HT1338 Trouble Using HDMI TV as a display through Thunderbolt adaptor

I have a 13 inch Late 2011 Macbook Pro running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4. I just purchased a Belkin Thunderbolt => HDMI adapter to use my HDMI TV as a Display. However, my TV is reading No Signal when I plug everything in. What can I do to trouble shoot this?
So far I have tried updating software, plugging in and turning on both the tv and computer in every way imaginable. I have gone to displays and clicked "Detect Displays" and searched for hours on google.
Here is a link to the adaptor I am using. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Belkin-Mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI-Adapter/16685842#Produ ct+Reviews

PLEASE HELP TROUBLE SHOOT!
Thank you,
Reese

I had the same problem.  I reset the PRAM and the SMC controller, then all was well.  Google should provide instructions for resetting these.
NOTE:  I did not think of this myself, I took it to the Apple Store where a Genius did the resets.  Then I smacked my forehead, as I should have thought of this myself :-)

Can I use 2 displays when I connect a 1920x1080 display through Thunderbolt to the 27 cinema display when it´s connected to the all new 13" Mac Book Air with thunderbolt?

Thank you, I have read that I could daisy chain the HD RAID enclosure on one of the thunderbolt ports with another monitor, if the monitor were at the end of the chain, but I do not know if the other port would still simultaneously support yet another external display at the same time.

  • Using '09 iMac as Target Display via Thunderbolt Cable Fail

I have a peculiar situation that I hoping someone can decipher with certainty:
    I have a late 2009 iMac core i7, 27" running 10.9.1
I just received a Mac Pro - my plan was to use the iMac as a display for the Mac Pro at least for a while. I purchased a thunderbolt cable. I have connected the mac pro via thunderbolt cable to the mini display port on the iMac.
Unfortunately I simply cannot get CMD-F2 to work, or FN-CMD-F2 on the iMac. I have tried PRAM resets etc. The system does nothing when I hit those keys. I verified the mac pro is working via HDMI.
I am now wondering if I have the right cable. I understood thunderbolt and mini display port to be interchangeable and backward compatible so that my situation would work.
What am I missing? Thanks much, really would like to get this mac pro on screen without buying a new monitor!

I found that MDP iMac MUST use a MDP cable. Which of course is not as easy to come by as the thunderbolt which I picked up. Really annoying.

  • No external display through thunderbolt on 10.6.8

Ok so I have a 2011 MacBook Pro (8,2) and I use a mini displayport to HDMI adapter to connect to my tv or external monitor. It used to work fine (a few months ago) but now it doesn't do anything when I plug it in, but when I pull it out the screen flashes blue for a second. This is all under 10.6.8. I triple boot this machine and under 10.7 and Windows 7 the external display works fine. It also works fine with a 2009 MBP 5,5 that is running 10.6.8. The only difference I see is that the 09 MBP is actually mini displayport whereas the newer has thunderbolt and under 10.7 there was an EFI update and I think a thunderbolt update that wasn't offered under 10.6. My question is can I somehow get the external working under 10.6 with a software tweak/fix?

Thanks - this thread does address the MPEG problem but I still have no sound whatsoever on any program or the system. If I try to preview a music file in the finder with no other program open there is no sound as it won't play. iTunes just crashes when opening with this error:

  • My MacBook gets tweaky when I use the iMac as a display... suggestions?

When hooking up my MacBook Pro to my iMac (to use the iMac as a display, via Thunderbolt) it causes my MacBook to be tweaky, slow, taking too long to think, and then keeps Photoshop all the way to the right when I disconnect the iMac... any suggestions? I love using the big screen as a monitor, but need the luxury of the lap top for work (we travel a lot, and I cannot exactly tote around a giant 27' iMac...). I use Photoshop CS5 and I'm usually running it at the same time as Mail and Google Plus, but that's usually it. I have my Time Machine hooked up to back me up in case anything happens, of course, but I want the speed of the laptop even if it's hooked up to the iMac!
    Thank you!

Can the iMac work as a display the same as the Apple display?
Only if it's a 27-inch model. Other Macs require a VNC setup or ScreenRecycler, which will be much slower.

  • I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV?

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

  • Using hdmi with external display crashes mac pro

I have late 2013 model Macbook pro. I have connected it via HDMI plug to external display via hdmi bridge. The other device connected to this hdmi bridge is a pc. Everything works fine until pc enters sleep mode, and switches display off. The result is immediate crash of my mbp either with reboot, or with screen requiring me to push power button long enough. Interestingly this problem seems not to appear if I am using this 30 bucks thunderbolt hdmi adapter. I am kind of infurious that my over 2 k MBP is crashing all the time. As the full-hd display works perfectly with PC, and with this extra adapter - what is the problem with my shiny premium MBP? anything to avoid this?

An articulating VESA mount and a cheap display or this Dell would be far simpler. The iMac G4 20" had to be specially weighted to hold just a 20" panel.
This Dell in particular has a host of display connectors that Apple doesn't offer on it's panels so multiple devices can be connected simultaneously:

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Mac Mini 2012 and I want to use a new 27" Lighting Display and my old 27" Cinema Display as a second Monitor

    Evening all,
I have a Mac Mini that I have been using a 27" Cinema Display on for a couple years - works GREAT, love the Mini and that display. The Cinema Display has Power for a Laptop, USB connector and a Mini Display Port connection on it.
I am a Guitarist / Songwriter and I use Pro Tools a lot. So I thought I would invest in the new Lightning Display for my Mac Mini. I would get the extra ports for Firewire, and USB, as well as now I could "Daisy Chain" my old Cinema Display off the new Lightning Display.
WHAT A PAIN IN THE BUTT THIS HAS TURNED INTO !!!!  I have honestly spent more than 6 hours trying to find adapters or ways to make these monitors BOTH work at the same time with the Mac Mini ( you know, a Dual Monitor Setup . . .)
    HELP !!!
1 - If I could find a HDMI MALE to Mini Display Port FEMALE adapter, I would run it on the HDMI interface - apparently no such adapter exists.
2 - You apparently can NOT daisy chaine the Cinema Display off the Thunderbolt Port on the new Monitor ( silly that that does not work, but it does not )
I am really stuck here - how do I get these monitors to work as "Dual Monitors" on the Mac Mini ???
    Thanks !

The HDMI port won't work for a 27" monitor, it maxes out at 1920*1200...
Supports dual simultaneous displays -- 1920x1200 on an HDMI display or a DVI display using the included HDMI-to-DVI adapter and 2560x1600 on a Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort display or even a VGA display (with adapter). Thunderbolt is backwards-compatible with Mini DisplayPort-equipped displays as well as adapters that are compatible with Mini DisplayPort (DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI and HDMI).

  • My MacBook Pro is not able to detect Toshiba LCD TV using HDMI Cable

    Hello,
I am recently having an issue of connecting my MacBook Pro with Toshiba LCD 32 Inch i tried many troubleshooting scenarios but nothing came up on my LCD,
My Mac OS 10.6.6 with the latest updates from Apple, i tried to connect my Mac to Sony Pravia LCD Screen and it's work fine but not the case in TOSHIBA !,
Please advise me if it's something related to my TV.
    Waiting reply from technical,

    Hello Dear,
    Thanks for response,
I check the TV Manual and it's support the "Extended display identification data (EDID)" and i already connect my PS3 on the TV using HDMI Cable, but when i connect the MacBook Pro screen flashed and nothing came up on the TV and this why i am trying to understand is it Mac issue or TV one,
Please review the following i copy it from the TV Manual and advise me,
"Connecting an HDMI or a DVI device
The HDMI input on your TV receives digital audio
and uncompressed digital video from an HDMI
device and uncompressed digital video from a
    DVI device.
This input is designed to accept HDCP
programme material in digital from CEA-861-D
compliant consumer electronic devices (such as
a set top box and DVD player with HDMI and DVI
    output).
The HDMI input is designed for best performance
    with 1080i (50 Hz/60 Hz) and 1080p (24/50/60
Hz) high-definition video signals, but will also
    accept and display 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, and
    720p (50Hz/60 Hz (60 Hz: except for E-EDID))
    and VGA (VESA 640 × 480 @ 60/72/75 Hz)
    signals.
    • HDMI: High-Definition Multimedia Interface
    • DVI: Digital Video Interface
    • HDCP: High-bandwidth Digital Content
    Protection
    • CEA-861-D compliance covers the
    transmission of uncompressed digital video
    with high-bandwidth digital content protection,
which is being standardized for reception of
high-definition video signals. Because this is
an evolving technology, it is possible that some
devices may not operate properly with the TV.
    • E-EDID: Enhanced-Extended Display
    Identification
    • Acceptable PC signal format:
    S-VGA: VESA 800 5 600 @ 56/60/72/75 Hz
    XGA: VESA 1024 5 768 @ 60/70/75 Hz
    W-XGA: VESA 1280 5 768 @ 60/75 Hz
    W-XGA: VESA 1360 5 768 @ 60 Hz
    S-XGA: VESA 1280 5 1024 @ 60/75 Hz
However, these signal formats are converted to
match the number of pixels of the LCD panel.
Therefore, the TV may not display small text
    properly.
If you connect this unit to your PC, the
compressed image is displayed in S-XGA mode,
therefore the picture quality may deteriorate and
    characters may not be read.

  • Static using HDMI to DVI adapter on 2011 mini

    Hi,
I bought my first Mac last week, the i5 2.3ghz mini.  I originally set it up on my TV (using HDMI), downloaded/installed the updates, and messed around a bit before deciding that a 42 inch display isn't as convenient as I thought it would be.
Using the HDMI to DVI adapter that came with the mini I hooked it up to my 19 inch acer monitor.  While booting  can see the boot screen, but the display is very staticy.  Once it logged in I was able to barely see well enough past the static to mess around with the display settings thinking that maybe the mini was trying to push an unsupported resolution to my monitor (because I set it up on my TV at 1080p).
I read up on the issue and it seems that some have had problems with static while waking up from sleep.  Mine has static all the time.
By a stroke of luck I happened to have a HDMI to DVI cable on hand.  I tried it out and it displayed beautifully.  No static, works as I expected.
So the problem seems to be the adapter that came with the mini, the DVI cable that I was originally using (the cable works with my PC), or the HDMI port on the mini itself not working well with Apple's own adapter (not likely).
I was just wondering if anybody else has had this issue, and if they fixed it did it end up being the adapter or did replacing the DVI cable with a higher quality cable do the trick.
    Thanks,
    Corey

I just posted a similar issue here. The weird thing is that on my system, a Dell monitor works with the HDMI-DVI adapter but the Acer monitor doesn't. Do you think getting another adapter would resolve it fo rme? What kind worked for you?
