HT1338 my mini mac always freezing up do i have a virus

why is my mac mini is freezing up so often

It's not a virus (see my Mac Malware Guide), but without more information about what is going on, it's hard to offer any useful suggestions.  Try some of the troubleshooting suggestions in the "Solving the problems" section of Understanding upgrade nightmares.

I hope someone can help me!
I have a mini mac and just recently everytime I turn the computer on in the morning I will login and then I go to open a program and then it just freezes! So i have to pull the power cord out in order for the computer to shut down. When I turn it on again I login again and maybe it will work but it takes one/two turns before it will work properly. Can anyone suggest anything? I have done a disk utility on it and it says everything is fine????
    Please help

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
I would run the Apple hardware test. Insert your OS X DVD that came with your system, reboot holding the option key down, choose Apple hardware test when prompted, and follow directions.
    Did it tell you anything?
PS. It would be useful if you indicated whether you have a G4 or Intel mini, and what version of the operating system you're running.

  • Is there an anti virus program for mac 9.1? Think I have a virus

I don't use an anti virus - using outlook express I got a strange message with no subject or sender - just a blank line. I tried deleting it but it wouldn't be deleted. Since then every time I try to delete it - it crashes the system. Same with Internet Explorer. And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
I tried looking for an antivirus but all of them seem to be for 9.2 or higher and I don't know what to do - if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files - new to this from the PC world. Thanks

    Hi, debbieM -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
It is doubtful that you have a virus - no virus which can harm OS 9 has been released in well over 10 years.
Getting a message every now and then with no subject and no body is not unusual. There are a couple of ways to get rid of a message without opening it.
Click on an adjacent message which is okay to delete, then hold down the Shift key and select the blank messages - none of them will open. Once you have selected all the ones for deletion, press the Delete key.
Or, click and hold on a message; or press the Control key and click and hold on a message. A contextual menu should appear; one of the choices in that menu shuld be to delete the messge. If you choose that, it should happen without the message ever opening.
Things you can do to make Outlook Express run smoother -
    • Increase the Preferred memory allocation for it. Adding 20 or 30 thousand to the original Preferred amount, or even more if you have sufficient RAM, is not excessive.
Article #18278 - Assigning More Memory to an Application
    • Compact the databases. To do that - with OE not running, hold down the Option key and start up OE. A splash screen will open, asking if you want to compact the database files - click okay, and follow the prompts.
For Internet Explorer, increase its Preferred memory, a lot. Adding 30 to 50 thousand is not excessive.
And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
That could indicate one or more other problems.
    • How full is your hard drive? It is good practice to not allow your hard drive to get more than 85% full. When it does get more full than that, odd behaviors including an unstable OS begin occuring.
    • Try rebuilding the desktop file (note that the desktop file has very little to do with the desktop). To rebuild the desktop safely, restart - immediately hold down the Shift key until you get the "Extensions Off" message; then release Shift and hold down the Command and Option keys until you get the splash screen asking if you want to rebuild the desktop; click yes (or okay). Once that's done, restart to turn your extensions back on.
    • Boot to your most recent OS 9 Install CD, one valid for that machine - ideally it would be OS 9.1, the same as is on the machine. Once booted to the CD, run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder on the CD. Let DFA have a look at your hard drive, and allw it to repair what it can - it may take more than one pass to do this, especially if the drive is rather full.
If DFA finds things it just can't fix, post back with the description of the problems found.
if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files....
Updating the OS from OS 9.1 to OS 9.2.1 should not cause any loss of files.
However, in general updating an OS is not a fix for a damaged or unstable OS. It is better to get the OS now on the drive healthy before updating it.
When the machine goes unstable (icons begin disappearing, etc.) are there any error messages?

  • HT1338 I bought mini Mac online and I do not have password how do I reset because I want to update but can't without password

Your Apple Store password should be the same as your forum password.  If it isn't, try to get that info by calling the store for your country.

  • Since I upgraded to mountain lion my mini mac keeps freezing up any ideas on how to fix it?

    HELP Please!!!

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
    Works fine here.

  • Is my mac being hacked or does it have a virus...?

My macbook pro is zooming in on safari, highlighting words and looking them up in the mac dictionary, and going to the launchpad by itself. The trackpad stops and skips around when I try using it or it will move somewhere else when I try to click on something, and it moves around by itself. Is there a virus? It all started today and has never acted like this before. Sometimes, the screen will even hide open windows and even my doc. How can I stop this/get this creep out of my system? I just downloaded Norton security, will this help at all? It just finished scanning and said it did not find any viruses..

Remove the useless Norton/Symantec product by following the instructions on either of these pages:
Uninstalling your Norton product for Mac
    Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh
If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. Back up all data before making any changes.
There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Reset the System Management Controller.
    3. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    4. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason.
    5. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    6. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    7. If none of the above applies, or if you have good reason to think your computer is being controlled remotely, disconnect it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB network device, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop immediately, you should suspect an intrusion.

  • Ipod touch always freezes.

I got the ipod touch for christmas and I really enjoyed it at first. But I always have one problem with it, it always freezes. And I have done everything to fix it and it keeps freezing. And I can't return it to bestbuy because my parents got it back in October so it wouldn't sell out, and bestbuy won't return it. Apple owe's me a new ipod touch. I'm not getting the one I have repaired because I sen't in my ipod mini to get repaired and it had scratches all over it, and I'm not taking the risk. I want a refund, or a new ipod. You guys have to give me one of the choices or I can press charges.

I see your post is as juvenile as your forum name.
    Nice.

  • Mini Mac 10.4.11 to Mini Mac Server Snow Leopard

Im interesting in getting a 2010 mini mac with server.
    BUT I have a mini mac 10.4.11 with photoshop, lightroom,etc. (Actions,history, etc)
I know that I can't transfer from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard, Do I HAVE TO upgrade the Snow Leopard onto my OLD Mini Mac 10.4.11 and then get Firewire Cable to trasfer my Applications such as Photoshop and Lightroom over no problem?
It would be a pain in the a** to do all over again with those install adobe, etc!
Hope theres something to make my life abit easy!
    Cheers!

No, you do not have to upgrade the older Mac mini to Snow Leopard in order to migrate your stuff to the new mini. However, Adobe products are some of the hardest to migrate because they have files spread all over the place and sometimes they do not all get migrated. Many folks find that everything works better with a fresh install on the new computer with 3rd party applications, like Adobe.
Your older Mac mini may have FireWire 400 and the new Mac mini has FW800, so you will need the proper cable, FW400 to FW800 to connect the two minis with FW. But you can also migrate over a wireless connection or an Ethernet connect as well. The latter two are just slower than FW.

  • Lost Cause?  Mini Mac + Sony Handycam???

    Hello -
Im new to the Mac world. I just got a Mini Mac for x-mas, and I have a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD403. It seems that they arent compatible. The camcorder takes movies and pictures, which I was hoping to be able to use with my Mini. It does have a USB port, but nothing seems to happen when I try to connect.... I was thinking the first step would be to get a firewire adapter to see...Im at a loss, is there no way to make the two work... The mini dvd that goes in the camcorder, of course doesnt work with the Mac MINI....
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
iMovie, like all DV editing programs (including Final Cut Express and even Final Cut Pro), require you to use FireWire to connect. This is part of the "DV" standard. You can't connect a DV camera via USB because then it wouldn't actually be "DV". I looked around for a couple of minutes, you'd think "what ports does the DCR-DVD403 have?" would be an easy question to answer. But although Amazon.com offers an "iLink" (Sony's name for FireWire) 4-pin to 6-pin cable as an accessory, I couldn't find anywhere that said that camcorder actually HAD an iLink port. If it does, you may be able to use a 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable. However, cnet.com's review said this camcorder simply wasn't compatible at all with a Mac.
Does it mount like a hard drive when you connect it with USB? If not, then it doesn't support the USB Mass Storage standard. So, you won't be able to see it with iPhoto to download the still pictures either.

  • When installing Windows 7 on my mac through bootcamp, it always freezes at "Completing Installation"

When I try to install windows 7 on my mac, it always freezes at "Completing Installation".  Does anyone know a fix for this?

    Got it!
After posting my question I noticed the "More like this" category and the second discussion was a hit.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11290644#11290644
It was a display driver. All I needed to do was to boot from the CD again and following the directions in the post.
    Worked like a charm.

  • Mac Mini Experiencing Hard Freeze 3-4 Times Per day...

About 10 days ago, my mid-2011 Mac Mini started experiencing a hard freeze wherein I would get the spinning beachball and slowly each open app would be come unresponsive and my only resort was to hold down the power button to restart.  Upon reboot, the system would work fine for about an hour then the freeze would start again.  I've rolled back my configuration to a state prior to the freezing, and in desperation, have done a completely clean re-install of the OS.
    System specs:
    Mid-2011 Mac Mini 2.7 GHz Core i7
    16 GB RAM
    256GB SSD
    750GB HDD
Attached to a 27" LED Cinema Display, and an Airport Extreme Basestation/TimeCapsule (TimeMachine temporarily disabled)
I've been reading the logs, but don't really know how to interpret them so I've included a a number of postings right up until I force the reboot.
    Thanks in advance!
