HT1339 My sons ipod classic has the music no longer has a menu!

My son's ipod classic is completely blank and yet when I put it on to charge up it plays the music but you cannot select etc because there is no menu.  I connected it to my mac and tried to restore it but it says it could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1418).  Can anyone help me or is it now useless?

Are you saying that the iPod only shows a white screen? If so, that's usually a good indication that the LCD display may be damaged.  However, it could be a glitch of some sort.  Have you tried a hard reset yet?  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
If still no luck, we'll try to restore it. Have you seen this article yet related to the 1418 error?
iPod: Cannot restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439
Sometimes a low level reformat of the iPod's hard disk resolves the issue. See this article for instructions on how to do this.

  • I recently restored my ipod classic and the music that was in my itunes account has disappeared or it keeps saying file not found,is there a way forme to recover the music I lost?

How can I fix this problem of finding the music that was lost since I restored my ipod classic. I still have some albums but some music is missing,

    Hello lg3hree
Check out the first article to look on your computer for the music files themselves. If you had purchased anything from iTunes, you can just download the tracks from the iTunes store.

  • HT1345 Is it possible to play a Playlist one has created on an iPod Classic while the iPod is docked?

Is it possible to select and play a Playlist one has created on an iPod Classic through the system on which the iPod is docked?

No, but if you are in the habit of listening to your iPod in Shuffle mode, then set the language files to Skip when shuffling.
To set Skip when shuffling, highlight the track in your iTunes Library and click on File/Get Info/Options>Skip when shuffling and then Sync the iPod to the Library.
Note that if you select a single track, the Skip when shuffling is a tick-box. But if you select multiple items, the Skip when shuffling option becomes a drop-down menu where you choose either Yes or No. Even if that option says Yes, change it to No and back to Yes. This ensuures that all tracks you have highlighted are set to Yes.
Another option is to create a separate Playlist that includes everything except the language files. This will require you to manually add any new songs each and every time you buy new songs.
    Alternatively;
you could even create a Smart Playlist to automatically add all the new music but to exclude the language files. To do that, set the Genre of the language files to "Language" (or similar) and then:
Make sure you are looking at your entire Music Library, not just one part of it or a Playlist.
    Click on File/New Smart Playlist
In the line that appears, change "Artist" to Media Kind (from the drop-down menu)
The next two boxes should now show is and Music. If not, change them so that they do.
Click on the + box at the end of that line (this will add a new line)
Change "Artist" to Genre (from the drop-down menu)
Change "Contains" to is not (from the drop-down menu)
In the last (empty) box, type in Language or whatever genre you have given to the language files. Make sure it is typed in exactly as it is in the files.
    Click OK
Rename the Smart Playlist as you want.
    Sync the iPod with iTunes.
Note that this Smart Playlist will automatically add any new music to it. You do not need to add new songs yourself!

  • Is it worth getting an ipod classic over the new ipod touch if i'm mainly into music?

hey, i'm contemplating whether to get a classic or a touch. i have ~20 GB of music which will fit in both devices. which one should i get?

It's really a matter of your own personal choice.
The 160GB iPod Classic and the 32GB 4th gen Touch are the same price. A 32GB 5th gen Touch however, will cost you slightly more.
The iPod Touch is more fun once you start using the Apps. (And they're often useful Apps too!)
The iPod Classic will have greater capacity as your music collection becomes larger. Although you currently only have 20GB, one assumes that your collection will continue to grow. Don't forget that Apps take up space too. My Apps use 4.3GB.
The iPod Touch is "cooler" than a Classic
The Classic is unlikely to be a good choice for use while jogging. (It has a hard drive which will skip as it is being constantly moved about during jogging.)
So, for and against for each. It really is your choice.

I have an IPOD Classic with purchased music and I want to sync it with a different PC but I get the message your device is synced with another PC.  How do I resolve this issue? I don't have the previous PC.

On that PC, launch iTunes. From the menu bar top of your screen click Store / Authorize This Computer.

  • Has my iPod Classic bit the dust?

I tried to plug my 80gb iPod Classic into the iPod jack on my elliptical for the first time today and when I did, it froze.  I tried to do the reset (toggle Hold switch, hold center and menu buttons simultaneously) and the screen went black and has been that way since.  I've tried all 3 USB ports on my laptop, the USB port on a different computer, plugged it into the wall, and nothing.  I tried plugging it into the computer and holding the center and menu buttons for iTunes to recognize it, and it gives me an error message saying that the restore failed (Error 2005 initially, now it is saying Error 1604) and gives me the option to send a report to Apple, which I've done, not that it'll help.
Is it worth stressing over/trying to fix it, or is it likely a goner?

If the "black dot" is on the LCD (the screen itself), I think it would be visible whether the backlight is ON or not.  And it may get worse.  If it's a blemish on the surface of the iPod over the screen area (not the LCD), which may be the case if it's not as noticeable with the backlight ON,  it will probably not get worse.

  • I downloaded my sons ipod 4g to the new iOS and now when we try to sync it says we have no space, but there is nothing but a few apps on his ipod.  I've tried to reset but that didn't help the problem.  What can I do?

I downloaded my sons ipod 5g with the latest iOS and now when we try to sync it says we have no space, but there is nothing but a few apps on his ipod and he has plenty of space.  The messege says that most of is space is taken up by video but there is no video or music on his ipod right now.  I've tried to reset his ipod but that did not help the problem. What can I do?

  • Songs/albums on ipod classic invisible on music sync page, can't remove

I noticed that my ipod classic 160gb running 2.0.4 has songs on it that appear when looking at "music" from the left pane of itunes, but when I look at the sync page under the music tab, the albums do not show in the "albums" list. I'm manually syncing music so I use the checkboxes under genre, album, artist to manage what's on the ipod.
There is no way I can see for me to remove any of the songs since the only place they are visible is on the grayed out music list page. They don't appear under "manually added songs", the albums aren't listed in the "albums" window, they don't appear in "artist" list. It's like itunes thinks they aren't on the ipod from the sync screen.
The albums all show up in the itunes music library, in the music window on the ipod, and I can see them from the ipod menu.
This seems like an itunes bug but I can't find anything on the forums about it. Can anyone help?
    ipod is running 2.0.2
    itunes 10.1.2
    mac osx 10.6.3

    Try this:
Use the click wheel on the ipod
Go to the Menu  >>   scroll through the Settings  >>  on my iPod nano 3 gen I can change the settings for Shuffle  & Repeat  >>  On or Off. Skip is not available.
May be on your iPod in the menu you could change the Skip  >>  On or Off.

  • My question is, when i bought my sons ipod I created the account with my email, the I purchased an ipod as well and used to same account.  I want him to have his own account so he can't access my itunes money.

My question is, when I bought my sons ipod I created the account with my emai, then I purchased an ipod as well, so we share an account.  I want him off of my account.  How do you do that, he has his own computer.

His own password for what? You can only have one password for one account.
He can use your account for items and he can also use his own account. To purchase items with a different account you go to Settings>Store and sign out and sign into the other account.
To update apps you have to sign into the account the purchased them.

    Hi jdog44,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  iTunes Radio should be accessible from the bottom of the Music app screen as shown in this article:
    About iTunes Radio
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5848
You could try completely closing the Music app:
iOS: Force an app to close

  • Does the latest Ipod Classic use the same charging pins as the earlier versions?

Does the latest Ipod Classic use the same charging pin positons as the earlier versions as I want to use it in my Audi where my 5th gen Nano will play but not charge as the pin configuration for charging changed from that of the earlier models.

If your 5th gen nano doesn't change, then a new iPod Classic will not either.
The "change" was that older iPods used firewire to charge the iPod. But that's 12volts (the same voltage as a car's battery). Then along came charging by USB, which is 5volts. So car manufacturers who were on the ball, introduced electronics to drop the 12v car battery voltage to 5v and put that 5v on the appropriate USB pins. (I would hope, that by now, every car manufacturer has sorted this out, but of course that doesn't help anyone with an older model car.)
The incredibly obvious - to anyone with technical knowledge - was that one day, Apple would stop the 12v charging method on newer models of iPod. But somehow, a lot of manufacturers of devices that charge iPods failed to see this. (It really was incredibly obvious, believe me!)
It wasn't just car manufacturers who were caught out by this, so were Docking Station devices. I know of one make, where the manufacturer recalled the ones still in shops so that they could re-work them to charge using the 5v USB pins.
In my car, made around 2006, I had an external device fitted so that I could plug my iPod into the car stereo through the Dock Connector. But hey, guess what? That device will charge my iPod Classic, but not my iPod Touch.
A long-ish answer, but hopefully it not only answers the question, but tells you why too.

  • TS1382 I have a new computer, how do I sync my Ipod Classic to the new computer

I have a new Dell computer, how do I sync my Ipod Classic to the new computer

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.
Or better yet, if you still have access to the old computer, use one of the method described in this article copy everything from the old PC to the new one.
