I want to listen to my friends music, but I am not interested in breaking the law or circumventing anything. Can she share her music with me legally by allowing me to sync my iPod with her computer for a time? I am ok with it erasing my content. When I sync back to my account it will erase her content then. Is this acceptable?
No, you cannot.
It is not legal to give music that you purchase to others.
your friend has only purchased the right to use the music for his/her own personal use.

How many different computers can I sync my iPod with? My laptop crashed and was completely wiped clean and this was the machine that my iPod synced with so I don't know if it will be counted as a "new" computer when I sync my iPod.
You can sync with onee at a time. Syncing to another will erase the current content.

You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year. It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you. If you connect your ipod to your computer then look in the hidden folder labeled "iPod_Control" . (This is on a Mac version, but i think it's the same for Windows) and in "Music" is all your music mixed up in different folders. Just drag the MUSIC folder onto itunes then BAM! It's done ;D

iTunes only syncs with one computer/library at a time.
If you have failed to maintain a backup or no longer have the old computer, you may be out of luck.
iTunes purchases can be transfered from the iDevice. Connect the device, do NOT sync. Select File > Transfer Purchases.
This will only transfer iTunes purchases. All other media will not transfer and will be wiped from the device when it is synced with a new computer/library. -
