HT1338 outgoing e-mail server not working since upgrade to mountain lion

unable to send mail on one of my e-mail accounts since upgrading to mountain lion

I had this problem as well after upgrading to 10.8.
For all e-mail accounts SMTP servers seemed to be unavailable to Mail, regardless of setting TSL/SSL on or off. It turned out, even Thunderbird was unable to send any mail.
After trying every hint on this forum twice – and to no avail; I found the culprit to my problem. Upgrading my iMac to Mountain Lion had changed the name, that my machine was using in my home network. The new machine name had "(2)" added to the old name. The brackets seem to have disturbed the SMTP servers I use. After changing the name back to anything w/o special characters I was able to send mail again.
Very strange, since no error message lead to this direction, and only the SMTP was affected, everything else on the internet worked like a charm.
So if you run into this problem, and no other solution works for you, make sure your LAN-name is not including any special characters, just letters, numbers and "-".
Mind you: the name I am relating to is not necessarily the one you give your Mac in System Preferences > Sharing. It is the name your home router derives from that name. I am using a Fritzbox as a router and DSL modem; and had to access its web interface to check the actual name that my iMac was using to communicate to the web. That's also where I had to change the name back again.
Don't know why ML caused the name to change in the first place, maybe the whole thing was unrelated and purely incidental to upgrading to 10.8. Using another router your mileage may also vary. You may still give it a try.

  • Bluetooth and Isight not working since upgrade to Mountain Lion

    Hello,
    I have a mid-2010 MBP running OSX 10.8.2.
Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, My bluetooth and iSight both have stopped working.  I have tried the clear the SMC numerous times. Mostly it does not have any effect. However, a couple of times, it has restored service to the iSight and the bluetooth, but as soon as I reboot the machine they are back to being disabled. Sometimes they become available without my resetting the SMC and for seemingly no reason. I have also replaced a couple of different kext files: Apple_iSight.kext and AppleUsbVideoSupport.kext with known good ones. I also Verified and Repaired on the disk. In this case, permissions issues were detected and repaired, but without fixing my original problems.
I would like desperately to resolve this without buying a new disk and doing a fresh install of OSX Lion. I would definitely NOT go back to Moutain Lion in this scenario. But I don't know what do next. I don't see many posts on this subject and those I have seen do not offer much hope. I know I am not the only one suffering with this, but I don't think Apple is addressing the problems, because they may not be pervasive enough right now.
If anyone has found a way to resolve this permanently, please share with me. I would like to roll back to Lion, but can't do that either.
    Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks,
    Brad.

This is likely a conflict with some 3-rd party s/w you have on the MBP but not the other two computers. Have a look in here
 > System Preferences.. Users & Groups | Login Items
Is there something in here that's not in the same list on the other Macs? If so, try removing it and restarting your computer. If that solves the problem, try contacting the developer to see if there's an update.
If that doesn't solve the problem, go through your other 3rd party apps and look for updates on all of them. One of them is stopping your mouse from working properly.

  • Aperture email sharing (Outlook) not working since upgrade to mountain lion

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion and sharing of photos via email no longer works.  I've seen posts of problems with Apple mail; but not sure if others are having this issue with outlook.  When I choose 1 or multtiple photos to share vioa email; it goes through an export process, Outlook dialogue email opens, but NO attachements or files embedded.
This worked fine before upgrade; others experienced or have solution?  I can certainly send photos the "old fashioned" way; but at 10mb a photo, not practical.  Very frustrating.

I have found it. It seems that in Lion we had to convert the filename from Mac native to Posix format, in mountain lion this is no longer necessary. If you want to modify the script here are the instructions:
Finder->Applications. Right click on Aperture and choose "Open package contents"
Contents->Plugins. Open "Microsoft Outlook.applescript" (with the applescript editor)
You should see the following 3 lines:
-- convert the image path from UNIX to Mac
set this_imagefile_path to (POSIX file this_imagefile) as string
    make new attachment at new_message with properties {file:(this_imagefile_path)}
these should be replaced with this line:
    make new attachment at new_message with properties {file:(this_imagefile)}
You are not allow to directly edit this file so save a duplicate somewhere.
    Rename the original script file.
Copy the modified file to the Contents->Plugins folder of the package. It has to be called "Microsoft Outlook.applescript"
You will probably be asked for your password a number of times.

  • Messages do not work since upgrading to Mountain Lion

I have used the AOL and MAC account for chatting with no problem, for years.  Then about two weeks ago I updated to Mountain Lion, from Lion.  Now under this Messages interface, I can see my messages going out, but nothing coming in.  I only know this now because we are starting to receive emails and phone calls from family and friends asking why we have not been answering any of their messages.  They see me as online, they send messages, but we don't get them.  I type to them, I see what I am sending, but they don't get them.  I have played with the individual accounts until I can get those up separately.  I can then communicate with others on which ever individual account I have opened.  With our telephone on speaker and each of us on the computer trying to figure this out, we were able to get that to work with one of our family members.  But when I shut down the computer or restart, or close Messages, I have to start all over again to get an individual account to open separately before communicating.
I have an IPAD 2 and IPAD 3 in the house.  The same problem appears to be happening with them.  No more messages come in unless I have the individual account on the IMAC set up for that account.  That doesn't make any sense since Mountain Lion isn't on either of the IPADs and the communications is through the Apple Extreme router, not the IMAC (I assume).
Also, all my previous attempts at communicating populate the messages window every time I open it.  I have the preferences setup to delete all previous conversations, but that doesn't seem to work.
    Thanks
    Tim

    Hi,
When you start Messages fro the first time you are asked for an Apple ID
When this is verified and entered it appears in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts and is Enabled.
The App should have also picked on on those iChat Accounst you had before.
These should be Enabled if they were when you last used iChat.
Exactly which "Accounts" are logged in can be seen in Message Menu > Accounts and will include the iMessage "Account" and Bonjour.
In the Window menu you will see CMD +0 for the Messages window and CMD+1 for the "Buddies" window which is a combined list at this stage.
Go to the Preferences > General Section and Untick the "Collect all accounts into one list".
This will give you separate iChat type Buddy lists.
You can check if that account/Buddy list is set to Invisible or if in the Preferences > Accounts > Security you have settings that will block some people from seeing you as On line.
You are saying Buddies can see you as On Line which implies they are still sending to your AIM based Names (@Mac.com is a valid AIM Screen Name)
I am not sure from your post if you are trying to iMessage their email IDs thinking they are Apple IDs and that they are using Messages as well.
There is no Buddy list for iMessages side
No-one can tell you are "On Line" until they have your details in the "To" spot in Messages with the correct iMessaged contact info (iPhone Number or Apple ID)
Obviously an Apple ID can be an email or look like one.
In some cases they are also valid AIM Screen Names as well.
In the case or the @mac.com name you may have linked this Apple ID to iMessages as well.

  • Optical drive not working since upgrading to Mountain Lion

    Backstory:
I ordered a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display after a coworker expressed interest in my current laptop (a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MBP). I had just upgraded the current MBP to Mountain Lion, but decided to sell in order to offset the cost of the new machine.
As I started backing things up last week, I realized that my optical drive had ceased functioning ("The operation can't be completed because you don't have the necessary permission." pops up whenever any optical media, blank or otherwise, is inserted).
I took the computer to the Apple Store, where they kept it overnight. They tried swapping in a new optical drive, but were unable to get the machine to correctly recognize optical media. I was told it was a permissions issue with Mountain Lion. They offered to downgrade the OS for me, but Mountain Lion is one of the selling points (as is "working optical drive"). Now my coworker is a little less eager to buy.
My new MacBook Pro should arrive in the next few days, at which point I'll take my current machine back to the Apple Store. I'll try to get them to do a full OS reinstall and see if they can repair the permissions issue in the process, but I'm not optimistic.
    My question is this:
Is it likely a subsequent OS update will address this issue? Or am I simply out of luck?

You paid for a license to use Mountain Lion & that license is forever tied to YOUR Apple ID. You cannot distribute Mountain Lion in any way shape or form. If you were to sell your computer, with Mountain Lion installed, as I've already provided, the new owner will never be able to update or restore OS X, should the need arise. You will have sold the new owner a huge bag of hurt.
    Good luck.

  • Time Machine Not Working Since Upgrade to Mountain Lion

    Hi All,
Just upgraded a couple days ago from Lion to Mountain Lion...
Since the uprgrade Time Machine has not been able to run a back up. When I select "Back Up Now" I get the "Looking for Backup Disk" message for several minutes after which I get the following error message:
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “The Hive”.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Keith  Malarick’s MacBook (2).sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 112).
Im using a late 2008 Aluminum MacBook and a 2nd Generation Time Capsule. In addition to not being able to run back ups I am unable to access my previous backups through Time Machine .
Sounds like others are having similar issues as well.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Best,
    Keith

I received the same error and experienced the same issue that you have described but after performing a Time Capsule soft reset and then toggling the TM Off and then back On I was able issue a backup now and see my previous backups.
Here is the link to where I posted my fix; https://discussions.apple.com/message/19069543#19069543. Someone else had success using a different method. The only comment / complaint that I have since the ML OS X upgrade is that TM now takes at least 20 to 30 seconds before I can click/select a backup.
    I hope this helps.

  • Email not readable since upgrading to Mountain Lion

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I am not able to read my email in the upgraded version of Mail.  All my emails ON MY MAC are readable as normal, but my Inbox emails are there and I can read the single line information (From, Subject, Date Received, Mailbox) for all my emails but when I try and open one I get the revolving spindle wheel and Loading message.  My sent box appears empty unless I send a test email and then all my sent emails appear but again when I try and open one all I get is the same as for my inbox emails.  If I quit and reopen Mail, the inbox does not change but all my sent emails "disappear" again.  Is this an indexing problem or do I need to rebuild my mailboxes.  Although I have back ups, I do not want to take any action to make this situation worse.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Mail server not working after upgrade

After a few hours, my server finally came back up however mail is not working.
In the /var/log/mail.log I see many error  messages related to the same thing from Postfix whenever an inbound mail is recieved.
    May 24 06:26:22 my.server.com postfix/postscreen[25712]: CONNECT from [62.13.138.73]:64283 to [192.168.0.3]:25

    May 24 06:26:23 my.server.com postfix/master[54]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/postscreen pid 25712 exit status 1
    Help!

I'd guess that the postscreen database is missing or corrupt.
please issue the following Terminal.app commands:
    postconf -n -c /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/ | grep -i postscreen
    postconf -c /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/ | grep -i postscreen
and anonymize the output if and as desired.   If you anonymize, please consistenty replace the domain portion of your URL(s) to example.com, example.net and/or example.org (these are RFC-reserved bogus domains) and replace the server's host name to something else if that's more sensitive than "mail" or "www" or "server" — consistency in these changes is important — and alter any IP addresses included (other than 127.0.0.1 / localhost) to 10.20.30.40 (or some other private IP address — again, consistency in these changes is important — and then post that output here.
Before making any changes, get a complete system backup or two, on an external disk.  That's your path back if something here goes badly wrong, weird or otherwise untoward.
Once there are complete backups and entirely as a test / guess / experiment, I'd look to rename an existing postscreen database out of the way and see if a new cache database gets created, and would also check the file ownerships and protections of the files in that area.
    $ sudo ls -ale@ /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mta/
    Password:
    total 48
    drwxr-x---   5 _postfix  mail     170 Jan 30 15:20 .
    drwxr-xr-x  13 root      wheel    442 Jan 28 10:57 ..
    -rw-------   1 _postfix  mail      33 May  5 16:08 master.lock
    -rw-------   1 _postfix  mail   16384 May 24 08:22 postscreen_cache.db
    -rw-------   1 _postfix  mail    1024 May 24 10:04 prng_exch
    $
The two files that are most interesting in the above are the . and postscreen_cache.db files.
There is also an upgrade log around, and you'll definitely want to have a look in that — to see what (else?) went wrong here.  (Off the top, I don't recall the name of the upgrade log file.  In recent releases, it's usually something like /var/log/install.log — also check the system logs for "upgrade" messages.)

  • HT4864 mail not working after upgrade to mountain lion

Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I have been unable to get my mail to work, while ICloud is working just fine.
What settings do I need to change in mail to get the programme to work again?
    Thanks for your help!

Delete your iCloud account from Mail's Accounts preference pane and then add it back.  See if that won't jump start the account.
The font size you use is a bit small  for these  old eyes.  Can you use the standard font and size to make it easier on us old types?

  • HT4798 username/password not working after upgrade to mountain lion

hello, on my imac after upgrading to mountain lion my computer password and/or username seems not to work anymore: when i want to install an update or search for updates on the app store the combination i used so far, does not work anymore. i tried to find out how to reset the computer password but without too much success, and i'm a bit confused, what can i do? thanks a lot

You went wrong at the very beginning by not erasing the hard drive of a used computer before starting to use it yourself. I suggest you do that now.
Back up all data to at least two different storage devices.
Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • TrackPad physical click not working after upgrade to Mountain Lion

Does anybody know how to get my trackpad working again after upgrading to Mountain Lion?
I recently upgraded my MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009, Intel Core 2 Duo) from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Everything seems to have gone well, except for trackpad behavior.
The primary problem is that the physical click of the trackpad is now erratic. Sometimes a physical click will work, and other times it will not work.
Note: The "tapping" of the trackpad DOES work consistently. I have confirmed that System Prefs > Trackpad > "Tap to Click" is enabled, and so tapping is not the problem. (The "tap to click" selector does exhibit a unique behavior however--if I DESELECT "tap to click," then the physical click no longer works at all. It looks like the "tap to click" selector can completely disable the physical click of the trackpad, but cannot enable the physical click completely.)
I have also checked the settings on System Prefs > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad, but none of those settings affect the physical click of the trackpad.
I tried zapping the PRAM, but that did not change the problem with physical clicking on the trackpad.
    Grateful for any ideas...
    Nertz

I ended up taking my MacBook to the Apple Genius Bar. The staff were very helpful.
The apple staff said that there is no known link between the upgrade to Mountain Lion and trackpad misbehavior. In my case, they made some hardware adjustments to the trackpad, and all is working properly again.
Bottom line: if you think that your trackpad misbehavior is related to Mountain Lion, you might want to take it to an Apple Genius Bar. If there really is no connection between Mountain Lion and trackpad behavior, then perhaps they can fix it for you (as happened to be true in my case). But if there IS a connection in some way, it would be helpful for Apple employees to see your evidence firsthand.
    Best wishes to all...
