As a test, shut down your computer and disconnect ALL USB devices. Do this procedure to Reset the shuffle

Start up computer with nothing connected, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if it's not a laptop). Run iTunes. Connect shuffle to a direct USB port on the computer. See if there's any improvement,
If the shuffle is now recognized, there may have been a USB device conflict previously, or maybe all of the devices connected at the same time overloads the USB bus (for power). An iPod charges its battery while connected, so it is a high-power USB device.

Have you updated iTunes on the computer? If you updated your iPod! but not iTunes, you will have communication errors.
Have you backed up and updated your iPod? You should back up regularly. Update to keep your device working well with current iTunes.
Once you have iTunes working well on the computer and have a backup saved (find your back up time and date on your iPod in settings, or on the computer under the iTunes pull-down menu, under "Preferences", choose the Devices tab and look in the box for your backup.

It is using the same database on disk. You may have to re-launch Mail.

You got the new iphone????? I have same problem. I transferred audiobooks to device to find no audiobooks on device (despite it being in iTunes as if it was). Have you found a solution????? I even tried to change import settings on format transfer but hasn't worked.

If the answer to the above question is "yes", FIRST, set up a backup of your new computer before you do anything else so the next time your computer breaks you will not be in the same situation. I need help on how to open my book I just purchased so that I can read it. I am new to the apple family and have just gotten the updated phone a month ago. I purchased on Itunes the book and can see the book but it will not open for me on my phone or my mac book. I found out that I cannot open the book on my mac so I just would like to know how to open the book on the iphone. It is telling me to purchase it again? I all ready spent 14 dollars on the book and would just like to read it now. Please tell me what the steps are, I would greatly appreciate it.

Have you downloaded or synced the (free) iBooks app to your iPhone ? The iBooks app is the only way that you can currently read Apple bought e-books. If you have got the iBooks app then you can either sync the book from your computer to your iPhone via the device's Books tab in iTunes (which you do in a similar way to how you sync music, apps, films etc to the phone). Or you can just download the book directly into the iBooks app on your iPhone (there is help on re-downloading here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519). There is also some info on the iBooks app in the iPhone manual which you can download from here http://support.apple.com/manuals/iphone/

The iphone is not a storage/backup device.
The sync is one way - computer iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old comptuer, to your new one.
