My itunes library files are locked, on a locked disc, how can I unlock them?

Huh?
Your iTunes library is on your home computer.   That is strictly under control of someone in your house.
Your iTunes account, which can be accessed with your Apple ID and password can be disabled by Apple.    Is this what you mean?

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk?

I have my iTunes library on an Netgear NAS.  I have seen this happen when iTunes is Force Quit or the system crashes and the machine restarts, trying to start iTunes again.  The following procedure clears the problem for me...
Unmount the volume containing the iTunes library.
restart the NAS (or machine hosting the remote volume).
Remount the volumes containing the iTunes library.
    restart iTunes.
iTunes will start and popup a dialog indicating it is checking the library.
    iTunes start is successful.
This is possibly due to inconsistencies between AFP or SMB implementations of the two devices (your Mac's OS and the remote device's firmware or OS), or it could just be a flaw in the AFP or SMB protocols.
If your iTunes library is on an NAS or network volume this may work for you.

  • "iTunes library file is locked" message

When I try opening iTunes, I get the message:
"iTunes library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file" message. This is a new thing - I've been using iTunes fine since buying the mac, 18 months ago. Can anybody help?
    Many thanks

Dear M, thanks so much for your advice on my query. It worked briefly when I tried it the first of your two suggested ways, but then the 'file is locked' message came back, so I tried your next suggestion of copying an alias of itunes icon onto the desktop etc. Lo and behold it worked (at least, so far). Now I've just got to find out why my ipod isn't charging from the dock (in fact, it drains it!) So I'll go and put that on the board now...
    A big thanks once again

  • Trying to back up iPad to external hard drive, "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."

This issue is somewhat complex so I will try to explain it as clearly as I can. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
It all began when I kept getting popups from my iPad saying that I had not backed up since May. I realized that was pretty dangerous so I decided to finally try syncing it to iTunes, though I had avoided doing so for so long because I knew that when I tried there was no room on the computer. I then remembered that I have an external hard drive with plenty of storage space, so I got that out and set it up with a folder to move iTunes and the backup into.
On iTunes I went to the Advanced Preferences and changed iTunes Media Folder Location to the G: folder, with the keep organized box checked. I also copied the previous backups from the original C: drive to G: so that I could delete the ones on C:.
I used Junction Link Magic to link my now empty MobileSync backup on C: to a new (JLM would not work unless it was empty) backup folder on external hard drive G:.
I plugged in my iPad to iTunes to sync it, and while it was backing up I checked the new folder on G: to make sure that the backup was being put there. It was.
However, about halfway through I got the message "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."
My question is Why? If it is being made in a 1.5 terabyte hard drive now, and not the computer, why is there no disk space? My guess is that it must still somehow be saving to the computer. But how? And how can I get it to save solely on the G: drive where there is enough room?
I am running Windows XP and the latest version of iTunes.
An additional but not as crucial issue:
Much of my music has been lost, with the being displayed next to the songs in the iTunes library, and only 50 (purchased) songs remain on my iPad. This was because those missing songs were stored on a different external hard drive ( I:). However, I copied many of the music folders on I: over to G: so that everything could be together. I am wondering if it is possible for me to get these songs back onto my iPad. But this is not my most important issue right now, because I believe that once I get the first issue solved I can simply plug in I: and G: at the same time while syncing the iPad, and get the songs back.
Note: I have come to realize the iTunes program itself is still under Program Files in the C: drive. Does this have to do with anything?

Short term, free up some disk space. Long term, move the library to a bigger drive.

  • ITunes Library File Cannot be Saved. The Disk Cannot be Read From . . .

I use a MacBook Pro with a healthy battery. My iTunes songs are on a USB drive. The Database and XML files are on my MacBook. Power went out in my house and the USB drive shut off. The MacBook stayed up and running. Power came back, powered on the USB drive, open iTunes, and bang: This sorry error: iTunes Library File Cannot be Saved. The Disk Cannot be Read From or Written to.
The disks are healthy, did an fsck and ran disk verify/repair. No problems. Restart iTunes, same error. Obviously a corrupted Databse file. This wouldn't be a big deal if only the XML info would be useful and actually restore critical info such as play count and dates which is essential for the Not-So-Smart Playlist dependencies to work.
This is the third time I've been burned with corrupted iTunes "Database" files. I use "Database" in quotes because a true Database wouldn't crap out like this. It would be recoverable. It would understand a simple SQL "Where" statement. It would have a maintenance script and some means for recoverable backup beyond the lame process of copying the XML file. Or it would at least read in the info the XML file.
I am becoming disillusioned with iTunes and I'm beginning to yearn for my old Linux box running GTKPod which never failed me....

OK, here's an update - After doing the restore as mentioned having everything seemingly work, I erroniously downloaded the iTunes 7.4 & 7.4.1 updates. Now, about 80% of library is non-responsive, ie: shows up in iTunes, but clicking to play does nothing at all. the other 20% of my library plays, but it's not the song it is supposed to be playing. For example, clicking on a song from say, ABBA prodes a wonderful Gorillaz track :-/ (The same Gorillaz track which will not play if I select it...)
I reiterate: WE NEED A MEANS TO BACKUP OUR LIBRARIES RELIABLY!!!!!!!!!!

  • The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. The disk could not be read from...

    Screenshot of error message: http://i49.tinypic.com/2ecp3sw.jpg
I tried deleting my library file and starting over with a new library, reimporting my music. Then, once again, I get this message:
"The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. The disk could not be read from or written to." with a checkbox that asks if I would like not to be warned of this again.
    Information that might be relevant:
My iTunes files (everything but the application file) is located on my external HD (formatted for mac and has only been used on macs) and is connected via USB.
The external HD makes noises whenever it tries to save the library file, so it's obviously trying to write to the HD.
The iTunes folder creates a temporary file every single time this happens, but it is gone once the error comes up.
None of this happened (after reimporting my music to the new library) until I turned Genius on. Turning Genius off and deleting the Genius file hasn't stopped it, either.

    ok--same scenario but
Running Disk Utility says:  Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Trying to drag-drop the iTunes library folder from the ext HD to the internal MacBookPro HD gets: "The Finder can’t complete the operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."
DiskWarrior was able to access the drive and created a preview drive, but said:
DiskWarrior has successfully built a new directory for the disk named "My Book." The new directory cannot replace the original directory because of a disk malfunction.!   It is highly recommended that you backup all of your data from the preview disk.!   But when I try to transfer (off either the MyBook HD or the DW preview version of MyBook I get:  The operation can’t be completed because the item “xyz” is in use.

  • The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. The disk cannot be found.

    Hi,
Just curious if anyone knows what this iTunes error message means:
+The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. The disk cannot be found.+
I am attempting to play music from my library located on the a Lacie 1TB NAS, which allows me to play our iTunes library from either the iMac or MacBook.
Let me know if there's any further info needed on my set up to help answer my query.
    Cheers

I'm getting the same error on the Mini with SL. Also a similar setup with the library on an external drive.
Music plays okay, but the message keeps popping up.
Some artwork has gone missing as well, which is a bit random too.
    Any ideas?

  • "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."

Trying to back up iPad to NAS, "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full." I already changed my iTunes settings which now points to my NAS. In ~/Library/Application Solution/MobileSync/Backup I created an Alias which points to the NAS. What else can I do to backup my iPad to my computer? I'm a newbie on OSX but have lots of experience on Windows systems. I always believed Apple OSX is easy to handle but iTunes seems to has it's own "will".

No suggestions? I'm wondering and a bit disappointed that no one has comments to this. Is it so difficult with OSX? Comments appreciated.

i am trying to reinstall my OS X Mavericks thru OS X Utilities under command R, however Recovery HD is locked. How can I unlock it? Thank you.

Are you able to do this:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If not then you need to do this:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
