My ipod says no volume available and therefore I have no sound in the earphones or thru an aux cable.

- Have you tried a reset. Nothings will be lost.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Do the speakers work?
- Have yo tried another pair of headphones?

You havn't got notifications muted have you ? Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to notifications can be muted either by the switch on the right-hand side of the iPad or via the taskbar (whatever the switch is set to control, the other function is controlled via the left end of the taskbar). Setesh, See if both computer has the same version of iTunes, if both are the same, then it is your PC, that has plug-ins which is in conflict it iTunes. ( normally it is the Antivirus or some plug-ins to beautify your screen)
If it is different, most likely the other PC has an older version of iTunes, so you should downgrade your iTunes to that older version, which your iPod interface well with.
Other probable causes,
you are using the USB 1.1 port at the front of your PC, and not the USB2,0 port at the back of your PC. so switch to the back.
Dont use any other USB devices, when you are syncing the iPod.
Dont use any USH Hub.

Look the dock connector on your iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corred contacts, foreign material and cracked/broken plastic.
Try:
- A reset. Nothing is lost

I hope you bought this from a store, you can return it and get your money back. BUT if you bought from a person off the street or off the net, someone you don't know... I'm thinking you just got screwed! And are out the money and have an expensive paper weight. I hope I'm wrong, but I think you have a stolen iPod. If you can find the person that sold it to you return it and get your money back, but I'm thinking they are long gone. If you can not find the person report it to the police and turn it over.
