HT1338 What do I need to do to upgrade my operating system OX 10.6.8 to the latest version?

I'm trying to install a Norton Antivirus software, but it requires that I have an operating system that is OX 10.7 or higher.  How can I upgrade my version of mac to OX 10.7?

As an aside, Norton has a pretty miserable reputation on macs, but maybe that's on older versions. Some companies require Norton today, however.
That said, if your iMac has an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU (click the apple on the left of the menu bar and about this mac) and 2GB of memory (4GB is recommended), you can upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion.  If your iMac is a mid-2007 or newer system, you can upgrade to the current OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. You don't need to install OS X 10.7 Lion as an intermediate step to Mountain Lion, you can go directly from where you are today at OS X 10.6.8 to OS X 10.8 via the App store.
If you do want to go to Lion, you'll need to call the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE to buy it. They will email you a code that you use in the App store to download it.
Also, you may know that both Lion and Mountain Lion dropped emulated Power PC support, so programs like Office 2004 will no longer work (newer versions of Office are OK).

What do I need to do to upgrade to a 10.6? I have a Mac OSx version 10.5.8

Giving just the basics, first you need to confirm that your iMac will run 10.6. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Then you need to confirm that your applications and peripherals will run under 10.6 or that they can be upgraded to do so.
Finally, you need to purchase a retail copy of 10.6. See:

  • After I upgrade to Mav. will I need to pay to upgrade Pages, Numbers, iPhoto etc. again. I have the older versions.

After I upgrade to Mav. will I need to pay to upgrade Pages, Numbers, iPhoto etc. again. I have the older versions.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It depends on the iLife (iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand) and iWork (Pages, Numbers and Keynote) versions you have.
If you have got iLife '11 and iWork '09, you will be able to update the applications for free, but if you have got an older version, you will have to pay for them in the App Store

  • Icloud settings say i need to upgrade iphoto on my macbook, but i already have the latest version.

i have a 4S and macbook pro running together on my network.  im able to sync via wifi, and i'm pretty sure my phone is sending things to icloud, but i can't activate photo stream on the macbook.  when i try to turn it on in icloud settings, the option is disabled and i get a message saying install the latest version of iphoto.  when i try to buy it from the app store, it says i already have the latest version.  help?

Would checking the "copy to iPhoto" box and then reimporting do it or will I end up with two copies of the same photos?
You'll end up with two copies and only one will have Faces attached.
The external drive is a MyBookLive, which my Mac says is formatted for Mac. It doesn't seem to be creating any issues.
What does Disk Utility report the format as?
As I'm using a MacBook Air that doesn't have an ethernet connection, I have no choice but to import over my wireless network.
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
My biggest issue at the moment is how do I copy the photos into iPhoto without having to start the process all over again.
    Worth a try:
Check the box at the iPhoto Preferences: then
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I have pages '9 - I have not upgraded to Mavrickes but need to be able to open up pages docs that are made in the latest version. It seems hard or inpossible to create compatable files forearlier versions. Is this true?

I have a client who has the latest pages. They are telling me that they can't create a compatible file for earlier versions ('9). I have not upgraded to mavrickes and cannot downlosd the latest version of pages. Is this true...the latest isn't compatable with earlier versions?

    That's clients for you:

  • HT1338 how to upgrade mac os x 10.4 to the latest version?

how and what do i need to upgrade my mac OS X 10.4.11 to the latest version?

You must have an Intel Mac to start. If it's a Core Duo model with 1 GB or RAM or more, then you can upgrade to Snow Leopard only. If it's a Core 2 Duo with at least 2 GBs of RAM installed, then you can upgrade at least to Lion and possibly to Mountain Lion.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Hi! I can't upgrade my iTunes 10.3.1.55 on my Windows XP 2002 SP3 to the latest version of iTunes. Got the message: "A problem has occured with the Windows Installer-package. A program needed for this installation could not be run." What to do?

Hi! I can't upgrade my iTunes 10.3.1.55 on my Windows XP 2002 SP3 to the latest version of iTunes. Got the message: "A problem has occured with the Windows Installer-package. A program needed for this installation could not be run." What to do?

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

  • Pages is telling me that I need a newer version before I can open my document.  I have the latest version and I am able to open older versions.  Whats up?

Pages is telling me that I need a newer version before I can open my document.  I have the latest version and I am able to open older versions.  Whats up?

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

If it's in recovery mode, the data is already gone. Why did you never back up your important data?

If you run into the "another installation" message even after the reboot of the PC (which is an excellent idea by HTP ProXy), reregistering your Windows Installer Service is worth a try.
First, launch a command prompt as an administrator. In your Start search, type cmd then right-click on the cmd that comes up and select "Run as administrator".
    At the command prompt:
Type %windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /unregister and hit enter.
Type %windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /unregister and hit enter.
Type %windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver and hit enter.
Type %windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /regserver and hit enter.
Restart the PC and try another reinstalll.

okay from reading posts it seems if I transfer my backed up info from my old comp to the new one and erase my dad's phone's back up i could reset my phone and it would transfer all my old data back onto the phone, be linked to the new computer and i could proceed.  Where do i find the backed up info from my phone?

  • HT1338 Can anyone tell me how to find what OS I'm using on the Mac? Tiger or Leopard? Also, how do I update from 10.6.8 to the latest version?

Can anyone tell me how to find what OS I'm using on the Mac?
    Tiger or Leopard?
Also, how do I update from 10.6.8 to the latest version?

Go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac". You will get a window similar to this one -
You current OS X version number will be shown as I've marked.
OS X 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard, 10.7.x is Lion, and 10.8.x is Mountain Lion.
Whether or not you can go to the latest OS X version depends upon your hardware -
You will need to purchase the retail set for the OS X version you want; there is no pint in getting and installing any intermediate versions. Once the retail version has been installed, you can update it to the latest release for that version via download updater.

  • I deleted my version of Adobe Flash Player for the latest version and then it wouldn't install. Now I have no version and need advice as to trying to install an older version or what?

Since the latest version of Adobe Flash Player wouldn't install after deleting the version I had that did work, should I try to install an older version?
I just checked in the control panel and my add/remove programs and listed is Adobe Flash Player Active X, version 11.1.102.55. But when I tried to view a video I could not and got a message saying I needed Adobe Flash Player. Now I'm really confused?????

    Hi,
What does "still won't work" mean?  Flash Player 10.3.183.90 is very old.  You might find that many sites require a newer version of Flash Player to view content, perhaps this is what you mean by "still won't work".   Depending on your system, you may be able to upgrade to OS X 10.6 which will enable you to install the newest version of Flash Player.  There's lots of information on this on the internet.  Just search for "upgrade OS X 10.5.8 to 10.6" or similar.

Restore it using the computer it normally syncs with, this should not require an iOS update.
