HT1338 Which version of Mac OS should I update to from v10.5.8?

I am trying to install applications that require the 10.6 and above and not sure if I should install that or go to 10.7 or 10.8 so need guidance.  What should I do next??

Hello,
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
General requirements
   * Mac computer with an Intel processor
    * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
    * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    * DVD drive for installation
    * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
    * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It's been pulled from the online store & Apple Stores, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard.

Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Final cut pro version 4.0.1 is supported on which version of Mac

    I want to know
final cut pro version 4.0.1 is supported on which version of Mac.
Which compressor should I use with this Final Cut Pro version.

FCP 4.0 was the most unstable version of FCP out there. I highly recommend not using it. SO much wrong with it that I can't list it all. BUT, it only supported DV and offline RT (low res format), and then uncompressed SD and Uncompressed HD (need supporting hardware). It ran on Mac OS 10.2 and 10.3...last supported OS was 10.3. It didn't come with Compressor. Compressor was made years after that version of FCP.

  • Which Version of Windows 7 Should I use?

I hve a fairly new Macbook Pro. Mid 2012 Version just before the new display came out. My question is, which version of Windows 7 should I use? I've noticed that I can purchase either the 32Bit or 64Bit version, but I am not sure and don't want to load something that might be bigger than I need. I'll only be using Windows to run The Sims 3. This means over 9 expansion packs+ and their EA store content.
Here is what I am running on my mac:
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro9,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i5
      Processor Speed:          2.5 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          2
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP91.00D3.B08
      SMC Version (system):          2.2f38
      Serial Number (system):          C1MHN1TNDTY3
      Hardware UUID:          8CCE66F6-C4B6-5EDB-9CE7-FFB43E25F89D
      Sudden Motion Sensor:
      State:          Enabled
As you can tell this isn't a higher end Macbook Pro, as it was a gift, but I am unable to play the game without it crashing since they do not have an updated patch for Mac users - and it is very unlikely that they will even care to update the patch. This seems to be the only guarenteed fix. I appreciate any help I can get, I just need responses soon so I can take advantage of the low prices for Windows 7 before they run out.

Microsoft will be supporting Windows 7 with full updates for another two years, so you won't have to worry about supplies running out any time soon.

  • Which version of MAC OS do I need?

I have a MacBook Pro with a blank hard drive, which version of Mac OS do I need for a new full install? I've never used a Mac before so I'm a bit lost on which one I need to buy
    Thanks

That all depends on what model/vintage of Macbook Pro you have.
There is only one version of OS X available on the Apple web App Store and that is Snow Leopard. this may or may not be the correct version for your MBP.
Just how dod you come by a MBP with a blank hard drive?
Even if the drive is blank you may still be able to boot the system using the D key at startup (as long as you have a ethernet cable connected to the Mac). Using the D key will do 1 of 2 things.
    1) boot the computer from the Apple hardware test website.
    2) boot into the internet recovery website at Apple to install OS X Lion.
Both need a internet connection to work.

  • How to tell which version of Mac OS X is installed?

I'm not sure this is the best category for this question but I wasn't sure which area would be the best.
Let's say I have a hard drive attached to my mac (via firewire or usb) and I want to ascertain what version of Mac OS X is installed on it. Is there some way I can look directly into the files to tell? I realize I could look at System Preferences-> Startup Disk. But let's say there is an early version of Mac OS X on the drive and it doesn't show up in the Preference Pane because it wont boot that particular machine.
I hope I haven't made this question more obtuse than it needs to be.
    Thanks.

If you open /System/Library/CoreServices, you'll find the Finder app. Get info on it and it will be close to the System version. There might be somewhere on the Web that cross-references the Finder version to the OS version.

  • Finding which version of OS X should I use for my old MacBook black

I have an old MacBook (black4,1) 2.4 GHz Inter Core 2 Duo; 4GB memory.
I had to format it, so it is currently running on OS X 10.5.8. I would like to upgrade the Operating system to the latest version that fits this specific machine.
At home a new iMac running on OS X 10.9.2, so I would like to at least be able to sync the basics over iCloud.
Any clues on which version of OS X could/should I use?
    Thanks a lot.
    Matias

It appears you can upgrade to Lion.
    Computer Compatibility - Lion                       Lion
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
You will need to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6) to download Lion.
    Snow Leopard Purchase
There is limited iCloud capability in 10.6, although it isn't supposed to support iCloud.
Mountain Lion/Mavericks require a MacBook model 5.1 or higher.

  • Which version of Management Agent should I get?

    Hi everyone,
I have a problem here. I just tried to install OEM Grid Control 10.2.0.2 following an on line tutorial
The installation failed during the Agent Configuration Assistant because I was not aware the installation needs the Management agent, which had to be downloaded separately.
My question is, which version of the Management agent should I download, knowing that after installing the Grid Control 10.2.0.2, I want to upgrade it to the 10.2.0.4 version.
Should I get directly get the 10.2.0.4 agent to install Grid Control or should I get the 10.2.0.2 version of the Management agent first and THEN update it to 10.2.0.4?
If you did not get lost in my explanations, I would gladly appreciate any help or advice :)
    Thank you in advance,
    Olivier
