HT1386 New computer, old ipod touch?

I just got a new computer and I have a first generation touch. How do I transfer the content from my ipod touch to my new computer and itunes?

The ipod is not a backup device.
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

  • New Computer Old Ipod Touch

I got a new computer and recently hooked-up my old Ipod. Unfortunately, only the music I purchased on the Ipod transferred to the new Itunes on the new computer. All of the CD's I had on the Ipod don't transfer. Itunes wants me to update to Ipod Touch software 4.02 but it will cause all the songs on the Ipod to be erased and replaced only with what is in currently in Itunes.
Is there an easy way to transfer the music or does Apple have my hands tied?

  • New Computer, old iPod Touch; will contacts, calendars, and bookmarks sync?

I just got a new hard drive for my MacBook and reinstalled all the applications and things, so I lost my Address Book contacts and my iCal calendars, but I have them all stored on my iPod touch. If i sync my iPod with my computer, will I lose these things, or will they sync over to the computer?
Also, will the bookmarks I have on my iPod sync?

There's an option under "Info" in the iPod's syncing information where you can replace everything on the iPod with what's on the computer. Don't click that, and you should be fine.

  • New computer/old ipod - how do I update my libray from my ipod?

new computer/old ipod - how do I update my libray from my ipod? the music wasn't transfered from cd's, shared music files...no purchased from the ipod store.

The ipod is not a storage/backup device. The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything on your new computer.

  • New Computer+Old iPod=Problems

I got an iPod touch about a month ago and synced it with my PowerBook G4. Then, my PowerBook completely crashed and I lost everything on it, so all I really have left are all the files on my iPod. Now I have a new computer, a MacBook Pro, and the only options it allows me when I plug in my iPod are to either delete everything existing on my old iPod and sync to my new iTunes (which means I would effectively lose everything I had left from my old computer) or it could add new files to my iPod, but I cannot transfer the songs already on my iPod to my new computer. I understand why they do this to avoid illegal file-sharing, but it doesn't seem quite fair when both computers belong to me, and one simply crashed (especially since it was a mac). Any tips on how I can put my old songs on my new computer? I don't want to lose everything!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Take a look at iRepo (link).

Have you tried listing what happened to your Powerbook G4 here? Unless it was a sudden and critical hard disk failure I can't see what could have happened that it is totally unrecoverable.

  • New macbook, old ipod touch.... cannot access music!!

I recently bought the macbook pro for college. I have an iPod touch, which is basically attached to me at all times. I am trying to open up my library on this computer but it continually says that this ipod is synced with another computer and I cannot access my music, add, or delete anything. How do I sync this ipod with my new computer, and/or UNsync the other computer (family computer which I will not have access to come august)
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ipod touch will sync with ONE computer at a time. If you sync to another, it will erase the content from the ipod first, then replace with content from the new computer. This is the way it is designed.
You should move all of your info/music/pics/etc from the old computer to the new one first, then sync.

You should have just copied \Music\iTunes\ folder from the old computer to the new computer.
but I can't get all of my applications and some bought items to appear on ipod
Connect thr iPod touch and select it in iTunes.
Click the Applications tab across the top.

So it appears to me that you will need to get the songs on your iPod to your new computer.

  • New computer, old ipod. someone please HELP!

So I just got a new computer and I was just wondering if there was any way to take what is already on my ipod and transfer it to my itunes.
My library has nothing it as of now due to the fact that my old computer, with my old library on it, will not even trun on so I do realize I have probably lost everything and wil have to start from scratch...
any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Where is your backup?
This is one of the many reasons that maintaining a backup is basic.
You can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases
You can see if this helps:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329
You can also try a forums search, as this is asked and answered many times each day. Zevoneer explains the option very well.

  • New Computer, Old iPod.  Not Giving me an option to sync. Stuck on Do Not Disconnect!

I just authorized my new computer and plugged in my old ipod.  I just want to have access to all the music I have purchased through itunes, but nothing is happening.
My itunes account is open and my iPod has been on "Do Not Disconnect" for a long time now.
I have logged out and logged back it.  Held the menu button and the center button to restart ipod and disconnected then reconnnected. I have authorized then unauthorized and reauthorized.  Still nothing.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks!

I suspect your problem is your new iPhone 5 is running a lower version of iOS than your old iPhone 5. So, first update your new phone. Once you do that: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You should now be able to use the backup of your old iPhone 5.

old computer crashed, i don't have a back-up of my music, can i load my iPod music onto my new iMac? also- i dont want to delete and reload cuz of all my games (i know im lame) but ive made good progress on them!

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music using a third-party program lke one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communitieo
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking one the iPOd under Devices in iTunes and selecting Back Up.
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.

  • New computer, old iPod and iTunes

I have a new PC and I installed iTunes 8 on it but it wont recognize the library on my iPod. It says it can't sinc with another ipod. Any suggestions? Can I transfer a library from one instance of iTunes to another?
    Thanks

*It says it can't sinc with another ipod.*
Are you sure that's what it said? Could it possibly have said the iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc?
if so, connect your iPod to your new computer. When you get the message above press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay:
Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • New computer, old ipod, big problem

I used to have all my music on my old computer, but my old computer got damaged so i can not use it anymore. it is obsolete. I still have ALL my music on my ipod, but now I can't put it on the computer (or maybe I just don't know how??). I have purchased ALOT of music via iTUNES and I don't want to lose any of it. Can someone PLEASE tell me how I can load all the music on my iPOD onto my new computer? PLEASE!!

    Its easy....
Open up iTunes 7. Plug in your iPod. Once the iPod shows up in iTunes select "File" from the top menu. In the list select "Transfer purchases from iPod".
That should transfer all your purchased music from your iPod to iTunes. No software to download or purchase. This is a new feature in iTunes 7.
Then I would suggest backing up your music collection to disc or a spare hard drive for safe keeping.

  • New computer and iPod Touch Purchased apps

So, i've been using for a while, my iPod Touch on my iMac, but now i can't access my iMac because i'm out of country and the iMac's display or motherboard isn't working (Double problem lol).I want to know how can i sync my iPod with my Netbook this time without loosing the apps of the iPod Touch, i bought several Apps without syncing with the Mac computer, i recently connected the iPod and saw the "Transfer Purchases" button, but i didn't press it since i want to make sure before i do that since i have over hundred dollars in apps on it.
So probably i will loose my iTunes Purchased music (maybe i can re-download it?), but i already saw some third-party programs to export the non-purchased ones so i
will firstly take all my music out of my iPod and the pics with that program.
Will the notes, calendar, Contact, mail accounts and other remain safe?
Will all the apps settings stay there (Like save games, accounts etc)
*I mainly want to do this to purchase the 3.0 Update once it's out in June 17 and upload songs in it.*
    *Thanks :)*

There's an option under "Info" in the iPod's syncing information where you can replace everything on the iPod with what's on the computer. Don't click that, and you should be fine.
