HT1338 System Preferences problem

MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.7.5:  My System Preferences is 'locked' on Desktop & Screensaver (spinning ball).  I have to Force Quit to get out of System Preferences.  Problem reported to Apple via my computer.  How do I fix?  Thanks, Paulg1007

Move the com.apple.systempreferences.plst file out of /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if that fixes the problem.

Every time I try to open the Desktop and Screen Saver page in System Preferences, the window freezes then quits. The other preferences work fine. Has anyone else had a problem similar to this and if so, how did you fix it? I have yet to find any information this subject.

The closest thing I could find that is similar to my situation is the following article.

  • Macbook pro os x v. 10.7.5 system preferences problem

Recently, i just downloaded and installed the os x lion package. Since then, it seems that every time i go to open up my system preferences it doesn't/can't respond. I hook my laptop to my tv through the use of the mini dvi port to hdmi, so i need to be able to configure screen size adjustments that can only be found in system preferences. I have re-re-re intalled the os x lion because people have informed me that may very well be the problem. When system preferences freezes it needs to be force quit for me to be able to close the window.
    can anyone help me?
    thanks,
    Tyler

System preferences has error message: damaged or incomplete.

  • System Preferences Problem - Network Pane Inaccesible.

I am having a problem with iTunes on an iMac G3SE running 10.4.11. One idea to deal with the problem involves checking the network settings/proxies, etc. Great... easy to get at... But that is not my *Real Problem*!
That is that I'm having difficulties getting into the Network Pane (and only THAT pane) of System Preferences. I open Sys Prefs... no problem. I open Network... no problem. Then, a second or so later a sheet descends saying "Your network settings have been changed by another application". I click "OK" The sheet ascends... and just as I am moving my mouse to the required button, down comes the sheet again. Click OK... ascends... descends... ... ... and so on. At that point it has also become impossible to close Sys Prefs... the sheet blocks me out from that level of the display, so I have to "Force Quit" Sys Prefs (which, luckily, works... I wouldn't want to have to keep hitting the power button to effect a restart!!).
Anyone ever had a problem like this... how do I resolve... I can't think of anything that's installed on the G3 that could be interfering with the settings... and why does the sheet keep descending, rather than going away completely when I acknowledge its presence by hitting "OK".
I've tried deleting the Sys Prefs plists, in case it is a preferences issue... but that doesn't explain the suggested existence of some program that I don't recognise as interfering with the network settings.

To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.
Try this cure for Security update...

Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Airport Interface...

  • Network System Preferences Problem (Recent)

If anyone has any idea of how to fix this problem I would be grateful.
When I choose Network in System Preferences, a small window pops up in front of the main window saying "Your network settings have been changed by another application." I click OK and the same window pops up, over and over. It is stuck in a loop; I can't get past it. The main window (Network System Preferences) behind the small window looks right, with the normal messages. The only way I can get out of the loop is to force System Preferences to quit. My network connection is working (so I can post this), but I can't get into Network System Preferences. So, I can't change any settings, or even see what they are.
I discovered this last night, when (apparently) something went bananas at my ISP and I lost the connection. The ISP was back on the air this morning, but this situation is unchanged. Previously I used Network System Preferences in setting up the connection (changing something after a previous ISP problem, over a year ago), as well as telling the system how long to keep the connection up before asking me if I want to remain online. I looked at System Preferences.app in the Applications folder, and no part of the package contents has changed in at least 1.5 years.
Possibly some data file has gotten corrupted, but this behavior is clearly a bug, I would say. I have a DSL connection with EarthLink (if it matters), and the connection seems to be working normally now.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found another approach (rather than trashing the files mentioned) by BDAqua) that seems to have worked. It is:
Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.
I can now get to the Network panel without the annoying message loop, and so far I haven't seen any adverse effects. Does anybody know of a reason why this might cause a (new) problem?
Also, someone (it's hard to keep track of the various discussion forums) suggested that, after going to the Network panel once, it's OK to go back to Security and uncheck the box. Apparently the problem will have solved itself. Does anyone have any comments about this?

  • Mail, Calendar, Contacts System Preference problems

I am having trouble updating account informtaion in the Mail, Calendar, Contacts System Preferences.
I can update account information but when I close the System preference panel and reopen it, the changes are not saved and revert to the previous state.
I can change account information in Mail, iCal and Address Book but any changes are not reflected in the Mail, Calendar, Contacts System Preference panel.
    A Lion bug?
Any insight or advice is appreciated.

I have this exact same issue!
I was on 2.0.1 running fine until late last week, noticed emails would not show up unless I had opened them in outlook. I thought I ran into a bug so I upgraded to 2.0.2. Now I can sync my email if outlook had them opened previously, but no calendar or contacts at all. I don't think my exchange admins will move me to another server, any other ideas?
I love my iphone but if these features don't work I can't use it. I would appreciate any ideas.

  • HT1338 system preferences are frezee when I Try to update my desktop

    Hi.
I need help with my computer, I have a Mac Pro 13", resently I buy this computer arround 4 or 5 mounths and I have troobles with the system preference , I try too update the system and reboot the system but nothing happen.
Please if you have any comment for help, I appreciated you support.
    regards.

Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

  • Mavericks system preferences problem

System Preferences panel says: Preferences Error...You can't open because it dosen't work on intel-based Mac. True on Mac 27" and Mac Mini just purchased last month.

You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support, I'd recommend you all AppleCare immediately. I suspect either your download of Mavericks or the install went haywire.
BTW you can easily reinstall Mavericks by restarting, when you hear the start up tone hold down the Option Key and then select Install OS X and install to your internal drive. Don't worry all your data will be in-tact however that being said it is ALWAYS smart to backup prior to any major update or change.

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Managed Client System Preference problem

I am pushing out MCX to my 10.5/10.6 clients. I'd like to manage the System Preferences pane, disabling Time Machine and Accounts preferences. However, if I manage ANY preferences, the "Other" system preference pane becomes disabled. I can't find a way to explicitly turn these "other" preferences back on. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I would get my install DVD out and do an archive and install.
