HT1338 text-to-speech function on 10.8.2 hotkeys rarely work for me

I love the text-to-speech function with the clearer voices.  BUT...  it's inconsistent!
Sometimes the hotkeys work, sometimes they don't.  And the dysfunction seems to be increasing in frequency and duration.
I have tried setting all different combinations of hotkey combos to make it work.
I gave uninstalled doublecommand just in case = no change.
I have a MacBook Air with OS X 10.8.2
* A weird detail:  If I start the text-to-speech successfully with the mouse, the HOTKEYS ALWAYS work to STOP the speech.  But rarely work to start it.....
Yes I can use the mouse menu but that takes too long and sometimes that is not even available in MS Word.
It's such an awesome feature but so flakey on reliability.
Any suggestions on ironing this out?

Hello Creative Smith,
After $20 for Apple Support and a total of ~ 3 hours working with them, we found a solution.
Here it is:
WARNING:  Make sure you type or better yet copy and past the command line within the Terminal for Step 1 EXACTLY as it is.  No typos.  Apple Support told me if you don't, you could screw some things up.
STEP 1:
In Terminal type:
sudo sample SpeechSynthesisServer -file ~/Desktop/sample.txt
Step 2:
In Monitor Force Quit SpeechsynthesisServer
Step 3:
In Finder, go to the folder
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/S peechSynthesis.framework/Versions
Step 4:
Drag SpeechSynthesisServer.app to dock
Step 5
run SpeechSynthesisServer.app
Test it out.  That should fix it.  It did for me.
I really hope this helps you.  It's been driving me crazy!

  • I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud

I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud option in Acrobat. Kindly help me to sortout this problems?

So I tried generating the same PDFs on two other computers that have Acrobat 9 Pro.  Results were reproduced.  The verdict is:
    - complex PDF files (that is, containing cross-references, tables of contents, and bookmarks) generated by Acrobat 9.x Pro are roughly 2-5x larger than the identical file generated with Acrobat 8.x Pro.
    - different PDF conversion settings make a negligable difference (less than 10% rather than 70-80%).
    - using the "Reduce File Size" or "Optimize PDF" option cuts the file size roughly in half, almost always resulting in a "image downsampling mask" warning message, which requires acknowledgement (that is a problem for batch processing or automation).
    - adding an Acrobat watermark to the file cuts the file size roughly in half.
    - just using Save As to another filename has no effect on file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 with links but no PDF bookmarks still results in the inflated file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 without any links or bookmarks results in approximately the same file size as the Acrobat 8 PDF with full links and bookmarks.
It appears that Acrobat 9's manner of adding links is what's bloating  the files, and in my case it's probably not related to images or image resolution/print quality.  It's a shame, because Acrobat 9 seems to have made some  improvements to the Review Tracker interface, and a few other bells and  whistles which I haven't really gotten around to exporing yet.  But  unless I find a way to keep my links and the PDF file sizes comparable to what I was  getting with Acrobat 8 Pro, it looks like I'm going to stay with Acrobat 8.

  • Captivate 4 text to speech function

I just downloaded the trial version for Captivate 4. I
specifically wanted to see the new text to speech function that
they have added to it. When I downloaded it and tried to use it, I
received an error message that stated "Unable to decode and import
the selected wav/mp3 file". Is anyone familiar with this?

This did work and my Captivate is working great!
    Thank you!

  • IPCC 8.0: Using Unity Text to Speech functionality

I wonder if you can use the Text to Speech functionality native to Unity to read a txt file containing string from a script IPCC.
The IPCC native TTS only read certain variables but can not read variables String.

I'm not going to say it's not possible, I'm sure with lots of time, resources, and duct tape you could come up with something.  However, Unity is not really a peripheral (IVR, PBX, etc) so you're not going to be able to easily utilize it's funcationality within UCCE.

  • An error message pops up when using text to speech function in trial version

An unable to decode and import the selected wav/mp3 message
pops up when trying to use the text to speech function with the
trial version. It will let me select the voice but will not apply
    the changes or convert.
    Any suggestions??

    Hi there
I've noticed more than few posts about this since Captivate 4
    was released.
Are you by chance using Windows Vista 64 bit? Seems most that
have reported this issue have been using that version.
Please report it to Adobe as a bug.

  • Text-to-speech no longer working in any PDF apps in Mac 10.8.5.

Text-to-speech is no longer working in any PDF apps in Mac 10.8.4/5.  Does anyone know the software component that passes highlight text over to the speech synthesiser?   How is this process different in PDF's compared to any other text format?
So far I have tried Preview, Skim, PDFView, Safari, Evernote and Adobe Reader with the result: silence.  The only defference being Adobe Reader which speaks the name of the document and not the highlighted text.  I've re-applied the Mac OS10.8.5 como-update, fixed prefs, ran FSCheck and changed user.  I've tried every method of triggering the text-to-speech function (including custom scripts). Text-to-speech works perfectly in every other respect exept when working with PDF's. When Maveriks arrives I will do a clean install and rebuild my data manually which I'm pretty certain will fix the problem but it would be extremely rewarding to find an actual solution and learn something in the process.

Rawr! I got it to work, sort of. I think I tried so hard because I hated the thought of using alsa-oss. And I discovered a couple bugs in spd-conf! Does anyone care? lol
Basically, I redid my TTS-related configs & put them under ~/ instead of /usr/share, and ran "festival --server" & "speech-dispatcher -s" as a normal user. I also added myself to the "audio" group somewhere along the line, but I don't think that was the issue.
I'm almost afraid to reboot, because, although speech-dispatcher can be started at boot-time through rc.conf's DAEMONS array, I don't think festival can---at least, not in the same way as it can on distros that have the script /etc/default/festival. I'm about to see if I can track down that file, and hope I don't break everything somehow.
KTTSMgr still doesn't see any synthesizers, but I got past the "dummy module" message. Now I'm hoping I'll get some help from someone who actually knows what to do (as opposed to me).
    Take care, all
    H
P.S One small complaint: Although my speechd.conf specified port 6561, speech-dispatcher's tests showed that it was looking for a connection on port 6560 first, before scanning to find the real port. I had to change to port 6560 to stop the behaviour, even though I never customized the port number in the first place.

  • Text-to-speech not working in preview 8.0 for .pdf files !

Text-to-speech is working in every thing expect in preview after the new upgrade yosemite. Please if somebody has any remedy please let me know or I request apple to bring a new update to over come this problem.

I have found that Text-to-Speech works just fine in Yosemite's Preview application — without changing any standard settings. I added additional voices, and it works equally well with these too. You should not expect Text-to-Speech functionality with text that is incorporated into a graphic though.
Both Edit > Speech  > Start Speaking, and after enabling in Text-to-Speech Preferences, Speak selected text when the key is pressed (option+Esc).

  • Labview 5.1 text to speech

    Hello!
I would like to know the minimum version of Labview to use "text to speech" function, if there is one?
The lowest I've found is an example for Labview 6.1 to use with Microsoft SDK 5.1.
I have access to Labview 5.1 at the moment and I wonder if I have to upgrade to a higher version? If so, which version at least?
If anyone have example code for "text to speech" function it would be great if you could share it!
    Thanks!

the LV 6.1 example is just calling windows dlls.  This VI could be written in any version of LabVIEW.  I don't think that it is using anything labview specific that would prevent it from running in LV 5.1
The olny way to convert down is to do a save for previous from LV 6.1, into LV 6.0, and then from 6.0 to 5.1.  I know that this seems like a pain, but it is the only way to save it down to your version.
If you haven't seen a new version of LV since 5.1, this might be a great reason to buy LV 8.0.  The cost of the new version is less than the amount of time you'll spend finding the old versions, and saving all those VIs for a previous version.
Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Special characters like hyphens cause problems in Text to Speech on Mac

The Text to Speech function with the shortcut [option+esc] has helped me  a lot. But, the only problem is that when there is a hyphen in the paragraph selected it doesn't even start reading the paragraph.
This problem occurs when reading pdf files from the chrome using TTS.

I thought that perhaps that I might be able to do something like make the iPod screen have a white text on black mode (like in the Mac OS X accessability mode), would this be possible?
Can anyone else think of anything when using an iPod to help vision impaired people to use an iPod?

  • Speech function no longer works

I have just upgraded to Mtn Lion from Leopard and my text to speech function doesn't work - Why not? How can I fix it?

Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Test to Speech and make sure that the box for "Speak selected text..." is checked and that the proper Shift+Control+Space keys are set.
If the box is already checked, uncheck and then recheck it to reset the saved preference.

  • Need advice about text to speech

It doesn't appear that the built in text to speech functionality will do what I need it to. The voice I need for a project is the popular Steven Hawking voice. I need to to be able to speak back a script that I've written and be able to record it in some sort of audio format that I can use on the internet.
    Does anybody have any advice?
    Thanks.

Really? I don't have Snow Leopard yet, but under Leopard both Fred and Bruce (well more Fred) sound a lot like what I remember Steven Hawking sounds like. Maybe slow it down one tick below "normal."
Have they removed those voices from SL?
As for recording I think you could use SoundFlower and Audacity. Both are free -- not sure if either have been updated for SL yet....

  • When using the text to speech which vtml_speed value is the best?

When using the text to speech function along with the VTML tag for speech (<vtml_speed>) what number provides the best rate for learning. I am currently trying to use this function to improve my computor generated speech for a project. I have been getting complaints that it is too slow, yet the default setting is too fast. Any advice out there?

Hopefully nothing serious. Try a Safe Mode boot ...
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
