it is liklely carrier locked. You would have to contact the carrier to which it is locked and ask if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.

I replaced my old iphone with a new iphone and cannot register it with my existing itunes account. I discovered this when I noticed that my calendars weren't syncing. Do I need to open a new itunes account or can I change the device/iphone in my exisitng itunes account? Wrong language registering new iPhone on iTunes. How do I get it back to English?

Registering my new iPhone 4 on iTunes on my Windows 7 computer.
Asked to input iPhone number (form already had home phone in iPhone place). I tried to input new iPhone number but it asked for 4 digit code. I ended up putting original home phone number back but it seems to have recognised my STD code as an international dialling code and changed reistration language to Spanish/Portuguese.
Am now stuck and can't go forwards or back until I get it back into English.

Thank you. I was having the same problem (registration was in English and then the Chinese screen appeared). Reseting the iPad solved this problem for me.
I unplugged the iPad from the computer and then held down the menu and wake button at the same time until the unit reset (the screen goes black and then the white apple logo reappears). I plugged the iPad back into the computer and the screen was in English.
If anyone is curious about the screen before I reset here is what it said:

I have my iPhone backed up on a crappy old laptop and want to move everything to my new laptop.
How can i do this without a) having to wipe and re-sync my phone and b) without losing all my backup data from the old laptop.

To avoid data loss, copy your entire iTunes folder from your current computer to your new one following one of the methods in this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527. Then authorize the new computer for any Apple IDs used to purchase media from iTunes or App store. Then create a new iPhone backup on your new computer by:
Before connecting your phone, open iTunes and disable automatic syncing (iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent...)
Now connect your phone and right-click on its name when it appears on the left sidebar of iTunes and select Backup
When this finishes you can go back and re-enable automatic syncing if you prefer this. Also be sure to migrate your contacts and calendar to your new computer prior to syncing if you are syncing with Outlook or another supported program using iTunes. If you fail to do this you will lose your contacts and calendar.

I have the latest version of iTunes. The device is listed in my iTunes. Just switched phones - how do I check phone ID number to know if the iPhone listed is the one I have now?

Let me try again. While trying to sync my new iPhone with iTunes to my computer, I got this message:
"iTunes could not back up the iPhone because the iPhone disconnected."
So I wondered if my computer was trying to back up my old iPhone. I checked the Serial number (the phone id number if referred to earlier) and yes it was. So I added the new phone...and got the same error message. Rats.
