HT1338 my preview app doesn't open

Since today, I can't open any pdf file (using Apple Preview app), nor can I open Preview.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library", then go to Containers folder and com.apple.Preview and delete container plist. Now relaunch Preview and test.
EDIT: Oops, 10.7... it may be in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist. I'm not running 10.7 right now.

Since Maverick installation, I can't open my pictures in Preview. The Preview application doesn't open anymore. Neither does the App Store, nor the 'software update'
    Any idea what to do?

  • Preview app fails to open any file, console log shows errors messages

    Hi,
I backed up my old mac using TimeMachine and restored the TimeMachine image to my newly purchased iMac running 10.9.4.  There were no errors during restoration, however when I try to open a file with the Preview app (such as a jpeg file), Preview app doesn't open the file and emits a variety of errors to the console log as below.
Is there a way to clear the state of the Preview app so I can fix this issue and use the Preview app to open images again?  These image files open fine in Chrome, but I can't seem to use Preview to open any files.
Not sure if this is a bug with system restore or a bug in the new OS.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi,
I tried both suggestions, but they didn't resolve the issue.   Thank you both for trying to help.
The font tool was crashing when I tried to validate my font files.  I looked and I didn't see the font in question listed in that tool.  Crash stack is below.
I reinstalled the OS per Linc's instructions, but Preview still is crashing when opening a jpeg file.  Crash stack is below.
Weirdly, most everything else seems to work okay: mail, safari, chrome, etc, all seem to function with no issue.  The font tool isn't something I care about, but Preview app is something I use to review my pictures, etc.
Any other suggestions?  Is there a good alternative app I should use in the meantime to replace Preview while I get to the bottom of the problem and resolve it?
    Thanks,
    Norm

  • Preview app will only open 20 images

    Hi.
For me, the Preview app will only open 20 separate images at once. When I open the 21st image, it opens in the 'drawer' of the 20th image, as do subsequent images I open.
This is not the behaviour I want. I want to be able to open any number of images and have them exist within their own window. Preview in 10.1 I believe allowed this!
    I am running 10.4.10 with Preview 3.0.9 (409).
    Any and all help appreciated!!
    - JD

    John,
I was able to duplicate your problem. I messed with different sized pictures thinking it might be a memory problem, it was not. Also tried different preference settings, no luck. My conclusion is that 20 pictures is a limit imposed by the programers.

  • Why does Preview app .fail to open ?

When trying to open up an image using preview, I keep getting a message  ' The application "Preview app" is not open any more '.Consequently any image I try to open fails- The only way I have found to temporarily restore the application is to shut down & restart the computer ( not very efficient !!) but the problem reoccurs.
I have reset the PRAM and also reinstalled my OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite to try to get over this but to no avail..
Any suggestions would be most welcome

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to launch Preview. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • 10.4.6 Preview.app, will not open

just installed Tiger, now the preview app will not open. Tried many things, new user, disk utility. I don't have much faith in erase and install, and I don't want to loose all my old app's that I don't have installers for. Anyone resolve this issue?
    Thanks-
    macbookpro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Well - you could try re-installing it
    Download Pacifist
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
Open it and then put your 10.4 disc in the drive - select 'Open Mac OS X Install Packages' [wait a bit] - then 'Find' "Preview.app" - select the top one from the list in the panel that pops out and then click 'Install' at the top left and it will hopefully install it in the right place.
You could then re-install the 10.4.6 combo

  • I get a messaged -1712 saying preview.app cannot be opened

When I try to view a pdf document, I get a message saying "preview.app" cannot be opened -1712

If you haven't already done so, restart and try again. If an application won't quit and prevents restarting, force quit. As a last resort, force a shutdown by holding down the power button for a few seconds. Then press it again briefly to start up.

  • Preview app won't open pdf

Preview app won't open some PDFs.  A screen opens that says "Please Wait...  If this message isn't replaced with the original content of the file, your PDF viewer may be uncompatable"

Have you gotten those to open yet? If so, how?

  • Preview app doesn't display hyperlinks

PDFs when opened in Apple's Preview App do not work with hyperlinks (including mailto:s). We've tried with various work flows from both windows apps, Apple's 'print pdf', Acrobat Pro. Other apps work fine: e.g. Adobe Reader, Safari.
I'm surprised not to see more discussion about this, is it a well known issue?
    CM

Hyperlinks in PDFs that I create in Adobe InDesign work fine in Preview, assuming they were actually created as hyperlinks (versus text strings even with link-like formatting).
Some other apps try harder to interpret text strings as hyperlinks than Preview does.

  • TS1702 When I try to open the Camera app or the photo booth, half of the times, the app doesn't open entirely, it shows me the initial image of a closed screen, and it never opens. My ipad is new, I bought it a week ago. Whan can be happening? Thanks!

Quit the camera app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesnt help, try this. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Email app doesn't open catch-all folder at start-up

    Hi,
I'm happy the email app got redesigned and a new catch-all folder has been introduced. I wonder though why it doesn't open this folder by default. Instead it jumps right to the folder underneath which is a folder linked to 1 of the 4 email accounts I'm checking with Iphone. It's not even the default email account....
    Regards
    Stephan

Okay, had to "Reboot" my phone. Hope it doesn't recur. Wait, this is Apple not Microsoft.
Actually I could connect to the App store either, so not a Gmail problem. But I COULD text okay. Strange.

Did you do a restart or a reset?
Do a reset (Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons about 10 secs or more till Apple logo appears)
If that didn't help, you have to write to/wait for the developer to update the software.

  • Appleworks 6 app doesn't open

I have an ibook G4 and everything was fine until a couple days ago my appleworks 6 app wouldn't open so I downloaded apple works repair and fixed the docs that I had to use and it was okay. Today my appleworks 6 app won't open and the error message says it is "damaged or incomplete" and same with all of my works docs same error message comes up. the apple repair utlity doesn't work to fix any of the docs or the app itself. I put the apple disk 1 in and it does not have appleworks app on it to reinstall. What should I do

By "I tried that," I assume you mean that you reinstalled AppleWorks from the install disk.
After any install, there are some housekeeping tasks that should be done. For the System, you should Repair Permissions using the Disk Utility application found in Applications > Utilities.
For AppleWorks, you should delete the existing preference files, using Peggy's User Tips post AppleWorks has stopped working correctly as your guide.
A search of the AppleWorks forum shows this topic came up about a year ago. Although the original poster has not marked the question as "Answered," you may find additional useful information there.
In your initial post you said, "I downloaded apple works repair and fixed the docs that I had to use." I know of only one available download fitting that description—AppleWorks File Repair Utility—an application written to solve a specific issue:
This utility is designed to fix AppleWorks documents that have become damaged when the documents are saved from AppleWorks 6 running on a Mac OS X 10.2.x client to an AppleShare or compatible file server.
Unless you are saving the AppleWorks files directly to a separate computer which is acting as a file server, this utility should have no effect. Also the specific issue applies only to Macs running OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar).
Three other investigations that may provide useful information in tracking down the issue:
Can you launch AppleWorks by double clicking its icon at Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks 6?
Can AppleWorks be launched from a different User account? (If you have only a single user account on your machine, create a second one using Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts, then try to launch AppleWorks from that account.)
If AppleWorks can be launched by either of the methods above, can you then a) create a new document, b) add text to the new document, c) save and close the new document, d) open the new document using File > Open from within AppleWorks, e) open the new document by double-clicking it's icon?
    Regards,
    Barry

  • I have just upgraded to OSX Mavericks and I have an annoying issue, this happened after I used clean mymac app and do some routine scanning. After it was done, I have noticed that Preview app doesn't work anymore, it just keeps crashing up until now

Anyone having issues of Preview.app crashing in OSX Mavericks?

No but CleanMyMac ca cause destructive issues to your system. I would recommend uninstalling it completely as per the Developers instructions, and if Preview still is not working, then chances are good that CleanMyMac has corrupted it and you may need to reinstall Mavericks (after backing up your system)
