HT1349 Newly installed Mac Mini legally upgraded to Mountain Lion is unstable

Newly installed Mac Mini legally upgraded to Mountain Lion is unstable 2.4Gh Dual, 8Gb RAM. Had to repeat initial install three times, then would not shut down. Reinstalled, seemed better, kernel panics happening and restarting, removed 3rd party devices. Zapped PRAM and fixed file permissions.
Any ideas welcome.

First, you cannot do this if you have a Boot Camp partition.
    Second: Create a new partition.
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
    Third: Install Snow Leopard.
Boot from your Snow Leopard DVD. Follow instructions for installation being sure that before you actually install Snow Leopard you have selected the new partition as your target destination.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
          appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

Hard drive packed up, but had Time Machine backup. I installed new ssd and upgraded to Mountain Lion, but I can't find iPhoto library and photos or iTunes songs? Is there an answer to this?  A backup run did not install either photos or songs. Graham

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • How many macs can i upgrade to mountain lion if i used the free upgrade program

I recently bought a macbook air and received the free upgrade to mountain lion. Will i be able to just simply go to my app store account on another macbook (macbook pro snow leopard) and upgrade that to mountain lion as well?

sorry to drag this on, your answers were great i kinda forgot to clicked the "this solved my question" thing.. but is there a limit on the number of computers i can download it for free to?
Not to muddy the waters but according to the license agreement here: http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/OSX108.pdf, Apple distinguishes between a "Preinstalled and Single-Copy Apple Software License" and a "Mac App Store License." The Preinstalled license limits use of the installer to one copy on one Apple-branded computer. The Mac App Store License allows the installation of "one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running OS X Lion or OS X Snow Leopard (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control." Since in either case, the free upgrade is going to be coming from the Mac App Store it would seem that the Mac App Store License applies. But since the intent of the free upgrade is to serve as an inducement to buy a computer with a soon to be replaced OS by offering a free upgrade of the OS preinstalled on the purchased computer, perhaps it is covered by the Preinstalled wording. The Terms and Conditions of the upgrade program are unclear on that but maybe it becomes a matter of how the content code that's issued works. If the content code can be used more than once with your Mac App Store account or if the Mountain Lion installer appears as available for installation when you log into your Mac App Store account on a Mac different from the one that qualified you for the upgrade, then it would seem that the Mac App Store License is what applies here. Of course I'm no lawyer; if I was, I'm sure it would be even more complicated.

  • Error -1202 in iTunes for Mac SOLVED with upgrade to Mountain Lion

I recently had lots of trouble with iTunes and error -1202; my summary to Apple support is excerpted below.  Turns out the problem has gone away after updating my OS from Lion to Mountain Lion.  I still don't know what -1202 is, but the problem's gone.  Sympathies to those whose machines can't upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Here's what I wrote to Apple:
I'm having difficulty connecting to the iTunes Store.  When I click on virtually any link in the store, a popup window comes up stating "We could not complete your iTunes store request.  An unknown error occurred (-1202).  There was an error in the iTunes Store.  Please try again later."
I'm using a MacBook Air purchased new at the beginning of this year.  OSX 10.7.5.  I've had the same result trying to get at the Store with this machine from different sites (i.e. work and home).  I'm able to use my wife's Mac (we share the same account on two machines) to access the store without difficulty.  I can purchase something on her Mac and download it to my MacBook Air, but I can't make the purchase--or even navigate in the Store--with my machine.  I've confirmed that the time on my machine is correct, and all the billing information for the account is up to date.  I thought I'd wait to contact you until I had a chance to update iTunes, but the problem persists with iTunes 11.  I've found many references to the -1202 error in the Apple website's discussion area, but none of them have solutions.
Then in follow up to Apple:
I am still having difficulties, and I think I've identified a larger issue.  I can't use my machine to navigate the iTunes store with my Apple ID, and I can't use that same Apple ID to access the App Store, FaceTime, or photo ordering in iPhoto.
I mentioned in my first email to you that my wife's MacBook Pro uses the same Apple ID, and we can use her computer to do all of the functions that the other machine can't:  I can get to FaceTime, the iTunes Store, the App Store, and photo ordering in iPhoto.
I also created a completely new Apple ID, which has been OK'd by the AppleID website, and it doesn't work on my machine, either.
To summarize:  I know the Apple ID works, but there's something about my computer that isn't using it correctly.

You can use the balance of a redeemed iTunes gift card to purchase Mountain Lion.
Keep in mind of any applicable taxes and or fees that may be added to the purchase price.

  • Lost use of word for mac 2004 when upgraded to mountain lion OSX

IVe just upgraded to Mountain Lion OSX and lost use of word for Mac 2004. how can i get in to work again

Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • I just bought my Mac Mini today, shouldn't Mountain Lion come with it?

I just bought a new Mac Mini 8-24-12.  Shouldn't it have come with Mountain Lion installed?  And if not, do I qualify for a free upgrade?

  • I'm struggling to install Logic Pro 9 upgrade on Mountain Lion

Way back we bought one of the last pre-Intel G5 in order to do music processing. We also bought Logic Studio v6 or 7. Then we upgraded to Logic Studio 8 and later decided to use a macbook pro instead of the G5. So far so good. We then upgraded to Logic Pro 9 and can run this on Lion on the Macbook Pro.
My partner is now working away and takes his Macbook with him, so we want to set-up Logic 9 on my macbook pro which is running Mountain Lion 10.8.4. Once this is done we will take it off his machine, so not pirating in any way.
I have managed (at great length) to install Logic Studio 8 on my machine using Pacifist, and I can open it and create projects etc... I now want to install Logic Pro 9 on this machine but I get a message saying that a qualifying copy of Logic or MainStage was not found on the disk. To complicate matters, we can't find either the logic pro 9 disk or an image copy, so I downloaded from the following link:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2972851/logic-downloads-fixed.html
which I found in this thread:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4948612
I have already spent many many hours fiddling with this, does anyone know how I can get around this problem?

Im using LPX and have found it to work well.... and no less stable than LP9 in terms of general stability. There are some bugs but given we are still in the early stages of development, that is not surprising and is no different to how it was with LP8 and 9 in their early days. I should add I haven't come across any "showstopper" bugs that affect my own personalo workflow and method of using Logic... just a few niggles and minor annoyances... that for the most part can be worked around if they haven't already been fixed in the 3 updates that have come out since initial release.
I have had no real issues with importing LP9 projects into LPX other than of course, the lack of 32bit Plugin support in LPX which means LP9 projects that contain 32bit plugins.. will not fully import into LPX. The midi/audio data imports ok.. the 32bit plugins will be missing however... if you don't have equivilant 64bit versions installed. For me, this issue has been very minimal simply because almsot all the plugins i use, have already been updated to 64bit versions over the last few years.
There has also been an issue with certain parameters in the track/region Inspector after import into LPX, containing weird values.. I have only had this issue once out of maybe 40+ LP9 Projects and in this one case i simply reset the values and all was well. Other users have reported different levels of how often this occurs.
Note: Once a project has been opened and then resaved in LPX the LPX version cannot be opened in LP9 as project compatibility is only backwards and not forwards.
If you cannot find your disk and serial..(which you will also need)  Contact Apple as they may be able to provide you with replacements disks if they have any left. Bear in mind if, as it appears, your LP9 is an upgrade from LP8 you will also need your previous LP8 serial as well as your upgrade LP9 serial to properly install Logic on a new Mac. Once installed you can and in fact must... then update LP9 to 9.1.8 via software updates in LIon or Mountain LIon... for Logic to under those OS versions.

  • Mac mini and os x mountain lion help

hi i want to buy mac mini 2011 with lion server this week so when os x mountain lion is relesed will i be able to upgrade my os x lion to os x mountain lion if yes does it costs money if costs how much it costs

Macs that will support OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
As usual, the newer the Mac the better:
MacBook Pro – 13″ from mid 2009 or later, 15″ from late 2007 and newer, 17″ from late 2007 and newer
MacBook Air – late 2008 and newer
iMac – models from mid 2007 and newer
    MacBook – 13″ aluminum from 2008, 13″ from 2009 and newer
Mac Mini – early 2009 and newer
Mac Pro – early 2008 models and newer
XServe – early 2009 models and newer
Macs that are NOT expected to support OS X Mountain Lion
Older Macs and those with weaker GPU’s will likely be left behind:
Anything with an Intel GMA 950 or x3100 integrated graphics card
Anything with an ATI Radeon X1600
MacBook models released prior to 2008
Mac Mini released prior to 2007
iMac models released prior to 2007
    Original MacBook Air
This list of compatible and incompatible Macs and system requirements are based off of the first OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview and may be subject to change, we will update when we learn more about the specifics. OS X Mountain Lion will be released this summer but presumably long before that we will know precise system requirements and what Macs are and are not supported by the new version of OS X. Stay tuned.

  • HT1338 I have a new mac mini and cannot download mountain lion from apps store gives error

I have a new 3rd gen i5 intel mini mac and it wont' download ML from app store  it gives the error
We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer.
I want to reinstall it for its running to slow and add only what I need.
it installs on my older mac mini

Assuming your mini came with ML installed and you have already made a backup of your personal data, restart the computer while also holding down 'Command-Opt-R' and it should reinstall automagically from Apple's servers.

You'll need to purchase Snow Leopard (10.6) from the Apple Store before you can use the App Store application.

  • Mac mini 2011 Radeon 6630 Mountain Lion- Lost Open CL and GPU computations etc

I had everything working in Lion, why did i bother upgrading. hehehe..
Any advice to get this working. Right now its greyed out in the performance settings. I lost Open CL and The option that helps the GPU with computations.
Is there any modifcations I can do to make it recognize the OpenCL. Apple pisses me off they never can just stick with a single OS long enough for all the software developers to support them.

Noel, thank you so much for responding. I have GPU Basic, advanced and normal. I just lost Open CL and Use graphics processor. I had it in Lion as I was part of the beta for Cs6 and complained and complained, they enabled it all. I think its a photoshop CS6 issue inside of mountain lion.
Any way to like use a setting to force photoshop to enable these settings.
