I copied the serial number right off the screen of my iPhone, and the Apple website tells me it's not a valid serial number. What's wrong?

No! Apple is not law enforcement and therefore does not have personal investigating lost or stolen property other than Apple's own.
Even if they had the information data protection laws would prevent them from giving it to you or anybody else including law enforcement. -
Hi, I buy iPhone 4s 16G white new today, but when I check serial number on apple support, that is invalid serial number, the serial number is not recognised. Then I check by using IMEI, "our records indicate that this product has been replaced. Please provide the serial number for your replacement product to find the support and warranty coverage information. What is replacement product really is? I am still confused. Is it recondition product?

I guess it comes down to just how valuable unlimited data is for you! As others have said, you cannot put a basic phone on the line for now. So you either need a smartphone or do nothing, (which means no phone and still paying for service) to keep unlimited. And then of course you would have to buy the iPhone 5 at full price if you go that route.
Otherwise you can just get a basic phone for now, drop the data plan, and then at upgrade time get a subsidized smart phone on a tiered data plan. I know it is hard to give up unlimited, I upgraded at full price last month to do this, but am not sure how good a decision that was! The real unknown is how long we can keep it anyway......
Edit: in your original post you refer to a SIM card. AFAIK, the X2 doesn't have one so that shouldn't be an issue. -
AppleCare took the wrong iPhone serial number
I dropped my iPhone 4S in the toilet yesterday - bummer. Fortunately I purchased AppleCare+ when I first bought the phone. Today I called up AppleCare, told them what happened and asked what my options were. I decided to spend the $49 for a send in service/replacement. They told me to go to a UPS store and they would send it to Apple, Apple would look at it, and I'd recieve a replacement phone in about a week. So I took my iPhone to the UPS store, they took my repair ID and printed me out a sheet with the product information on it. The problem is, when I got back home I realized that the serial number on the sheet was my mother's iPhone serial number, not mine which I just shipped to Apple. So now what? Will Apple "deny" the replacement due to the serial numbers not matching up? Should I call AppleCare and inform them?

I believe that on this platform, sneep gets the serial from the output of prtconf.
There is a minor correction to be made :

that you will find on the physical serial tag.
The banner "serial" is the decimal equivalent of the host ID, which you normally get in hexadecimal from the "hostid" command. -
Is it safe to give someone your iPhone serial number, when you want to sell the phone.... So they can 'verify' it?
Probably safer than giving them the IMEI number.

If you are trying to connect via wifi to our iPhone then the password should be displayed on your phone when you go into Personal Hotspot, by default it is a random password set by the phone but you can change it there.

First, if you have an iCloud backup of your stolen phone, you can restore a replacement phone or another iOS deivce to your iCloud backup. This would restore the photos from the backup to the device, along with your other data and settings. You restore to an iCloud backup during the initial device setup. If the device is already set up your have to erase it by going to Settings>General>Reset and tapping Erase All Content and Settings, then go back through the initial setup screens, and when given the option choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
If your photos were in your photo stream, you can either sync another iOS device with your iCloud account and turn on photo stream, or you can sync your computer with your iCloud account and turn on photo stream, as outlined here: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/ios.html. This would allow you to access any photos that still remain in your photo stream. (However, photos are only saved in photo stream for 30 days. Any photos older than 30 days would be lost.) -

Ok, I lost my Iphone 4 without having "Find My Iphone" App or Icloud set up properly. I tried recovering my Icloud which I only registered once but I think I got my email incorrectly when registering but I never went back to fix it or looked into it. But I noticed whenever I download an app onto my Ipad, it's also downloaded to my Iphone. So does that mean I did have ICloud set up? I have called Apple Support and tried going online resetting passwords and UserIDs and I still can't seem to find it! Then I ended up creating a whole new ICloud account on my IPAD, not sure if that made it worse but it only registers my IPAD only.
Also, what can your registered serial number do when someone else stole your iphone? Does Apple flag that number or do I need to report it?
Extremely lost and frustrated!!When you create an iCloud account you have to associate each of your devices with that iCloud account. If you never got iCloud and the "Find My iPhone" service setup correctly on the lost iPhone then the only thing you can do is report it. If you think it's stolen alert the authorities, tell AT&T so they won't bill you, and Apple can mark an iPhone as stolen in their system but not do much else about it.
Apps downloading from multiple devices is not associated with iCloud, that's occurring because you have your iPad & iPhone associated to the same Apple ID.
Registered serial numbers are not for the purpose of tracking stolen iPhones, they're just unique identifiers for a product. Telling the authorities will at least let them know your product is missing and if it's ever found they can return it to you. -

Apple does not get involved with lost or stolen items. A carrier may offer IMEI blocking (non in the USA currently do, but elsewhere some do). Your carrier would already know your IMEI number anyway, so just contact them and ask them about it.
It is VERY good that you had a passcode lock on the device. That means your personal information will be safe. And yes, after 10 failed attempts (each with increasing time out between allowing another attempt) the device will permanently lock them out until they restore the device in iTunes. Anyone can go ahead and restore your iPhone as new in iTunes, but that also wipes everything off it and restores it to new condition - which does mean they can go off and use it as theirs, but at least all your data is gone.
Did you file a police report it was stolen? Also your carrier should be told (and ask them about IMEI blocking). Sorry it is gone, but you did the best thing possible to protect yourself and your information when you set up that passcode lock.
