HT1338 My Time Capsule isn't backing up.

My Time Capsule isn't backing up. It appears to be plugged in, etc. - but the "green light" isn't on (orange light isn't either) and therefore it's not backing up. Any suggestions on what I can try to get it backing up again?

Have you received any error messages?  If so, what do they say?

My Time Capsule isn't backing up and has shown an error code 4568. can anyone explain what I have done? and how to get it working again?

You need to first of all do a reboot of the TC.
Make sure the disk in not running in the TC.. just put your hand on it.. it will have some vibration with hdd spinning..
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord.. count to 10.. plug in power cord.
Maybe a whole network restart is worth it.. if it has not been done in a while.. start everything up again in correct order.. modem.. TC.. clients with 2min gap.
Then do a verify of the TC.

  • Installed Snow Leopard now my Time Capsule isn't functioning.... HELP

Good news- my lovely wife bought me Snow Leopard for my birthday last week.
Bad news- since I've installed it my Time Capsule isn't backing-up....
I've tried two overnight, yes overnight, attempts at backing-up, plus countless other aborted attempts. Time Machine, manages to 'calculate changes' and on one of the occasions even started to back-up but managed only 470MB before failing to register any change for the next 7 hours....!
    This is driving me nuts!
I've been into my local Apple re-seller (I wish I was in the States) and suggestions have been:
    1. Change the computers name.... the idea being it'll see it as a whole new back-up. Hasn't worked.
    2. Erase all my back-up to date and start again..... Really, what and risk losing everything.
Can someone out there help me..... please.
    Merry Christmas.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
It's probably something simple, but you need to know why the backups are failing.
Start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.
If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup, what you've done, and the results.

My Time Machine isn't backing up to my Time capsule.
I am using OS X 10.8.2 which I believe is the latest version.

I have an Apple Time Capsule which backs up by wireless. For the last 3 days it has not backed up. I get this message:
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
I have gone into Mac Help and followed this down to stage 4:
under shared it lists my time capsule and my husband's iMac - both use the time machine but we have switched his off temporarily.  Clicking on my Time capsule I get "Connected" and "Sharepoint" - I didn't have to enter connect or password
I don't understand stage 5: how and where do I select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups ?  How do I know which it is? My disk utility lists 160.04 TOSHIBA MK... with sub-heading Macintosh HD.  It also lists (with a "CD" icon) HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS22N
Under stage 6, how and where do I Locate your backup ? I try dragging my Time capsule from Finder to the Disk Utility side panel but it won't go.  What is my computer's name?
Please someone help!  I'm completely stumped.
    Thanks,

    Mac Help says:
If you back up to a Time Capsule or network disk:
Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and slide the switch to Off.
    Open Time Machine preferences
Open Disk Utility, which is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
    Open Disk Utility
Make sure the Time Capsule or network disk is turned on and available.
Open a Finder window, select your Time Capsule or network disk in the Shared section of the sidebar, and click Connect. If necessary, enter your user name and password.
On the Time Capsule or network disk, select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups. Depending on how your Time Capsule is set up, there may be one or more disks or volumes.
Locate your backup, and drag it to the Disk Utility sidebar. You can identify your backup by looking for your computer’s name in the backup’s filename.

  • Time Capsule--can I back up Two different Laptops on the Time Capsule?

It's just about that easy. I just got the Time Capsule. I backed up my MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to use the same Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook. Can this be done? If so, how? I keep getting the failed message from the Time Machine Backup.
    Thanks for the help.
    Dave

No question that it can be done. I just got a new MacBook a couple of weeks ago and I am backing it up to our TC alongside my son who has been using it since last Sept. with his MacBook. There was no problem setting it up. I just clicked on TimeMachine in the Dock and it asked me where I wanted to back my files up to. The only choice was the existing Time Capsule. I clicked and away it went. I took the advice of others and connected my Mac directly to the TC for the initial backup instead of relying on the wireless. It only took a couple of hours.
What specific error do you get?

  • How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and Power Book

How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and MacBookPro

It is generally better to leave the old backups and start again.. unless there is something you particularly need.
But if you desperately want all the old backups you have to copy the sparse bundles.. this will take very long time as it must copy via the computer..

Take particular note of the initial comments.. ie before you read how to do it.. don't do it.

  • How do I set up my new Time Capsule just to back up not as a wireless?

Can anyone tell me how to use my new Time Capsule just for back up not as a wireless router?
I have an ATT Uverse for my wireless service and have not been able to get the two to work together.
I just want to plug my Time capsule in and connect it to my MacBook Pro with an ethernet an click backup.
So far my computer doesn't reconnect the Time Capsule.
    Thank you for your help

You will need to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to join the wireless network provided by the ATT Uverse router, as follows:
Either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the TC, and then, using the AirPort Utility, change this setting:
AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Wireless tab > Wireless Network Name: <select the ATT Uverse network>
This configuration will allow your Mac to connect by wireless to the ATT Uverse router and perform Time Machine backups wirelessly.
If you want to only do this backups by wire, then you will need to connect the TC directly to the ATT Uverse router by Ethernet, and then, reconfigure the TC as a bridge. You can then connect the Mac to the TC by Ethernet as well for backups.

  • I am using an Macbook pro in conjunction with a Time Capsule. I back up all my aperture librarys on it, but how can i view these images that are stored on the capsule please ??

If you want to see what is in a file that is backed up by time machine then you have to restore the entire file. Having said that I have had good experience with Time Machine and individual files... if the file is there then all of it's components are almost for sure there. A way to get around this in Aperture would be to use referenced images. The images then still exist as individual files and can be backed up and restored individually. You would have to do so on a file by file basis though and your album information would still only be saved within the Aperture library.

  • Time capsule no longer backing up after 10.6 upgrade

After upgrading to OSX10.6 my time machine (through time capsule) is not backing up anymore. I can connect to the disk through finder and also through the time machine application. I can also see my backups from 10.5 and there are no issues with the wireless or router.
During attempted hourly backup the error message is:
The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Latest successful backup: 27/09/2009 at 15:29
it seems that i am not alone in this post OSX10.6 problem but have not found any solution yet - anyone help?

Just thought i would update after finally resolving this.
Tried many things after trawling the internet, eventually including reformat.
Established it was an error 11 via 'TM error log' and final solution was to change the names of one of my hard drives which had a '-' and a '/' in it.
These names had not caused any problems for 6 months under 10.5 but seem to be the issue under 10.6......
Time Machine has done a full backup and regular hourly ones for the last 2 days
still having a couple of spurious issues with 10.6, cannot force a shutdown from my account if my wife is logged in - i have to log her account out before i can shut down.

  • HT1178 I bought Time Capsule specifically to back up my computer at work. Only my computer. I completed the steps the best of my knowledge but I got the message, "This device & its network services will be temporarily unavailable. Are you sure you want to

I bought Time Capsule specifically to back up my computer at work. Only my computer. There are many computers within my department. I completed the steps the best of my knowledge but was unsure of which option to click. I clicked "I want to create a new wireless network". At the onset the instructions said I needed to connect with an ethernet cable, which I did. But I have no desire to connect to the internet, print from it, or have others access. I did deselect guest options, and I did put in passwords. But at the end of the process I got the message, "This device & its network services will be temporarily unavailable. Are you sure you want to continue."
I was worried this would shut me down and I wouldn't be able to continue to work. I don't necessarily need to connect wirelessly. It is connected via ethernet cable from machine to device.
Can you advise me how to continue? Did I choose the wrong options?

I bought an external hard drive called "Seagate Backup Plus" From the Apple store to back up everything on my computer and anything new on my computer. It came with Time Machine. The external hard drive disk had 1 or 2 Terabytes. Time Machine says "next backup: When disk is connected." "Oldest backup: July 2, 2014." & Also "Latest back July, 2."

  • My time capsule is not backing up my macbook.  Password issue.  My other mac mini connected wirelessly works fine and backsup correctly.

My Time capsule is is backing up my Mac Mini just fine, however, my Macbook keeps asking me for the password and it does not like any of the passwords I use.  I have since used a pen to reset my Time Capsule and it reset all the network passwords for all 11 devices I had linked to it, however, it did not resolve the issue of my backup issue.  Ironically, the macbook still connects wirelessly with my macbook so I can surf the web with it, however, it does not backup on that same device because it must have a different password... Not sure what to do since my Mac Mini is backing up successfully.  I must have chosen a different password and it saved to that device, is there a way to display the Time Capsule password on my mac mini so I can attemp to use that on my macbook?

What is the current setting of the TC disk access? It has three main levels, device password, disk password and user names and passwords. If you have it set to the last you will need to create a new username and password for the MacBook or recover what you were using.
Have you ever done a backup to the TC via the MacBook?
    What OS does it run?
The default password if you did not set anything is public.
Try manually mounting the TC disk on the MacBook and see if that allows TM to find it.
There is a lot of useful setup and troubleshooting info here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I would install the widget.. A1 and do a full reset of TM in the laptop, A4. As well as verify if you have already done a backup.. A5.
Basic setup of TC for TM is explained here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Recovery of passwords is possible but should not be necessary.

  • I have two time capsules, one for work and one for home, how do I set up the work time capsule to only back up my work files?

I have two time capsules, one for work and one for home, how do I set up the work time capsule to only back up my work files?  Also, how do I add co-workers to my work time capsule and wife to my home time capsule?  Thank you!

You cannot have two different TC setups.. at least until Mountain Lion.. it did introduce some changes but I am not sure if you can setup two different configurations for TM.. you can use two different devices to back up to. I doubt this will help you.
You might be better using a real backup software.. superduper, CCC, chronosync etc.
The TC by default is available to any Mac in the network to do backups. TM will sort itself out and put each computer on a different backup. These are kept in separate sparsebundles.. so that is all fine.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.
