HT1338 My Macbook Pro is just shutting off by itself

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion but it was happening before that tool.

Hi Leslie198,
If you've just updated to OS X 10.8.2 does the MacBook Pro still shut off when you have it connected with the magsafe power adapter connected to the mains?
If you can get in to your mac, open About This Mac from the Apple Menu and select More Info, this should open some details up about your MacBook Pro, click on System Report and tell us what model you have it's next to Model Identifier.
Select Power from the options on the left and Copy & Paste the contents of this screen into a reply to this post, we should be able to see the health of your battery from this.

When my mac finally turns on the date/time is reset a windows pops up saying, "Your computer's clock is set to a date before January 1, 2008. This may cause some applications to behave erractically."

My MacBook Pro starts and shuts off after loading for sometime

Try starting in Safe mode by holding down the Shift key while booting. Safe mode takes a while to load the OS. After that, restart the computer normally.
If that does not work, start up in Recovery by holding down the Command and R keys. In the window that opens, choose Disk Utility at the bottom and verify and repair your disk. Repair permissions while you are there.

  • MacBook Pro (Early 2008) Shuts off using Battery Power

Just last night my computer just shut off using the battery power. It was charged at 84%. This morning I checked out what the problem could be. A few discussion boards said the battery could be the issue. These are the battery specs.
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: SMP-ASMB014-38c5-b97
    Manufacturer: SMP
    Device name: ASMB014
    Pack Lot Code: 0002
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 0110
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0102
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 3731
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 3731
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 114
    Condition: Check Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 350
    Voltage (mV): 12611
I bought this MacBook back in June of 2008 and have never had ANY problems. The health condition says to Check Battery and I've reset the SMC, PRAM, and NVRAM. When the computer runs on battery it last until about 80-84% of the battery life and just turns off. I press the power button and the gray screen appears and it clicks off again. I have to be plugged into the AC and I cannot calibrate my battery since it won't stay on past 80%.
The main reason I'm posting this board is to figure out if this is actually my battery but also that when I tried to call Apple I was asked to purchase an AppleCare plan. I just wanted to talk to someone to make sure it was my battery.
Thanks for your help in advance!

So maybe I'll let it run on battery till it dies... plug in the AC and let it turn on, unplug and see how much more it lasts and so on?

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2014 shut off randomly and won't turn back on.

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro(Mid 2014) won't turn back on. I was just typing up my essay and it just turned straight off and won't turn back on. It has happen several times before and all I had to do was press the buttons(SMC method) and the PVRAM thing and it would turn back on. But now it doesn't turn on at all. How do I fix this issue? I had went today to the Apple Store and had a appointment at 3:15-3:25 and I was late by 2 minutes, so they couldn't help me and offered me to come back at 5PM, but will busy so I asked for 5 Monday. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Back when it was operating it would shut off whenever I was using it at the random times. This is my first MacBook so I don't know if it's suppose to get Hot and loud sometimes when operating and then cool off afterwards if that helps out. It shutoff last week wednesday and doesn't turn on at all, but will charge to fully green though. Anyone got any suggestions? I do have a MacBook screwdriver to open it, so if anyone knows anything about the inside and how to resolve the issue it would be great. I don't know how to remove the battery so if you do know please tell me or some keyboard trick would be helpful!   All my data is on this so I would like to solve before Apple erases my data.

  • My Early 2011 Macbook Pro Continues to shut off at random

I own an early 2011 Macbook Pro, 4GB RAM, intel 3000 384mb graphics, 250gb SATA hd. I now have OS X 10.8.2 and my macbook randomly shuts off and its not just once or twice a day. It is more along the lines of over 20 times a day. Can somebody give me some advice to resolve this issue? I used mackeeper and ran every scan and I went to disk utility and repaired the drive. I don't know what else i could possibly do. This issue is making me wish i never bought this mac. The macbook is great and all but now i can't even use it because it shuts off at random. I can't enjoy the macbook if i have to use it in fear that it will shut off at any moment. Can someone please help me with this issue quickly?

If you have Apple Care or are still under warranty, give them a call and get a case number.  Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • Macbook Pro won't shut off

I have a Macbook Pro retina display and I am trying to shut down, restart, log out, but when I click on any of those options nothing happens. There are no error signs or spinning wheels, just nothing happens. I updated my software to OS X Yosemite hoping it would fix the problem but my laptop still win not turn off. Any suggestions?

Have you held the power key down for 10+ seconds?
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro 2007 Random shuts off

I start having issues with my Macbook pro it's randomly shuts off, sometimes in 5 minutes, 30 minutes , 3 hours or even before it will boot to the os.
It's getting really hot and fast without doing anything, any help??

My macbook started with the monitor going black but the light was still on. Now it will randomly shuts off and a light blue screen pops up saying my computer shut down due to a problem. Then reboots. This happens sometimes 5 times a day, sometimes none. I thought it had something to do with using video because it tended to happen when i was watching video. Now I just move my computer on my lap and there it went.
I took it to the genius bar - they ran tests, etc. and found nothing (after 5 days). The guy was extremely rude and not helpful at all. After my IT guy and myself went to the Apple store, they gave us a hard time saying they couldn't replicate the error. So after a few seconds, the man changed his mind and said he was going to change my logic board.
$600 later (luckily still under warranty) - my computer shut down again tonight.
Not a clue what the problem is. I had 90% battery life. I have noticed that recently I've been putting my copmuter to sleep before I close it.
    Anyway that could be it?

  • Why does my Macbook Pro keep randomly shutting off with or without the adapter?

I had this problem before that my 13-inch Macbook Pro would stop working without the plug, and then it started resetting its clock to 2000 every time i rebooted it until it eventually died altogether. I found out that my data cable was bad and got it replaced.
Now, it works completely fine except that it will randomly shut off without warning, even if it's plugged in.
I don't know if it means anything, but I'm currently using a Macbook Air adapter.
It's actually shut off while I was typing this post. Incredibly frustrating.

I think (let others bust my chops if I'm wrong) that the MBA uses a 60W MagSafe Power Adapter, whereas the MBP uses an 85W MagSafe Power Adapter. That could be causing problems.

  • Macbook Pro Core Duo shuts off intermittently

my 2006 macbook pro core duo with 2gb of ram shuts off intermittently.
here's what i've done to troubleshoot:
tried running the hardware support disc by holding down D. it starts to boot the disc and then the computer shuts off. it does this without fail right when the disc starts to boot. the screen flashes a few times and then kaput.
i've tried installing snow leopard. it turns off right around the 25% mark.
i've taken a very large house fan and pointed it directly at the exhaust vents of the computer. the computer stays MUCH cooler to the touch when doing this as i suspect(ed) the exhaust fans are broken. it doesn't help. the computer turns off when booting the hardware disc (at the same point) and while installing snow leopard.
i've taken the two 1gb dimms out and tried to install snow leopard utilizing each of them (1gb at a time) and it still dies.
any suggestions? if i can't get apples hardware testing tool to run and i can't install an OS, what are my options?

    what are my options?

  • Hibernate not working on my MacBook Pro - it just turns off

Ive had this machine for 2 years, and it has NEVER managed to hibernate.
The battery runs for about an hour, then at about 20% left it just shuts down the machine, losing all my work. I have looked everywhere for an option to change this, but cant find one.
Its driving me mad - I have lost so much work its not funny. Now I carry the power supply everywhere, and can never use the battery. I want my Dell back!
I am shocked to learn that some other people dosn't have this problem, when the machine powers off when the battery runs out, and they power it back on when recharging, they get the same state as before the machine shut itself down. WOW!
    I did this:
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    And got this:
    hibernatemode 3
    Which seems correct.
Also, I hardly ever suspend the machine by shutting the lid either - many times when I open the lid after, the screen is blank, but everything else is still working. no about of prodding will get the screen to work again, and I have to hold down the power button to reboot. I think the problem is if it gets woken up while the book is still closed it goes into headless mode, and there is no way to get out of it.
The macs sleep handling is much worse than XP, and that was pretty bad.
    Ideas?
    Simon.

    hobbss,
When I do the terminal thing (aka grep hibernate) I too get those results. Have you tried reseting the SMC. The System Management Controller is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is on the logic board of the computer. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.
Over time, the settings in the System Management Controller may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. Examples include not turning on, not waking from sleep, not charging the battery, or not recognizing the AC Adapter, among others.
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the computer's battery.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
    4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
    5. Press the power button to restart the computer

  • My Macbook Pro (2009) just turns off sometimes with no warning and for no visible meaning. it switches on again afterwards but is so annoying! Anyone able to shed some light?

    Hi all
I bought a second hand mac (boo i know but i am a student so cannot afford a new one!) it is a 2009 model, 15" with 8gb memory
It works fine until a point where it randomly switches itself off! I can be watching something, on photoshop, on iphoto or anything really and it just powers off.
I have found lots of threads saying the same except my mac switches itself back on automatically afterwards.
I have had the fans and filters cleaned and checked. It does not overheat (i have a cooling thing it rests on) and i dont have it working for hours on end before it does this, sometimes it will only be within 1o minutes of me turning it on!!!
    Please help!
is anyone able to shed some light?
Also, i hope this problem is solvable personally because i dont have any warranty!
    Thanks

  • Macbook pro 13" 2012 shut off randomly and won't turn on

The only applications that were open were safari (I was watching hulu) and iTunes. The laptop randomly shut off without any warning. It was in the charger and was around 60-70% power. After it shut down the light that was on the charger turned to a faint orange blinking light and now is a faint green blinking light. This is the first time this has happened. I can't get the power to come back on. Need help asap!

  • MacBook Pro is randomly shutting off.

When it restarts the date and time reset to something like January 1, 2000 before changing back to the correct date and time several minutes later. Two months ago I had a problem with overheating with my Macbook that the Apple Store took care of. Any help?

First, reset your SMC. If that doesn't help, then your battery may be due for a replacement. One failure mode of lithium batteries is when they start dropping from, typically, 50% or less capacity to zero, snap your fingers quick, shutting the system down.
See this Apple note to determine how many cycles are on your battery and what Apple considers the maximum battery cycle count for your system.
For a replacement battery I would look at what OWC offers. I've used their batteries in other systems, which have worked well.
