old Mac for work and even thought I use TimeMachine, it would be quite a hassle to have to replace it.
Anyone have any idea what's going on?

    Try these first:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    reset the SMC and NVRAM
