HT1349 Why would my intel imac wake at night unattended?

Why would my intel imac wake at night unattended?

Hey alexander1071,
I found an article that goes over some tips for when your computer won't stay in sleep mode:
If your Mac doesn’t go to sleep when you expect it to, or if it wakes up unexpectedly, you may need to change your sleep preferences or something may be waking your computer.
Make sure your computer’s sleep settings are set the way you want. In Energy Saver preferences, use the slider that controls the computer’s sleep.
Other users may be waking your computer remotely to use its shared resources. If you don’t want this to happen, open Energy Saver preferences and deselect “Wake for network access.”
Bluetooth devices can wake your computer. If you don’t want a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse to be able to wake the computer, open Bluetooth preferences, click Advanced, and then deselect “Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer.”
Key presses and mouse or trackpad clicks can wake your computer. If your computer wakes when you’re not present, something may be pressing the mouse button or keyboard.
Apps that access a disk can keep your computer from going to sleep. For example, iTunes accesses your disk to read the songs it plays, and DVD Player accesses the optical disc drive to play movies.
People using shared services on your computer can prevent it from sleeping. For example, they may be using a printer connected to your computer or accessing shared files stored on it. In Sharing preferences, turn off any services you don’t need to use by deselecting the On checkbox next to the service.
If Spotlight is indexing your hard disk, your computer won’t go to sleep. Click the Spotlight icon on the right side of the menu bar and check whether it says it’s indexing. Indexing your files can take several hours, depending on the number of files on your computer.
Malfunctioning USB, FireWire, and Thunderbolt devices may keep your computer from going to sleep. Disconnect those devices and see if your computer goes to sleep. If it does, reconnect each device, one at a time, until you find the one that’s malfunctioning. Contact that device’s manufacturer for more information.
Some PCI extension cards intentionally prevent a computer from going to sleep. Refer to the documentation that came with your card.

  • Why would my intel iMac become unresponsive shortly after booting?

I have an Intel Imac 5,1 (late 2006) 20" with a new 500GB hd and 3GB ram. I'm running 10.6 and adobe cs 5.5. If i wake my computer from "sleeping" the screen comes on for a period of about 8 seconds then goes blank and unresponsive to peripheral input. To correct this,  I have set the computer to never sleep. Now the problem has progressed so that when I try to boot the machine up, it will chime and invariably show the spinning gear (as it would during normal startup) however, after a few seconds, the screen goes completely blank and the computer won't continue the booting process. I have been able to get it to boot as normal on occasion, but not reliably and I'm worried when I shut it down that I won't be able to get it started again. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I have tried resetting PRAM & SMC for this iMac to no result....

The startup disk may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If necessary, click Repair Disk. You will need your install disc.
While you have the Disk Utility window open, see Capacity & Available at the bottom of the window.
Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.

  • Why is my Intel iMac restarting randomly and USB keyboard not working randomly?

My intel iMac has been randomly rebooting itself without any error messages.  It also seems to coincide with the keyboard (USB) not working, but not always.  At first, it seemed to happen right after waking the computer from sleep, but now it happens when I am just sitting at the computer about once or twice a day.  For now, i have temporarily removed all external devices (except time capsule) and disabled any bluetooth or iTunes synch'ing over wifi.  I have also disabled all power management features.
I've tried different keyboards and resetting the SMC.  Could bad memory cause this?

Could be anything from a loose power cable, to loose or bad RAM module.
    1. Check all your power connections, including the mag connector on the back of the iMac.
    2.  Reinstall the RAM modules, as per > iMac: How to remove or install memory. When installing new or reinstalling RAM, be sure to push firmly on each module with both thumbs to insure that they are fully seated in the slots.
Then if it is still acting up...
    3. Run the > Extended Apple Hardware Test

  • HT1349 why would my itunes open every time i turn computer on

why would my itunes software open automaticaly evey time i turn my computer on

You could go into MSconfig, and see if its set to start with the machine.
Normally by default iTunes will open when you plug in your device...there is an option to have it not open when a device is connected..but there is not an option to have it start with the computer that I am aware of.

  • Why won't my iMac wake up?

I recently switched ISP's to a Mifi from Verizon, which I keep off when not in use because of data costs.  I've noticed that since I made the switch, my iMac won't wake up when I want to use it.  I need to unplug it, replug it, and start it up in order to use it.  Why is this happening?  Does it have something to do with the Mifi being off, which doesn't make sense to me.  I have an iMac 10.8.2.  Thank you.
    Janiekhi

Try doing a SMC and PRAM reset and then post back. You can find insturctions at https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
Also I'd recommend not putting the computer to sleep, only put the display to sleep.

  • Mid 2006 intel iMac wakes itself up

I have a 17" 1.83 Ghz dual core intel based imac. very recently, after upgrading to version 10.5.5, when I put my computer to sleep it immediately wakes itself up, and it will not go to sleep by itself. the screen will dim like it usually does before sleeping, but full sleep will never occur.
I have tried rebooting, as well as resetting the SMC. I have tried sleeping with no running applications. I have set a hot corner to sleep the display, and that works, but I cannot get thee computer to sleep. its pretty frustrating. any ideas?

whoops found the problem. My wireless USB mouse was waking it up for some reason. I guess Ill just unplug it when I put my comp to sleep from now on.

  • Why would my entire iMac lose audio from working in Premiere Pro?

When using Premiere Pro, my iMac lost all audio several times in a row. The action that kept causing this malfunction was pulling audio from the Source Moniter into my timeline. The audio clip is a .wav file and is mono, if those details help. The only thing that brings my audio back is restarting the computer. I've gone into my sys prefs for audio and nothing there helps. What could be causing this?

    Hi,
    Could be problematic clip.
Try with a different wav file and see if you can reproduce the issue.
Also test issue with the same wave file in a new project.
    Good luck,
    Chesterr

  • Why does my intel imac (2008) keep shutting down?

Imac recently started shutting down. no new hardware/software additions. Happens randomly, sometimes on start-up. Any ideas?

    From: Eustace Mendis
    Sounds like a Broken Drive...
Most of the times this will be solved with a HardDrive Replacement
    although,
    you could try this
Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R).
Keep holding these keys until the Apple icon appears.
This indicates that your Mac is starting up.
After the Recovery System is finished starting up,
you should see a desktop with an OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" window.
After you do this, select Disk Utility and run it.
    On the next screen,
Select the hard drive in the left hand column,
the First Aid tab on the top, and click on Reparid Disk. (bottom left)
When that is done, click on Repair Permissions.
When that is done, quit Disk Utility and restart.

  • Why did my new iMac wake from sleep mode 3 times last night, by itself

.. after the third time within the 3am hour, I had to shut it down.

Probably your mouse detected some movement. Try placing it on an opaque white surface, like a notepad.

  • Why does my intel iMac not shut down properly?

On Shutdown, the screen goes black, appears to be shut down, but start button will not start unless you hold it in for several seconds. After machine boots messages says not shut down properly. Does this everytime. Has done it since it was new a year ago. the screen is black, but the button will not start the machine unless you hold it down, then you get the message. Have never seen anything like this. It is as if the machine thinks it is still running.

I'm not sure that a normal shutdown followed by turning off a power strip will reset the SMC. Power strips just switch off the "hot" leg of the power but do not interrupt the "cold" (neutral) leg or the "earth" (ground) connections. It may be that the SMC senses the cold-to-ground path or something like that to do a reset.
It may also be that the Mac hasn't actually shut down completely when you switch off the strip. You might try waiting a minute or two before doing that to see if it makes a difference, or listening carefully for any noises coming from the Mac after the menu shutdown before hitting the power strip switch.
I sometimes use an old veterinary stethoscope to listen for sounds coming from Macs for troubleshooting purposes (although never yet with a MacPro) & have noticed that the screen goes dark a little before everything else is fully shut down.

  • My intel iMAC keeps freezing up. How can I correct this issue?

Why is my Intel iMAC freezing up and how can I fix this issue?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    CAUTION
Before you restore the iPod make sure that your iTunes library has the version of apps that are presently installed on your iPod. Many apps have been update and the update apps are not compatible with the 2G iPod. I would do that by deleting the apps from your iTunes library and then transfer them to iTunes. See:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer

    Hi tele_player
I just ran those 2 commands in Terminal (copied & pasted like you recommended)..
The only things connected via USB to the iMac is wired Alu keyboard, wireless MX Revolution mouse, a Card Reader and a USB hub which my Time Capsule is connected to.
The only Energy Saver option which may have any impact was "Wake for Ethernet Network Administrator Access"... my mac is connected via Ethernet.. I've now unchecked that option, but not convinced that is the culprit..
There are no timed options in the Energy Saver to wake or sleep either.
Why would a USB device wake the computer?

  • Intel iMac and H/K Soundsticks

Everytime my intel iMac wakes from sleep, it doesn't recognize my soundsticks. They're available in the system preferences/sound output, but when I choose them they won't play. The only way to get them to play is to unplug the power to the soundsticks, and this seems to restart them. I can't find any drivers online, but they always seemed to work without driveres on my other powerbooks and older imacs. Thanks to anyone who can help!

I am also having problems with SoundSticks (USB version). I have to unplug and reconnect after sleep, and sometimes I have to do it for no reason at all - they spontaneously stop working sometimes.
Skype tends to screw them up as well - I got around this by having Skype configured for the internal speakers.
In addition I have a Telex USB microphone which completely refuses to work. It is recognised by System Preferences, iChat, everything, but if I select it, no sound is being received.
This is EXTREMELY frustrating on what is, otherwise a fantastic machine.
I have used the Soundsticks, and the Telex microphone on a variety of Macs and PCs over the last 4 or 5 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever. In fact if I plug them into my desktop PC, or my 1.25GHz 15" Aluminium PB G4 right now, there are no problems whatsoever.
The only thing I can think to try is reformatting and reinstalling the iMac. When I set it up, I used the wizard to copy all files and apps from the PB. Maybe there is something conflicting somewhere....

  • A few Questions about the intel iMac

    Hello,
I have just ordered the 1.83ghz 17" intel imac.
I have bought the imac to replace my PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 as its getting tired and falling apart now (nearly 3 years old) no apple care on it
I Have upgraded it with 2gb Ram.
My question is, i use the desktop mac i have for music using Logic Pro 7 and GarageBand, i have found GarageBand to be slow on my PowerMac G5 would the intel IMac be man/women (not trying to be sexest) for the job?
ie would it be the same power / more powerful than my G5?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Stuart
Ps Sorry if this has been asked about 1000 times, i did do a search and couldn't find the answers i was looking for, but if there is a thread about it please could you be kind enough to reply with the link.

Out of my personal experience, In School I use the Dual 2.0 GHZ G5 with 1GB of ram and I am using at home the 17inch 1.83 Intel iMac with 1GB or ram as well and seeing a big render difference with the iMac compared to the Dual G5. The only thing that ***** but will be solved soon is using non-universal software yet. Rosetta works and you get the job done but you dont see a speed difference using the power PC apps. Anything Universal is really really fast and I am satisfied with the increase of performance.

  • Tempurature sensors on Intel iMac CoreDuo?

    Hi all,
Just recieved my Intel iMac CoreDuo last night and I LOVE the speed! I am a huge system stats geek and enjoy monitoring my temperatures as well as other system stats. Has anyone found a program that can read ALL the system stats on these new iMacs, namely the temps?

Both programs work for me; I like GauchoSoft utilities and Hardware monitor, both thorough and well thought out.
I have emails from www.GauchoSoft.com who is waiting for a MacBookPro to write a temp utility with and from the author of Hardware Monitor who is also waiting for an IntelMac with which to write the temp portion.
BTW both OSX.4.4 versions work on the iMacIntels, except for temp functions.
Get Hardware monitor from Versiontracker, press cmd-4 and you can read your Macs birthday at Quanta.
Xresource Graph from GauchSoft shows both cores and memory usage also. It'll give you something to do.
