HT1338 my macbook keeps freezing

my macbook keeps freezing how do i fix this problem?

Boot from your installer dvd, recovery partition, or external bootable drive and run Disk Utility to repar/verify your drives (not repair permissions).
Do a smc and pram reset.
Boot in safe mode then reboot.
See if your machine still freezes after those operations are preformed.  If so run Apple Hardware Test to check your machine.
If AHT findes nothing then your software additions will need to be investigated.  But worry about that later.

  • My 2008 macbook keeps freezing and is working incredibly slow!

I've never had a problem with my macbook until recently.  It is working much slower than usual and keeps freezing.  The beach ball shows up almost constantly.  It's incredibly frusterating!
Does anyone know how to fix this??

How about revealing what computer you have and what operating system?

  • My MacBook keeps freezing during startup

I got my MacBook Pro in 2012. Currently, it keeps freezing while I try to turn it on. I get the apple logo and the spinning wheel, and eventually it freezes. I've tried starting in safe mode and it froze. I've tried recovery, it "restarts due to a problem during start up" and then freezes again. When it freezes, there are little green pixels on the screen as well.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

  • My macbook keeps freezing with the left side of the screen on the right and the right side of the screen on the left. Help

My 17-inch early 2011 macbook pro keeps freezing on me.  The freeze usually occurs when I'm importing or exporting pictures, when I stream anything, or If I am watching a dvd.  The left side of the screen shifts to the right and the right side of the screen shifts to the left.  lines also appear on my screen and I can not force quit any open application.  I have not dropped my laptop at all.
    Mac OSX Lion version 10.7.5
    2.2 Ghz Intel Core i7
I would like to avoid going to the an apple store to fix this problem if possible.  The closest one to me is 40 miles away.
    Help : )

If you don't have the Applecare extended warranty then you will need to pay for the fix. The fix is a New Logic Board. It seems as your Graphics card is failing in some way. No there is no software fix for this.
The Graphic chip is soldered to the logic board and the only way to change/fix it is to replace the complete logic board.

  • My MacBook keeps freezing for no reason!

So I bought a MacBook about 3 weeks ago and I was super excited and I love this thing, but it keeps freezing for no apparent reason! I will just be on the internet, or listening to music on iTunes or chatting, and it will freeze. I can't get any response from the keyboard or the mousepad and if music is playing, it sounds like the track is skipping. I have to force shut it down by holding the power button down everytime this happens. Sometimes it will happen after 30 minutes, sometimes not for 3 hours. I took it in 2 weeks ago for a hardware check and it came up clear and they told me it should be fine and might be my wireless internet connection. I have a NETGEAR wireless router. So, I turned off airport and did other things on the computer and it ran fine for over 3 hours without freezing. I was convinced it was my internet. BUT.... I had my friend come over and hook up to my internet connection and we both were on our macbooks (she has the exact same model as me) and mine froze and hers was completely fine the whole time! I was really angry and confused, so I brought my macbook back in again last friday. They told me there was an airport update, so I downloaded it and it seemed to be working. But that night, it froze once again. I was so frustrated and didn't know what else to do, so I did a complete system reinstall to clear out any programs that may have been causing the problem. I was so sure that this was going to work. And it seemed like it did. It's been working all week without freezing. Until tonight. I was sitting at my desk, reading my email, listening to music on iTunes, and chatting on iChat. I wanted to move my computer, so I unplugged from the wall, sat in a different chair and didn't plug back into the wall. It was fine for about 2 minutes in the new location, and then it froze once again. I honestly don't know what to do other than just bring it back and ask for a new one. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? Any other suggestions? I just want this to stop!!!

    Hi Stephen,
There seems to be alot of threads about this issue.
I just put 'freezes' into the search and loads came up.
It sounds like you've had a bad start with your new MB.
Does it get extra hot before it freezes?
There is a thread about the heat issue and freezing here...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4710316&#4710316
Have a read and see if any of your problems are similar.
If it persists much longer I would get in touch with Apple again and get it sorted.
    Hope this helps!

  • MacBook keeps freezing during Time Machine?

Hello! My computer keeps freezing up about 10 minutes into Time Machine. I have an internal 320gb drive and I am attempting to back it up to the Maxtor OneTouch4 Mini 250gb external hard drive I was using previously to back up my PowerBook G4. Also is it possible to keep my G4 files on there and use it to back up my MacBook?

    Strawbs7 wrote:
Thanks for the link to the safe mode start up info - I'll give that a go tonight.
Among other things, that will check the directory structure and fix it if possible.  That might be all you need.
I'm on 10.6.8 and my brother upgraded me so I guess he still has the discs, I will check. Is that for a reinstallation?
You need the main one to reinstall OSX (only; that doesn't disturb anything else), or to restore from TM backups.  You may not need to do either, but should always have the disc handy.
What did your Mac ship with, and do you have the original discs?  One of them has an Apple Hardware Test specific to your Mac.  It's not real extensive, but might find any hardware problems.
Only I'm not really wanting to do anything like that til I've backed up - bit of a catch 22!!
If you're sure the backups were completing until recently, eject and disconnect the drive until you need it. No sense risking any damage to them!
If you have or can borrow another external, you might be able to make a copy of the current contents of your HD on it, via the Restore tab in Disk Utility.  From your description it sounds doubtful, but might be worth a try.
And/or, if you have some CDs/DVDs or a USB Thumb drive, you might be able to copy some stuff to them.

  • Why does my Macbook keep freezing?

I have a mid-2012 13" non-retina display Macbook Pro that I got this year in September, and the past few days I've been experiencing issues with it. It keeps freezing and will not respond at all unless I hold in the power button. I bought it standard but I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB last month. It was able to run all the same programs at once even with 4GB. I did happen to drop it about 3ft a few days ago. It landed on the top right corner, where the power button is located and the casing did take some damage. The case is dented in a little where it landed, it somewhat dislocated the allignment of the screen with the body when it's closed, and a dent popped just below the power button but it still works perfectly fine. It is running Mavericks and I know some of my friends who have Mac experience some issues with Mavericks. And last night when it froze, I held in the power button to shut it down as it would not respond at all and when I turned it on and the Apple logo appeared, these huge, black bars appeared on my screen in random spots for abot 3 seconds and then went away. It never started up until I shut it down yet again and it started back up normally as if nothing happened. The RAM upgrade I bought wan't from Apple either. I got it from another company called Crucial Memory, and I did order a RAM upgrade for my last laptop from there before I got rid of it. And if I replaced the ATA drive in my Mac with an SSD, would it speed up?

If you bought it within 90 days, trained operators are standing by at Apple Support to receive your call, listen to your complaints, and make specific suggestions to address your concerns, and it is FREE, included with your purchase.

Use the Recovery partition to either reinstall over the top of the existing install or Wipe the drive and then reinstall clean.
You downloaded what is meant to go over the top of a previous OS X version or onto older hardware as a clean install. Could be the driver set included with that download does not have the correct driver set for NEW MBPs. As you do not need to BUY Lion for new MBPs and the only way you can buy lion is logging onto the App store from a MBP running Snow Leopard (and maybe Leopard, not sure about Leopard) and then paying for it. With new MBPs all you have to do is boot into the recovery partition and select Install Lion.
I would also suggest you make a Recovery HD boot USB thumb drive using the file from this link. But first you need the REAL Lion installed on your new MBP that was meant to go on that new MBP.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1433
You will need to make a new DVD or thumb drive of the new download for that new MBP.
    Good Luck.

Things That Can Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • My MacBook keeps freezing and crashing during startup and use, what's wrong?

My MacBook functioned perfectly for YEARS, and suddenly it started freezing during startup. One of four things happens: it starts up no problem, it freezes at the apple logo with the load wheel spinning, it freezes at a 'no' symbol (a circle with a line through it) with the load wheel spinning, or it freezes at a logo which is a folder with a question mark in it. It occasionally goes through and gets to the homepage, where I can use the computer for a certain amount of time before it freezes again. I never get to use it for more than 30 or 45 minutes at a time.
Yes, I have updated all my software, and I haven't dropped it or downloaded anything that could cause this issue. What could be going wrong? :(

There are corrupted system files involved, so my suggestion is to reinstall OS X.
If you are using Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you are using Leopard or Tiger:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Disk drive isn't working, Macbook keeps freezing, what's going on?

I've had my laptop for about 2 years now, it's a Mid 2010 model Macbook Pro. I didn't have any problems with it until about 3 months ago. It started freezing randomly, and would give me this box in the middle of the screen of random colors/pixels. There is no input from trackpad or mouse, but everything keeps running. The screen freezes, but skype calls continue, youtube videos keep playing the sound, spotify will keep running, etc. It will do this randomly. For about a week it would do it a couple times a day, but then it stopped for weeks. It now does it randomly. The only way to fix it is with a hard shut off.
I also noticed that my Disk drive is not working. It does not recognize disks- blank cd-r, Cds.... It only seems to play dvds... It makes the sound like the drive is starting up when I try to play a cd, then shuts down immediately. It does this three or four times, then ejects the disk.
Has anyone else had issues like this? What can I do about the freezing?
My macbook pro seems to be running hot when I'm on sites like tumblr that have a lot of pictures or gifs. It never did that before. What's going on?
