HT1338 system preference wont start

system preference wont starrt under the apple icon

Hello,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • System Preferences wont work/open

    Apple Product : MacBook
    Version 10.6.8
    Heres my problem :
The System Preferences wont open at all. I already tried clicking on " > System Preferences" and that doesn't work. Resetting my computer doesn't seem to work either. I've also tried looking it up in Spotlight, but that didn't work either. The Application disappeared off of my Dock as well. The same thing happend to my Terminal Application. If I try and change something that originally was in the System Preferences (Such as Dock or Display or Parental Controls) it brings up stuff like "prefPane". "_CodeSignature" and "CodeResources" also pop up also. Advice? Suggestions?

    Hi there ThePaintball,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.
Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199
If the issue occurs in various applications, or in Mac OS X
For example, if no applications can be opened.
Tip: If the issue began right after you performed a Mac OS X re-installation (excluding erase-installation), see Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X.
The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account. If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Give the new user a name and short name.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
Click OK, or quit System Preferences.
Start up in Safe Mode (Mac OS X v10.2 or later only). If the issue does not occur, there may be an issue with a startup item, login item, or kext file. Refer to this article for troubleshooting suggestions.
If the issue does not appear to be related to preferences, a login item, or a kext file, and still persists in Safe Mode, there may be an issue with a cache file in your home folder:
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Home.
    Open the Library folder.
Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
    Attempt to reproduce the issue.
If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash.
If issue persists, from the Finder's Go menu, choose Go To Folder.
    Go to this folder: /Library
Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
    Attempt to reproduce the issue.
If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash.
If issue persists, go to step 4.
If the issue persists, there may be an issue with a third-party font file in your home folder.  See this article for information about using Font Book to enable or disable fonts in Mac OS X v10.3 or later.

my system preferences wont open anymore, whats up

    Hi xronjonesx,
To make sure that we are on the same page, you cannot open System Preferences. Have you tried opening it from the Apple Drop down menu? If you are still unsuccessful, then the next step would be to reinstall OS X Snow Leopard as that app is part of the operating system and the reinstallation with all the software updates afterwards will resolve the issue.

  • Help Problem NOT Solved Why have my system preferences suddenly started to reset back to default every time I reboot

Why have my system preferences suddenly started to reset back to default every time I reboot At first I thought it was happening because I disconnected my Google account, but now I've disable that account and switched to Firefox.  I wasn't sure how my browser setting could have anything to do with my system preferences and now I think it's some glitch or missed setting that is causing the problem.  Oh & I locked my preference panel and that did not help.
In addition to what I say above, not only are all my system preferences being reset to default, but also the preferences for word and Excel.  I'm sure it's affecting other programs, but Word & Excel are the main ones that I have a lot of custom setting for.  Especially annoying is the fact that my ribbon commands are reset.  All this started happening when I signed up for a Google Drive account.  The only system updates have been the usual security updates.  I deleted my Google account but haven't uninstalled it.  I'll try this, but I can't figure out how that would result in all OS preferences being reset.

  • System Preferences wont quit, constant restarts ***??

Leopard is seriously causing me annoyance.
I have just done a fresh install from the dvd on a freshly erased hard disk & already i have had to restart about 10 times in the past day due to various applications crashing. System preferences however just keeps doing it & wont even force quit. Repairing permissions has no effect, Disk first aid says my drive is fine & i have done all software updates.
Does anyone know where I could start with this, apart from moving to Vista that is....

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • System Preferences always starts when logging in....

I'm doing some general maintenace on my parent's computer (macmini ppc 10.4.8). There seems to be a handfull of odd issues happening. One of them is that System Prefs always starts when logging in after a reboot. The login items for the user account has nothing checked on, and it's only his user account that has this issue.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    thanks

I'm a complete douche. I looked in Login Items for the 10th time and this time my brain kicked in and saw "System Preferences". I feel so stupid. I looked in there multiple times and must have thought... well, I don't know what I thought. The sad thing is I've been working with unix for several years. I think it's time for a new career.
    Thanks!

  • System preferences wont open

so im still kinda new to my macbook and the other day i noticed that my system preferences was gone and i can not find it, and i do not know what i did or what happened. is there anywhere i can download it from or anything like that?

If its icon isn't on the Dock, then open Mac HD/Applications/ and drag the System Preferences.app icon onto the Dock. Assuming that you're new to Macs, but familiar with PC boxes, see these:

Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

  • System preferences wont unlock

I am running Yosemite version 10.10.2 on a Mac Mini Mid 2010 with 16  GB of ram.  Every time I click to unlock anything in my system preferences it unlocks and then immediately locks back.  I cannot make any changes to any System preferences.  I need to make changes but before I can even click on it, it locks back again before I can even click on anything.  I do not use a system password to make any changes or to install so I don't know what to do next.

  • System Preferences wont group my preferences

So... maybe the title wasnt very clear.
Today I took my mac to school, installed iTunes 10 and checked out 2 little apps, Haudini and TinkerTool, because for some reason when I booted up (It was the second time it happened) Mac OS shows hidden files without me asking to.
Everything fine until like half an hour ago I noticed my system preferences are just organized by alphabetical order, no groups.
You know, you would get your groups in System Preferences, and at the bottom your custom preferences? No more.
Anyone know why? and more important, anyone knows how to fix it?

    Hi,
If you mean it is not in the DOCK then go to the Applications folder.
It should then be a simple matter of dragging it back to the DOCK.
Dragging something Off the DOCK and Letting go removes it form the DOCK but does not delete the item. (You usually get the Puff of Smoke animation)
