HT1338 my iPhoto program keeps freezing. what is happening?
Hello. I am trying to edit photos in iPhoto, but it continually freezes. Why? What can I do to fix the problem?

I just got the mid-priced macbook because my iBook g4 crashed 2 weeks ago. I transfered all of my files over and have not been having much luck with this little guy. I get no mooing or whine, and the CoreDuoTemp indicates that it runs at acceptable temps, but programs keep freezing on me. I've had to re-boot more than 5 times today. This is highly frustrating because I could let my G4 run for weeks without restarting it.
I've been working on a video project all week, and the programs that have been freezing are: Entourage, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, CoreDuoTemp, Sound Studio. Sometimes the programs freeze as soon as they are opened and sometimes it's in the middle of a task.
I did have Limewire installed, but I deleted it earlier today, still having problems.
Any ideas? This is so frustrating.I've verified and repaired disk permissions, I've run the hardware test, no problems detected. I also downloaded and did the memtest, everything passed. Programs are still closing, particularly strange is soundstudio, it is no longer freezing, it is now just closing and no error messages, or anyother types of messages appear in the console log.
Another oddity is that the "sound" icon in my system preferences looks like a light switch...it's boxed in, clearly not what it should look like. I only know it's the sound icon because when I click on it, the sound options come up. The icon has no label.
I'm just baffled. -

You can force quit any program on iOS by double tapping the home button. This should bring up a swipe-able panel of all of the apps currently running. Simply swipe up on any app you want to close.
As an aside, all of the apps on this panel are backgrounded to some extent (i.e. waiting for you to come back) and are using some system resources. On older devices you may want to keep an eye on how many are there because it can be a performance drain. I've personally had this issue. -
Mac keeps freezing; what steps to take?

I am using a Macbook Pro. With 10.5.8 OS.
Over the past few months my mac has gone through stages of freezing when online but eventually spreads to using anything on the Mac will create a freeze (iPlayer desktop, finder, PS, iTunes). I first started by uninstalling Chrome and using Safari instead. This worked for a few weeks. Then Safari stopped working. So I moved to Firefox. This worked for a few months. But low and behold Firefox started freezing the mac again. So now I am using Opera. But it is still freezing, not as bad as usual, but its only a matter of time before it is completely unusable.
When it freezes i get the beach ball but can usually move the cursor. The freeze starts randomly but especially when doing something 'difficult' like watching a video, or opening numerous tabs. Recently it even spread to BBC iPlayer desktop where I could not watch that offline or online as it would freeze the whole mac. It doesn't like iTunes either and wiped that library due to a crash corrupting files.
I have made numerous steps to counteract this such as Verifying and repairing disc permissions, downloading latest Flash (I can't download the absolute latest version as my mac OS doesn't support this). I have a feeling it might just be getting too old.
One last step I am contemplating is wiping it and restoring it to the factory settings. Would this help?

Programs keep on crashing at random times, what can I do to fix this problem, please help!

"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions. (Well, the Installer actually uses superuser Permissions to do it's work, but after reboot it doesn't guarantee communication with other existing needed files Permissions.)
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

My contacts program keeps freezing up
My iMac keeps freezing up. I have only had this problem after upgrading my operating system to snow leopard. It just keeps scanning and you cannot use the program the only thing I have been able to do is shut down the computer and I can only do that with the power button.

Mac mini keeps freezing - what should I do?:-(

My 3 months old mini started behaving very bad last several weeks...
It freezes, not responding to anything but the power button, sometimes it just reboots itself in the middle of work, and this all happens quite frequently since ~3-4 weeks ago (I bought the thing in September).
Called the support, they ran some diagnostics, and said my computer is perfectly fine...
Very frustrating...

You are certainly right that an 'archive and install' could result in a troublesome file remaining on the system and thus not be certain to resolve the problem. An erase and install was the appropriate choice.
When I spoke with them on the phone, they used Disk
Utility to repair permissions, and some other HW
diagnostics thingy (don't remember what was it, but I
needed to boot in some special way for it)
In the store they ran another diagnostics programm,
they booted from a special CD of theirs, which had
it.
The first is the stock first-line tool since many issues like this are caused by faulty permissions. The second sounds like the hardware test software, which is accessed by booting with the D key down and the original install disk in the drive. The third may have been the general-purpose diagnostics given to service providers.
I also tried the test program which comes with the
AppleCare, and it didn't find anything, but got stock
in the middle of testing, both when testing from the
computer itself and when booting from a separate CD
(it got stuck several times, each time at some other
stage).
I ran the complete disk scan, the directory
structures test, volume test, none of which revealed
any problem.
It's not clear from this which test it was that was getting stuck, and that may be an important point. Most such diagnostics relate to hard drive data integrity and structure, and reformatting the drive generally resolves most of the issues those tests may bring to light. If this was where the tests were sticking, it would be wise to monitor the hard drive for a week or two to make sure the problem doesn't recur.
I'm using Ximeta NDAS system, could it cause me

There is always some potential for MacOS updates to cause compatibility problems or break operability of third-party devices, drivers, systems or software, and more often than not when it happens it's very hard to pin down with any certainty. You might try contacting Ximeta support and checking whether there are known issues, and if nothing comes to light, then I think you can only make the assumption that in itself, there should not be a problem. -
Disk drive isn't working, Macbook keeps freezing, what's going on?
I've had my laptop for about 2 years now, it's a Mid 2010 model Macbook Pro. I didn't have any problems with it until about 3 months ago. It started freezing randomly, and would give me this box in the middle of the screen of random colors/pixels. There is no input from trackpad or mouse, but everything keeps running. The screen freezes, but skype calls continue, youtube videos keep playing the sound, spotify will keep running, etc. It will do this randomly. For about a week it would do it a couple times a day, but then it stopped for weeks. It now does it randomly. The only way to fix it is with a hard shut off.
I also noticed that my Disk drive is not working. It does not recognize disks- blank cd-r, Cds.... It only seems to play dvds... It makes the sound like the drive is starting up when I try to play a cd, then shuts down immediately. It does this three or four times, then ejects the disk.
Has anyone else had issues like this? What can I do about the freezing?

Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

Hi Newbie here.
i have a G4 sawtooth 20GB HD 512MB ram. It's running on Tiger and has latest version of iLife MS, adobe photoshop & office installed.
i bought th emachine 2nd hand & i believe the same OS and other apps discs have been used to add the apps to other machines.
i keep finding that apps shut down unexpextedly and then reopens, this is happens most with iphoto and safari. I've used the updater to download the latest updates but in some cases it will not let me install them, with the tiger & itunes updates it starts to install then comes back an gives a message of unable to verify copy of OSX and so cancels the update. Might i have aproblem with the copy of OSX being genuine? i have no install discs. i have run the disc permissions a couple of times which seems to help for i while.
Any suggestions on what to do, or do i have a dodgy software problem?

First, 512MB of RAM is probably insufficient to run Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is a memory hogging application. Second, if you can, open a Finder window. At the bottom of that window is displayed the free drive space. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free drive space. Not enough memory and less than necessary drive space will cause apps to crash. Also, you indicated you are running Tiger but which version? Click the Apple logo top left of your Desktop, then click About This Mac. Under where it says: Mac OS X is the version number. We need that information in order to help troubleshoot.
In most cases, a Software Updater will crash if there isn't sufficient room on the disk. Another way to check that information is using Disk Utility located in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch Disk Utility and then click MacintoshHD in the panel on the left. The info is displayed at the bottom on the right where it says: Available.

My Macbook Pro with Mavericks keeps freezing, What can I do?
I switched from PC a year and a half ago, so the computer is still pretty new. It's been freezing a lot lately, I have 4gb ram. It'll just suddenly freeze while running programs or stop working altogether, and a few minutes ago it said I had "run out of application memory" even though I didn't have any programs open. I get the spinny wheel of death a lot. I don't know much about mac so I was hoping someone might be able to help me out.

Program keeps freezing when trying to change library or restore ipod.
Having problems since updating like everyone else! Was missing files, etc.
I am trying to change the library location in preferences, but the program locks up when it is opening the window. Also freezing when I try to add a folder to the library.
I tried to restore my ipod on the summary page and same problem, opening window and it freezes. I have now reformatted my ipod and am trying to start fresh. Even reinstalled software, but no luck.
Help!Me too .. very frustrating, spent the last 3 hrs looking for solutions.
Also noticed Apple has suspended downloads of itunes 6 for the time being ... wondering if its a related bug.
