HT1364 Why aren't my music files transferred to my itunes media folder anymore?

So I just replaced my HDD and installed iTunes. When I set up iTunes to put the files on my mirrored drives, the files wound up all over the place instead of my iTunes Media folder. Is this normal?

Milhouse,
Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and make sure that "Copy files...." is checked, as shown below.

We have 6 ipods and 1 iphone in our house. We have different itunes accounts. We use one computer. How can we share each others music? Adding media directly to the media folder does not make it appear in the library.  iTunes doesn't really 'look' at that folder except to go to specific files when you call upon them from a library. You have to drag new content to each user's library, that is assuming each user has their own library.

  • Help please... Transferring a separate iTunes Media Folder to new computer.

I keep my iTunes folder on my C drive on my old laptop but my iTunes Media folder is on my D drive (separate physical drive).
I have purchased a new laptop with a single drive, (C drive) however, I can no longer access my old laptop's C drive to transfer the entire iTunes folder onto the new laptop. I do however have access to everything in my iTunes media folder that previously resided on my old laptop's D drive.
I thought I could just download the latest version of iTunes and copy my iTunes media folder that I had on the D drive over. I have done that but the only media that shows up in iTunes is what I've actually purchased from iTunes. Even that it wants me to download from the cloud. All the songs that I've ripped from my CD's are missing even though they are actually in my new iTunes media folder. All my playlists are also missing.
I do have a 6 month old backup of my iTunes folder on a backup drive but I've downloaded and ripped music since then.
What do I need to do to transfer all my media, playlists and genera tags to my new laptop?
Do I actually need to transfer my entire iTunes folder to the new computer or is there a way I can only transfer my iTunes media folder and get everything back?
As much as I like iTunes, I really wish there was a easy foolproof way to transfer all your media...
    Thanks,
    Tom

Restore the 6 month old backup of the iTunes folder into the current User's Music folder.
Make sure the D: drive has the media folder on the same path it was on previously.
Check the library works, make sure the correct media folder is selected.
Add the media folder to the library to add in any new content.

  • How can I move my media files from USB-HD to NAS without having to copy the media files to iTunes Media folder?

I have iTunes on a Mac with the iTunes Media folder stored locally and the music on an external USB-HD. The music files are Not copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library.
Now I want to move my files from USB-HD to a NAS without losing any information or settings. I want to do the similar to my iPhoto library. I do not want to consolidate my files to iTunes Media folder. The articles I’ve read only discuss how to do if the files are copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library. Any tips or trix?

I have iTunes on a Mac with the iTunes Media folder stored locally and the music on an external USB-HD. The music files are Not copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library.
How are you achieving the above? What are your copy setting in preferences? If you are manually overriding the copy-to by holding down the option key while adding media then that won't apply when you import a playlist (as in importing the .xml).  When you import a playlist like that you are essentially adding the files to the library again and it will obey the  preferences setting since you can't option add them that way.
Correct on the .itl.  Only iTunes itself can edit that file.
I think you need to review your basic wants/needs in doing all this.  If your reason for not wanting to use the Media Folder settiing is because you do not want it to go on the internal drive, but you don't actually mind if it organizes it as long as it is on the NAS, change the Media Folder preferences setting to the NAS and let it consolidate to there.  If you want to move the stuff but keep it organized in your own folder structure you may need to do it as I suggested initially.  Once it is on the NAS and iTunes recognize the file locations you can do what you can only do if you manually manage music which is move it around in Finder afterward once it is on the drive and recognized to tweak location to your final wishes.

  • ITunes consolidation creates duplicate files in iTunes Media folder

    Hi,
I recently downgraded from iTunes 11.0.2.26 to 10.7 to get around an AirPlay bug i see starting in 11.0.
As a result I need to rebuild part of my iTunes library and am seeing some strange behavior.
I have some Movie files currently in the iTunes Media folder (where iTunes is pointed for the media) -- when I drag and drop these into iTunes and do "Consolidate Library", iTunes creates 2 files (1 is a duplicate) in the Movie folder. For example, if I have a movie titled "HomeMovie" I see the following folders:
"Movies --> HomeMovie" and within the HomeMoview folder I see the following 2 files: HomeMovie.m4v, HomeMovie 1.m4v
There is only a single listing (HomeMovie) in the iTunes interface, pointing to HomeMovie 1.m4v.
    Strange.
I can get around this by deleting HomeMovie 1.m4v. and pointing iTunes to HomeMovie.m4v, but this is not desirable.
"Copy files to iTunes Media Folder" is disabled.
I am also seeing this behavior when dragging and dropping files from an external Hard Drive.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi,
I have been doing some testing on this subject and I agree that PSE does leave unwanted temporary files around.
I checked out PSE 9, PSE 10 and PSE 11 and they all leave the temporary files there. I'm assuming that the files are created as a safety measure for when the main file is updated but as you have found out, PSE doesn't remove them.
By reading other forum threads, I get the impression that Adobe aren't really interested in it as they feel we should tidy up our own file system. It's like taking a walk through the park and dropping some litter - do you pick it up or leave it for the park keeper to pick up. I was always told to pick it up.
I'm not sure whether you are aware, but there is another Adobe forum for bug reports and feeback. I think Adobe may look there more than they do on this forum. I searched that forum and found a similar question asked but nobody has answered. I have added my count and comments with a link to this thread. If you can, it might be good for you to add your count.

  • I need help transferring my itunes content from an old exteranl hard drive to a new one. The itunes media folder is on the external drive, the itunes library file (.itl) resides on my mac in the music folder.

I have already copied over from the old hard drive to the new hard drive the iTunes media folder (423 GB). But this does not contain the iTunes Library .itl file which for good or bad reason has been working from the mac itself from inside the user music folder. In iTunes Preferences, Adanced Preferences window the iTunes media fold location is currently set to the ITunes Media folder on the old hard drive. How and why i set it up like this all that time ago is forgotten! Do i simply browse for a new location for the newly created duplicaye file?  My worry is that i will end up with every song listed twice in iTunes, or worse manage to wipe the content like a mate did!

Okay, solved.  Simple really, just moved the media folder location and there was no duplication. Phew!

  • Music file transfered from PC does not appear in t...

Some of my music files transfered from PC does not appear in the music player in the cellphone but they appear as rigntone..NOKIA N81
    How will i resolve it??
    Can someone help me?
    Please reply, it's urgent.

    Hi Irosenth
Thanks for the answer. I am not sure I understand your question though.
We have a collection of reader enabled pdfs that the user can open in a webbrowsercomponent in a .Net winform.
We used to (Reader 9.4 and before) replace the Readers "save pdf" button with our own "save pdf" button that
    - saves the pdf
    - exports its data as xml
    - send a message to the .Net winform that the pdf has been saved.
We implemented our own save button and its functions using a plug-in.
Now I can't find our "save pdf" button in Reader X. That is my problem.
So I try to create a new toolbar and place our "save pdf" on this new toolbar as you adviced me.
I expect the toolbar to show up in the Tools pane in the webbrowser component in Reader X.
But it doesn't. There is no Tools pane when I open the PDF in the webbrowser.
(btw all the keyboard shortcuts we have created in the plugin (ie CTRL, ALT, L) works fine - so the plugin generally works).
When I couldn't find my toolbar with its button in the webrowser, I tried to open one of the reader enabled pdfs in the Reader X as a standalone application.
This was just as a test to see if it worked any different from the browser plugin. It is not part of our use case.
But I noticed that in the standalone Reader X I do have a Tools pane, and my new toolbar but no "save pdf" button.
This is how it looked with Reader 9.4 and before:
OK the red text in the screenshot is quite difficult to read. It says (from above)
"We have replaced the Readers save button with our own save button in the plugin.
This is the (selvcreated save) button I miss in Reader X"
"This is a Reader enabled PDF shown in a webbrowser component in a .Net Winform"
"The users only have the Reader, not Acrobat"
    Best regards

  • Why do music files get corrupted in iTunes?

Why do music files get corrupted in iTunes? All kinds of files;( mp3, mp4, aac, etc., either purchased from iTunes, Store, downloaded from online, or uploaded from an audio disc) SUDDENLY GET CORRUPTED AND STOP PLAYING! Even if I delete the file from my iTunes and then re-open it from the source, it appears to be corrupted. My system has been thoroughly scanned and does not have and never has hAd, a virus. Music files should not have a shelf life. They're just non-living pieces of information. So why should they suddenly go bad? It is unacceptable that over the past year I have had to delete many files from my iTunes library and find some other source for the same song. It has been an exhausting headache and an exasperating waste of my time.

this is not necessarily the case, I had an itunes library go bad on me. I noticed the corrupt files on my ipod, they were either skipping real bad or sounded like there was some crazy modulation filter applie. Anyways, i went to iTunes and the files were bad there, so I played them in WMP, also bad, so obviously it was a file issue, BUT, what was the source of the corruption.......also, this happened ONLY to mp3s, no other audio file.......so i had backups and copied the bad files from a dvd and played them in WMP, files were good, then i import them to iTunes, and the files are crap again, so I tried just adding to library, still bad. So the file was fine before, once iTunes touched it, the file went bad, I **** you not. So I uninstalled iTunes from my PC, downloaded the newest version and reinstalled, same problems, so i continued trying with a different version, and making sure all registry entries were cleared before installing etc. NOTHING, so in the end i had to start using Winamp and all those files have not since caused me problems. So NO, it does not have to be hard drive issues, assess your own situation and you should be able to figure out if it is your HDD. My problem seemed to be iTunes library corrupting my metadata. However, I could never get it to work. I am glad to say I have since abandoned my PC and bought a new iMac on which i once again happily running iTunes with all the same audio files as before

  • Why won't the music file I clicked and dragged onto my website publish?

I followed all the instructions in iWeb for inserting a music file on a page, by clicking on the music file and dragging it onto the iWeb page of my choice.  Yet when I attempt to publish the changes, I get an error message saying "There was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again later, or check with your service provider."  I've tried it numerous times, but always get that message.  I've tried changing the file name so that it does NOT include any spaces, but that doesn't work.  Then, I tried replacing the spaces with underscores, but still it won't publish.  Anyone have any idea how I can get this to work?

To verify that it's not the music file publish your site to a folder on your hard drive and open it locally with your browser. Click on the site's folder and select Local Folder in the Publish To menu.
If the music file is there and plays OK then do this:
go to the System/MobileMe preference pane and log out of MMe.
login with a bogus username and password like "test" and "test". This clears the caches.
login with your correct username and password, launch iWeb and try publishing to MobileMe again.

  • ITunes 10.6.1 update does not show newly imported music in viewer but files are in iTunes media folder, how to correct?

Updated to iTunes 10.6.1.7 today from 10.5 on a Win 7 SP1 64-bit machine and attempted to add new music to the library by both drag-n-drop and import files; this new music does not show up in the library viewer but has been added to the iTunes media folder. My iTunes 10.5 version was working properly prior to the update. Any recommendations to correct this issue? Thanks!

Immediately after the install, Windows was rebooted. I also attempted multiple variations of closing and restarting iTunes and/or reboot Windows. iTunes was unresponsive to mp3 files being added. Since I was unable to see the added music files to the library, I did not try to add other files.
Out of frustration, I let iTunes run over night and to my surprise the added music appeared in the library viewer the following morning.  I can now add new mp3 (and AAC also) music files to the library and it immediately appears in the viewer.  How or why it now works is a total mystery.

  • Why are my artist folder located in my Itunes Media folder, not Music Folder?

I recently got a new computer and moved my itunes library to this new one.  Everything is working fine, but itunes just reorganized my entire library.  As of a couple of days ago all my artist folders were under itunes media\music, but now all the artist folders are just in the itunes\itunes media folder.  The artist folders are mixed among my mobile application and home video and podcast folders.  There is still an itunes media\music folder and there are a couple of artist folders remaining in my music folder but they're all empty.  My preference has 'music\itunes\itunes media' as my Media Folder location under preferences and 'keep media folder organized' and copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library' are both checkmarked. Why did it move all my artist folders out of music and into my root folder and how can I get it to move all the artst folders back to the itunes media\music folder?

    nevermind  fixed it File>Library>reorganize

  • My itunes doesn't save new music files to the itunes media folder, even though I have ticked the box in the preferences telling it do so...???

Ok so, my itunes version is up to date, and I've located my itunes media folder... However, newly purchsed songs are not being backed up to the media folder, despite all the right options being ticked in the preferences box. This is immensly frustrating as I cannot back up my itunes library to a separate hard drive. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

iTunes stores media in the location set in preferences.  If you have changed things then this won't necessarily be the same place it puts the library file and other files that also need to be backed up.
If you are content to have everything in one location then I suggest you consolidate it all into one place.  Note this copies files, it doesn't move them, so you need ot make sure you have sufficient hard drive space wherever  you select.

How to Consolidate Your iTunes Library and Keep It Organized - http://www.switched.com/2010/11/02/itunes-consolidate-library-keep-organized/
Technically you don't have to have it all in one location to back up.  You just need to make sure you have gotten everything.  I used to have iTunes on two separate drives but I would just make sure each drive was backed up 100% and I would know it was all backed up.

  • How can i make sure all of the files in my music file are on my itunes??

I copied all of my itunes music via usb drive (crappy process) onto my mac in my music folder.. but it too several times due to the small size of the usb drive.. anyways..
When you add music to your music folder.. it doesn't go onto your itunes playlist until you choose that specific song..
can itunes perform a search to make sure you have a copy of every music file on your itunes?

iTunes menu File -> Add to library and select the \Music\iTunes\iTunes music\ folder.
FYI: If you are using iTunes 9, go to \Music\iTunes\iTunes media\ folder.
Make an alias on the desktop of the *Automatically add to iTunes* folder. Then drag songs to the is folder and they will automatically get added to iTunes and moved to the correct folder.

  • I deleted music in the iTunes app but the files are still in the iTunes Media folder

    Hi everyone,
I am doing my best to free up some HD space and decided to get rid of some of my music library in iTunes. For the record, my iTunes content is accessed from an external HD. My goal is to move the library back to my Mac's HD instead of the external because I don't want to use the external for anything by backups. (I have to get rid of some content in order for the library to fit on my Mac's smaller HD)
I went into the iTunes app and deleted everything I was no longer interested and managed to get my library down to about 50GBs. I moved the files to the trash and did not choose "keep files". Unfortunately, when I looked at the iTunes Media folder on my external HD, the albums I've deleted in the app are still there. That folder is about 80GBs.
Ultimately, I want what's in my iTunes Media folder to reflect what I've narrowed down in the App's library. Im trying to avoid deleted everything again manually in the media folder on my external as it is a pain.
    Any help/suggestions?

Exact same problem even though I selected 'move to thrash option'. Maybe it was because I was using screen sharing to another mac on a LAN but can't see how this would make a difference.

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow?  In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?
Once again thank you for helping me out. I am not too Itunes savvy and really appreciate you taking the time to answer.
