  • My computer shuts down when I put it to sleep

Ever since I used some of those auto-download upgrades my Mac shuts down when I put it to sleep. What's wrong?

Hi gazebo, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

You are right, but how could i send it to Apple? when the phone company first replaced my iphone they had in stock alots of iphones and they just sent mine back to Apple and gave me a new one, so all i did is to give them my phone, but now how could i sent it to Apple? and i cant send it by myself, and the store wont do that, its a lost for them.. so sending it to Apple wasnt an option from the begining.
and for the record, i dont think the store where i bought it is an authorized shop.. its just a store who boughts phone's from Apple in a low price and sells it in much more money..

  • Why is my Mac Air still hot when I put then in sleeping mode?

Hi,I wonder why is my Mac Air still hot when I put then in sleeping mode?

I just looked in my history - can't find the link. I was googling for about 15 minutes out of curiousity before.. just researched more though. I think its an integrated circuit (the IC part) that is a combination of both analog and digital die sensor readings:
"Many embedded systems need to read sensors that produce analog signals. Since processors are built to interpret and process digital data, i.e. 1s and 0s, they are not able to do anything with the analog signals that may be sent to it by a device. So the analog to digital converter is used to convert the incoming data into a form that the processor can recognize."
    Analog Die - Analog : 125
    CPU Die - Digital Core : 129
    x19 controller IC: 264
    125 + 129 = 254....close....
Thank you for asking! You spurred further investigation
And your computer temperatures look absolutely fine. I wouldn't worry at all.

  • When I put iMac to sleep it disconnects with Airport Express

I have an Apple Imac 2.1 and a G4 laptop, and have no problems with either of them connecting to the internet, but my 2.93 Intel Core 2 Duo IMac is another story.
Whenever I put it to sleep I have to go through the full deal to reconnect it to the internet, so as, what is your password, which network would you like to connect to, etc.
How do I stop it doing this and behave like the other two, cause it's behavior is really pxxxxng me off. Could someone out there please help me to stop it doing this. thanking you

The AirPort Express does not "sleep", it's always "on"...so you have an iMac issue...not an AirPort Express issue. You may be better served by posting in the iMac Forum.
If you have not already done so, open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and open Network. Click on AirPort on the left and then click Advanced at the lower right. Make sure that your network name is at the top of the connection list so that your iMac will connect to that network first. Drag it to the top if needed.
Delete any old networks displayed that you no longer need by clicking them to highlight them and then clicking the - (minus) button at the bottom of the connection list.
Make sure that there is a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined". No other boxes should be checked.
    Click OK, then click Apply
Restart your iMac and see if that helps. If no luck, you should post in the iMac Forum for further help.

  • Powerbook sometimes doesn't wake up when it goes to sleep.

About 3 months ago I replaced the internal hard drive in my Aluminum 15" Powerbook G4 1.67 GHz. The install and replace went fine, and I'm very happy to have a 250 GB drive now instead of the old 80 GB one.
However. . . Ever since then I've had an intermittent problem. It doesn't happen every time; just once in a while. I'd say once out of every 10 times that the powerbook goes to sleep, I can't wake it up again. The screen remains black, and no activity can be heard coming from inside the machine. I know it's still on, because peripherals I have plugged into it are still lit up (where they don't light up when the machine is shut down). In order to get my computer up and running again, I have to hold the reset button for longer than 10 seconds. . . let it go. . . then push the reset button quickly, as you would when turning the machine on after it had been shut down. Just pushing the reset button once does nothing; I have to hold down the button to do a hard shut off, then turn the machine on again.
About half the time this problem occurs, there is only silence and a black screen. But the other half of the time I hear a high-pitched, soft, mechanical buzzing or grinding sound coming from inside the machine just as soon as the screen goes black for the machine to go to sleep. To be honest, it sounds like it's coming from the right side of the machine, where the Superdrive is. . . but it has only happened since after I did the HDD replacement, so it seems more likely to be related to the hard disk. When the noise happens, I also have to do a hard reset in order to restore the machine and get it to boot up.
So far, there has been no loss of important data or functionality as a result of this. (I back up frequently with Time Machine.) But it certainly does not seem like a good thing. I have purchased diskwarrior for other reasons, and I will probably use it to make sure the hard drive is healthy. But I was wondering if anyone here had experienced this before? It's a bit of a pain, as I don't like to have to shut down the computer every time I want to move from my office to a conference room, but the scary noise makes me hesitant to close the laptop (hence putting it to sleep) when it is on.
    When the noise

dgalvan: A word of caution: always be sure to unmount or "eject" your USB drive before disconnecting the hub from the Powerbook or the drive from the hub. If the drive has been unmounted and disconnected from the hub, the hub can be disconnected from the Powerbook without any further ceremony.
Disconnecting the drive (or turning it off, if it has a power switch) while it's still mounted on the desktop will mess up its directory, or worse.
I don't know whether the hub by itself (without the drive connected) might be capable of causing your sleep-related problem, or whether the drive must be connected to the hub and the hub to the Powerbook for the problem to arise. Experiment and see.
And of course I also don't know whether or not you have any other peripherals that might be involved.

  • MacBook Doesn't Wake Up (when External FireWire Drives attached)

Anybody else notice their MacBook not waking up from sleep when Fire Wire drives are attached, specifically through the FW port or the Express Card port.
Granted, the MacBook wakes up 50% of the time in general with nothing attached...kind of a crap shoot.

Hi, I have a macbook air for some time now. It works fine, starts reasonable fast and with one exception I'm pleased with it.If I closed the LID or press the on-off button the system sleeps. When I open the lid the next day (8 -12 hrs later) the system doesn't wake up. The log file which I presume is send to Apple did lead to a patch. I saw on the support site various conversations in respect to this issue with various results.
I see that the problem of James even returned and was not reported to be resolved until now.
In my log I have the following messages, "Sleep failure" of last few days. What should I do to resolve this, or is Apple delivering a patch for this?

  • [SOLVED] Laptop doesn't suspend anymore when closing lid [GNOME 3]

    Hi there!
Since I upgraded to GNOME 3 recently, my laptop (Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG) doesn't suspend anymore when I close the lid. Instead, it just turns off the screen. If I choose suspend from the menu, it does suspend properly.
I googled a bit and found out that the option what to do on closing the lid was dropped in GNOME 3, setting suspend as default action. That's exactly what I want...
Also, I checked that option via gnome-tweak-tool and dconf-editor, and (surprise!) it was set to 'suspend'.
Anyone got an idea what to do to make it suspend again on closing the lid?

Sorry to bother you again, but for some reason it doesn't work anymore...
Somehow it can't lock the GNOME session, because when I enter the above line from /etc/acpi/handler.sh manually as root in TTY1, I get this error:
** Message: Failed to get session bus: Befehlszeile »dbus-launch --autolaunch=c9375f4ea0008d92177b28db000009ae --binary-syntax --close-stderr« brach mit von Null verschiedenem Beenden-Status 1 ab: No protocol specified\nAutolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n
If I enter this command inside GNOME, everything works just fine, it locks the screen and suspends.
    EDIT:
Setting the XAUTHORITY environment variable properly did the trick. Therefore, I borrowed some lines from here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … losing_lid

  • My iMac doesn't wake up when I hit the wireless keyboard

I leave my imac on all the time, I have a wireless bluetooth keyboard and sometimes when I hit the keyboard my imac doesn't wake up. Is this an issue that anyone else has delt with? Is it a keyboard issue or a computer issue?

  • Laptop doesn't wake after sleep mode after Windows 10 update

I usually lower the laptop lid when i want to put it into sleep mode; after the windows 10 update, this stopped working. I tried putting it into sleep mode from the start menue. This causes the screen to become black, but power to remain on ( I can see this from a steady light from the power button whereas sleep would have a flashing power button). The laptop's fan also increases in speed. When I try to wake the laptop, nothing happenes; I have tried to use ctrl+alt+delete, however this also does not work. I am ususally forced to resort to a manual shut down via holding the power button for a few second and restarting the laptop. I have tried updating the display adapters, restarted the laptop, and still no result. Does anyone know why this is happenning and how I can fix it?

I was having the Exact Same Issue. The reason I decided to go back to windows 8 was because since upgrading to Windows 10, when my computer goes into sleep mode, I cannot wake it up. I have to press and hold the power button to shut it done and restart. Even if I close my laptop, and reopen the lid, it wont start back up and I have to press and hold the power button and shut it down and restart.  After trying to restore my HP Envy Laptop from Windows 10 to Windows 8, it got stuck in a Repair PC Loop and I could not even access the desktop, I tried the restore option to an earlier date and that failed and all the repair options also failed. The last option I had was to do a full PC Refresh, and that one worked. It took about an hour but no data was lost, and only a few of my downloaded apps were removed. An html url was left on the desktop that showed a list of all the apps that were removed. So all I did was download those back and now im back up and running Windows 8.
