HT1386 How do you manually add a song to an iPhone/iPod in iTunes 11.02?

Earlier versions of iTunes allowed us to drag/drop similar to how the Playlist section is still set up. This was very easy and intuitive. I do not want to synch the whole library, but now there is not an option for manually updating individual songs from the library on my Mac to my iPhone 4S.

I don't know what Apple was thinking with iTunes 11, this is the worst iTunes EVER. Year after year, Apple continues to ruin what used to be a great app.
In iTunes 11, your devices no longer appear on the left along side your playlists. There's now a spot in the top right corner that says the number of devices. If you click on that button you can see the devices that are connected, the ammount of free space and an eject icon but that's it. If you click on the device, you can set it up but I cannot seem to find a way to simply drag and drop a song from my music library to my iPod or more importantly to a specific playlist on my iPod. A very common thing... HOW DO I DRAG AND DROP SONGS INTO AN IPOD PLAYLIST IN ITUNES 11???
If there is no answer, how do I downgrade my iTunes to 10 or 9???

Yes this might be the stupidest question ever, but leave it to Apple to make the simplest thing hard.
In EVERY version of Itunes, up until 11, you used to be able to type an artists name, song name, or album into the search field and it would narrow it down so that you can see what you are looking for (in the list below). Now, Itunes tells you that you have music by said artist, yet doesn't list them whatsoever. Furthermore, when you click on the results it doesn't list them for you either.
I'm sure it is some weird setting, but cannot for the life of me find. I cannot name one application that doesn't show a list when you type in the search field. Augh!

Hi, first, you should prevent the iTunes library auto sync with iPhone: Launch iTunes > click Preferences... > click Devices. In the window, check the option 'Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically'. Next, connect your iPhone with your computer via the USB cable. Click the mini menu for iTunes on the very top left and click the option 'Show menu bar'. After then you can see iTunes File, Edit, View, Control, Store and Help menus on the ribbon. Click File > Devices > Transfer purchases from (your iPhone name). You can also access to the File menu by holding down Alt (Option on Mac), Shift and F keys. This is how to get your iPhone purcahsed song transferred to iTunes Library.

My hard drive crashed a few months ago, and I did not have a back up. So I now have this jam packed iPhone and a brand new iTunes library. I recently downloaded some new songs to the library (like that Blackberry commercial 'All You Need Is Love' song) and want to add it to my iPhone's iPod.
I'm going to need step-by-step directions here, people. It's currently set to automatic sync upon connection.

Well it is going to see your computer as a new computer thus remove everything.
Look for 3rd party software. This question about users not making backups as they should comes up daily.
At min, you can under preferences turn off auto sync.
Then connect (After making sure you are logged into iTunes store with your account and computer is authorized).
Then when you connect you can right click on your iPhone in device list and choose to transfer purchased content.
However, this will only take off what you bought via iTunes. It will not take off anything you obtained elsewhere (eg: CD rips etc).
This will get whatever you bought (via iTunes) off. After that if you sync it will erase all and sync what you now have.
Other option as mentioned is 3rd party software.
For future, really should look into making backups.

Hi. I just got my nano today. Was prompted to download version 7, did it, and everything went smoothly. All songs transferred to my iPod, no problem. However, the cross fading did not transfer. However, given that I just downloaded version 7 I might not have set it to cross fade before downloading all my songs. Does this mean I have to delete all the songs and start over? I've tried connecting the iPod with the usb cable and setting the crossfade to 4 seconds but it doesn't translate to the iPod. Help please. I realllly love major fading. In other words i want NO silence between songs. Thanks !

Oh wait, cross fading and gapless are different. So I can have gapless which I think I do have because the next song starts realllllly fast after the last one ends. So that is probably gapless but cross fading is not available on any models? Is that it? thanks alot

On previous versions of iTunes it was easy to select songs, albums and/or play lists. How do you do this on the newest version?

The same way you select media and apps in any other version of iTunes to sync.
Either check the songs in question or with the device connected go to the Music/App/Movies/Podcast tab and select the specific content to sync.

Some you can't edit directly in regular view. Highlight a track or series of tracks, then Get Info (File, or command+i)

I can't tell if my songs are in iTunes Match or not as on my phone scrolling through the list there is no cloud icon but I do have iTunes Match turned on my computer and on my iphone.

Once a track has been processed in iTunes there will be no cloud icon next to the track as long as it is on your local HDD. This means it is "in the cloud." To see the status of the tracks switch to Song view and pull down View > View Options and select "iCloud Status" then close the small window.
