HT1338 sound is dead

Hi guys,
After installing the security update to OSX 10.6.8, my audio seems to have died. It's weird cause applications like iTunes, web video don't have sound, but system sounds like the empty trash sound and alerts seem to work. Can anyone shed some light? Any help appreciated.
cheers,
Lam

since now im doin all sound testing with my headphones on. i uninstalled the hd sound driver. but it didnt work either. i tried different drivers, including these old ones from toshiba's site. im wondering if formatting the whole system would help. i still hear some cracks while muting or unmuting, while system starts as well. as i turn the volume up they are louder. weird?
edit: as for these cracks, i noticed that when i play a sound ie. a song, i hear  a crack and when i stop it i hear another.

I updated my ipad2  today from ios5 to iOS 5.0.1 , my sound is dead..... What to do ??? Help!!!

Make sure your device is not muted.  Double tap the home button > swipe from left to right > check speaker icon. Also check the "mute switch / rotation lock switch". If those check out fine, back up your iPad in iTunes > restore as a new device

  • Sound Jack dead on my Mini-Need options

It seems my external sound jack is dead. I have speakers hooked to it and nothing coming out. Swapped the plug to my laptop and music plays.
Yes the volume is turned up because when I unplug it, the internal speaker jumps to life...But that sound quality is just not gonna cut it for listening to my tunes.
This thing is well out of warranty so I don't think taking it into the store or calling is going to do me any good.....Is there such a thing a bluetooth or USB speakers?
    Thanks!

The m-audio Transit will give you a USB option for both audio in and out (including digital).

  • Satellite A35-S159 - sound is dead

hey. i got totally no sound. volume is maxed everywhere, drivers reinstalled, soundcard is detected and shows no issues,  i checked with headphones with no effect, i'm pretty much lost. im using windows xp. and if this has any meaning - on the laptop's front lights, these on the left with cd sound and digital sound are not lit.
    thanks!
edit: another thing that seemed important is that when i press the mute button i can hear some crack. its like i press it <crack> i press it again <crack>. could it be connected to the digital sound led?

  • Is my sound card dead or wh

Okay...this is a new one on me...
I am running Windows XP, Service Pack , and have a Soundblaster Li've! Gamer 5.. It's never given me any trouble before, but tonight it seemed somehow to have mysteriously failed...Device Manager called it simply "PCI device" and I got no sound at all, just blips from the PC's internal speaker. Rebooted to see if that fixed the problem...it didn't. Instead it just didn't show up on Device Manager at ALL.
So I opened the case, took the card out. Looked normal to me, so I put it back in. This time, Windows recognized it, but only as "Multimedia Audio Device", not as "Creative Labs (etc)..." the way it generally does. I tried running the installation CD I have, but it says that Li'veware is incompatible with this version of Windows and won't run. Came to the website here looking for drivers, but could only find driver updates that require me to have some kind of driver on the system to START with, and I can't think how but mine seems to have just...gone. Can I get some drivers and fix this that way, or am I looking at having to buy a new card here?
Anyone had this kind of problem before, or can otherwise help me out? I'd be awfully grateful for any assistance...

    kyla,
You could try this. Remove the sound card from the computer and boot up the computer. Let Windows finish loading and then have it shutdown. Slot back the sound card to the PCI slot and boot the computer.

  • Suspect dead sound car on macbook pro core2duo

    Hello,
I put my macbook to sleep one night by shutting the lid and when I woke it up the other day after work the sound was all crackly and I could barely hear it. If I plug in head phones there is no sound what so ever coming through.
Is the sound card dead? How do I tell?
    Cheers

    Welcome to the Forums!
Insert your Install DVD 1 disc and restart with the d key held down. This will boot you into the Apple Hardware Test, which will let you know if there's a problem with the hardware.

  • Loss of Sound

    hey everybody,
My desktop has lost all sound output. today I was trying to fix this, reconfiguring alsa, uninstalling and reinstalling it and setting everything up again. still no sound.
shutdown the comp, made sure the cables still hooked up on the inside (I had just put in a new fanless heatsink on my vid card last week). everything is fine.
I booted up with a live cd, first tried fedora13...only to have fedora barf and not load the live environment.
then booted from crunchbang 10a2, which worked fine. still no sound here, either.
could this be caused by anything else, or is my on-board sound just dead?
is there anything else to troubleshoot?

    Hi jamba,
I think the issue is that your output of lspci shows no Audio device. Perhaps it got disabled in the BIOS? dmesg output may indicate something else afoot with your audio hardware.
    Hope that helps.
I'll check out dmesg output.  also still need to check if something got disabled in the BIOS.
!snd_intel8x0m  <- is your problem. Your sound module got blacklisted so un-list it. Modprobe it then try sound again or just reboot and it should work.
moonswan.  snd_intel8x0 is the sound card (I think), in the alsa wiki it said it was recommended to blacklist snd_intel8x0m as a quirk fix.
No sound with or without it blacklisted still :-(

  • How Can I Get An Analog Sound From Logic's Plug-In's?

    Hi all,
I'm working on an 80's New Wave influenced project, for which Logic has many plug-in's -- unfortunately most all of them have a distinctly digital clean sound to them.
What are some ways (filters, compressors, etc?) that I can alter some of these sounds to sound more like they did on 80's analog recordings?

Well, 80's New Wave music was known for lots of things, but clean analog sound wasn't necessarily one of'em in my opinion.
The 80's was the first "digital decade", and as all the new toys showed up musicians everywhere went wild using and abusing them. Hence the 80's proliferation of digital reverb, gated drums, drum machines, buzzy synths and grainy samples.
I'd say that sound would be best approximated with Logic's Silver or Platinum verb, or Space Designer with some old Lexicon patches... And maybe the 'bit reduction distortion' plug, whatever it's called (in the distortion directory).
Are we talking Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson "New Wave", or Duran Duran, Thomas Dolby, Human League kinda new wave? There were lots of variations... But again, the over-use of digital effects and synthetic elements is what generally what makes the 80's sound like the 80's.
(at least, that's the way I remember it.... I'm still mad at the guy who convinced me to sell my Jupiter 8 coz that "buzzy" sound was dead now that DX7's had the 'clean digital sound of the future'. !!!)

  • Sound disappeared from Sample Editor?

Can anyone help? The sound has completely disappeared from my Sample Editor window and also the Audio bin.
I can't audition any loops in the list now, but if I drag them to a track in the main Arrange page they play fine. Then double clicking on that Audio loop or any audio clip in Arrange to bring it up in the Sample Editor window shows the waveform okay, but playing it just goes through the motions with the cursor moving as normal but no sound. Dead. Nada.
Is it me? I am not a novice with Logic but I can't work this out. I tried throwing away the preference files in Library/Prefs but nothing doing.
Any help would be appreciated as I can't edit in Logic now like this.
    Cheers
    Musolen

    Well thanks again Chorleyman,
I have had a play around and added another Audio strip in the Environment, set it to Output No.256 (The highest) and the Sound in the Sample Editor came straight back on. It's still called Audio and not PreListen, I can't seem to rename that, but it works now so I have my solution.
Thanks again for the advice and to everyone else reading this and mulling it over.
    Cheers,
    Musolen.

  • Sound on X-Fi dies after headphones plugged

I am running Vista and have the X-Fi sound card. I have downloaded the latest drivers for Vista. What I notice is this:?After every few days of having no problems, all of a sudden, when I plug in my headphones into the jack on the front of my new Dell, the sound goes dead. It is not the headphone jack, as I first suspected. Because when I reload my Creative Drivers, the sound comes back to life. I don't know what to think about this. Should I trade in my X-Fi for a different sound card, because this problem is definitely related to X-Fi and Vista.
Ps. Originally I had XP on this machine, and my headphones worked flawlessly with the X-Fi and XP. Please tell me there is a "workaround" for this.
    ??????Stan

Ground loop is causing that humming sound... If you can, connect your soundcard using digital connection, preferably optical.
If you cannot use digital connections, try connecting your pc and amp to same power outlet. That should eliminate that ground loop.
You can also purchase ground loop isolator (galvanic isolator) if you cannot connect both pc and amp to same outlet.
    Hope this hel
    ps.

  • HELP - My sound is gone, both audibly and in Prefs

My sound has crapped out on me. I thought maybe my speakers had just gotten unpluged but it's everything. In the Sound section of Prefs. It no longer shows the digital and analog options... it doesn't show anything in the box at all.
Is my sound board dead? I didn't know Macs even had sound cards at least stand-alone units. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
From what did You import Your movie ?
    • miniDV tape Camera - FireWire
    • .avi, .wmv, .mpeg4, etc
My general list on this - May be not Your problem at all ?
    *No Audio in iMovie*
Most common origin is use of audio from iTunes.
    Work around -
    • Select needed audio to one new playlist
    • Copy out this as an Audio-CD .aiff (not .mp3)
    • Use this in the movieproject
    Other origins are
    1. strange/ailient file formats as -
    • .mp3, .avi, .wmv etc
    • Convert them into .aiff 48kHz 16-bit and use this
    2. the Mac is set wrongly in regard of midi -
    • Close iMovie and other programs
    • Start GarageBand
    • Make a new GB-project and play some notes
    • Close GB and Save
    • Now try iMovie again
    3. No audio when playback in iMovie 1 to HD 6.
    a. in iMovie pref - deselect ”Playback via Camera”
    b. in System preferences - see that Audio out is not set to zero. Mine often does this
    without me knowing why.
    Stuttering audio and video
    1. FileVault is ON - Turn it off
    2. More than 50 audio files in a movie-project
Mix down to one audio clip
    3. Project is stored on one (USB) external hard disk - should be a FireWire one
    4. the External hard disk is not Mac OS Extended formatted - but
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange and this will not work for Video.
    5. To little free space on internal boot hard disk.
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space when project is imported and edited and this goes for
4x3 SD Video. For 16x9 HD my guess would be about 5 times more at least.
Neither Mac OS, iMovie or iDVD can address any other hard disk than the boot drive for it’s
scratch files. (Unlike Final Cut Express/Pro where You select scratch disk/s)
    6. Network storage - DOESN’T WORK

  • Ejecting a CD in a *dead* MBP

    Hey guys
I've got a late 2008 17" MacBook Pro which had it's logic board die. It's completely dead - I boot the machine and get nothing - no chime, no screen, no boot. I've taken it to Apple and if I want to get it working again I need a new logic board. I've elected to get a new laptop instead of doing the repair.
Only problem is, I can see no way to get the Snow Leopard installation DVD that I inserted into the drive to attempt booting off a DVD.
Is there any way to eject a disc with the machine off? And, preferably, without damaging the drive as I'd like to sell it as a spare part?
I've googled around a bit but no-one seems to have any advice for this particular problem
    Joe

    Hi flukazoid,
One 'last ditch" thought without taking the drive out of the computer would be to try booting in target Disk mode, by holding down the "t" key with the old MBP attached to the new one with a Firewire cable.
Sometimes even seemingly "dead" machines will boot in Target Disk mode, and on recent ones the Optical drive should be accessible through this means as well as the HD.
(I'm assuming you have already tried simply holding the eject button down while pressing the power button on the computer).
Yours sounds properly "dead" though, so I wouldn't be too hopeful of success. Still, worth a try.
Failing this you will have to at least remove the drive from the computer. How hard this is depends on whether the computer is a unibody or pre-unibody model. The first unibody 17" models weren't actually released until early january 2009, but some people refer to them as "late 2008" models, because they were the first of the unibody models in that size and to differentiate them from the updated models introduced in June 2009. Which one is yours?
Once the drive has been removed , you have two options. You either dismantle the drive to remove the disc (see http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Jammed-Optical-Drives/772/1 ) , or you attach it to the appropriate external interface (IDE/PATA if it is one of the earlier, pre-unibody models, or SATA if it is a unibody) hooked up to your USB or Firewire ports and eject it from there. (You may be able to use the "bridge" in an HD external enclosure of the right kind to do this, if you have one to hand and don't mind a bit of temporary dismantling of the enclosure).
    Cheers

  • Post-Lightning Strike: No Sound

I have a 5 year old 15" MacBook Pro (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo).  We had a tree behind our house struck by lightning, and we were close enough that several things in our house got fried: TV, washing machine, my 23" monitor, the 85 watt power supply for my laptop, and curiously, it looks like my sound is dead.  Both the power supply and monitor were connected to the laptop in question which was asleep at the time.
The volume icon in the menu bar is grayed out.  If I do anything with the volume/mute buttons, it shows full volume and a circle with a slash through it.  If I open Preferences/Sound/Output, it doesn't show speakers, just optical digital-out port.
So my question is, for all you hardware experts, have you ever seen something like this where the sound is blown but the rest of the system seems OK?  Is the sound integrated into the system board, or can it be replaced seperately?  I haven't noticed any other problems with the system, and it has been rebooted since the surge.  Unfortunately my house is in major disarray and can't be lived in with a giant hole in the roof and water damage, so it's going to be several days before I can dig out my Tech Tools disc.
Any thoughts are appreciated, and thanks in advance!

One additional bit of info: I just did a Permissions repair and a Verify Disk, the Verify seemed fine.  The permisions repair showed something interesting, which I think is not related, but you never know:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
