i just got a new laptop and i'm trying to sync my phone, but i'm scared i'll lose my contacts. help

Upgrading will erase all contents on the device. It restores some data, just not media files (apps, music, etc). The camera roll is restored also.
Right click the name of the iPhone in the source pane (left pane) in iTunes and select backup.
iTunes should automatically back up the iPhone doesnt remove your accounts, messages, call log, contacts, etc. Those are transferred back to the device after the restore/upgrade.

As for your media, you can right click the name of the device from the source and select transfer purchases.

If you were syncing previously with a different laptop, you can consolidate the previous library and move it to the new computer via a hard drive, it would be like nothings changed.

I can sync with my outlook calendar, but cannot sync with contacts or e-mail. When I click on Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars it doesn't open and reverts to the home page. When I try to open Mail I get an error message saying "Cannot get mail. The user name or password for Gmail is incorrect". If I press "settings" it reverts to home page. I was revised to restore settings which I have now done, but the problem has not been resolved. Can anyone help?

It may be a bit late for your needs, but there's a sync product for Outlook (an add-in) that will sync public and private folders/calendars. Once you have your items in a mailbox folder, the regular ios sync will bring it to your device. It's called Add2Outlook, it's made by DidItBetter.com Software.
It syncs private and public, mailboxes and folders in any direction. One-way, two-way, read-only or writable. It also works with Office 365 and hosted exchange providers, if that's your situation. It works for calendars, contacts, tasks, email, whatever. It can even sync to PST or between two different Exchange servers.
It installs on your workstation, not on the Exchange server.

Address Book won't sync with contacts on mobile.me anymore

I have a iMac 5,1 with MacOSX 10.6.4, mobile.me and an iPhone (4.0.2). For many, many years I have had Address Book which quite happily was in sync with the more recently acquired Contacts in Mobile.me. But now, my Address Book isn't syncing with Contacts. And the Contacts on my mobile phone syncs with the Contacts in mobile.me rather than with Address Book. I've tried all sorts of combinations of syncing to no avail. Can anyone please tell me how to ensure that Address Book syncs with Contacts in mobile.me and I would want Address Book to overwrite Contacts. The huge ongoing number of duplicates is another problem but there are many threads I can see that will help me solve that problem.

I am having this problem, too. Gmail is my mothership, all the contacts and groups are hosted there, I just want to pull it down to my iMac and my MacBook.
The process seems to work fine on the iMac, but I sync an iPod to that Mac almost every day. I do not sync a device to the MacBook, and it does not get Address Book updates. I feel strongly that the mobile device plays a role in the sync. I will try to sync an iPod to the MacBook, and see what happens. This is a valid test, but I am not willing to erase my iPod every other day just to keep my Address Book up to date on my laptop. This should work better.
I wish there was a tool for contacts like Calaboration. Calaboration makes my iCal sync both ways to Google, and works breath-takingly well.

First, be sure that the contacts on the devices are in the "icloud" section and not the "On my iPhone" (or iPad) section of the contact listings/groups.
Missing contacts:
Here's a test to perform - using a computer's browser, log into icloud.com and go to the Contacts page. If most of them are gone, then they are gone.
If they show up, then the problem is that your device is not connecting to the Contacts database on icloud.
On the device, go to Settings>icloud. Be sure icloud is on and using the right ID. If not, scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Delete Account - this just disconnects the device from that account, no data is lost. Then log back in using the correct ID. ALSO - be sure the Contacts are turned on (on the same screen).
Note: Contacts are not part of an iCloud backup, since they are part of contacts database on iCloud's servers. So performing a restore will not help.

Then they have been deleted. There are many reasons for this. One possibility is that someone else is using the same iCloud account (family member, etc.) and they deleted contacts, thinking they did want them on THEIR device. How to get them back? Unfortunately, an iCloud backup does not include any of the sync databases, like contacts, notes, calendars, reminders, etc. because the data is already stored in these databases. Your only hope for restoring the data is if you had that data on a computer (like a mac's Contacts, Calendars, etc.) and that data was backed up using whatever backup software you typically use (e.g. Time Machine on a mac). Just restore the data files back to the computer. Other than that, I'm afraid the data is gone.

In Itunes it is set to automatically sync to the laptop and in info sync contacts is checked and all contacts are checked.

Contacts & iCloud: can you have more than one iCloud account syncing with Contacts on the Mac?

I want to set up a shared iCloud account for multiple users in a (very) small office environment, where several new iOS devices and, for the moment, two Macs (2012 13" MacBook Pro and 2013 Mac Mini) will be able to read/write to a shared Contacts account – and at the same time maintain a second, personal iCloud account linked to the same Contacts app on one machine, which account's contacts data will remain private and inaccessible to the other Macs/devices which are likewise using the shared account.
Can this be done? (I.e., can Contacts app on a Mac include separate iCloud accounts?)
If so, how to set it up?

Thanks for your answer. There's no problem with others accessing that Mac – it's used by one person only – my question is can you add a second iCloud account to Contacts. Over the past two days I had tried to add the shared iCloud account to Contacts and kept getting failures. But maybe the server was down or the ISP was weird: your response assumes it can be done and so, to my embarrassment, I tried again just now and violá, it's done. Thanks again.
P.S. Finding a simple presentation that makes clear you can have more than one iCloud accounts syncing to Contacts at the same time was very hard to find, either from Apple or others on the web. Maybe I don't know how to search, but they could do with a clear explanation of this for the uninitiated.

I am not seeing the summary tab to be able to change what is being synced. I want to sync my contacts and it used to do it but it is not doing it now.

Well, if you no longer sync contacts with iCloud, that means that anyone else using your Apple ID for iCloud will no longer have access to your contacts.

Sync with "Contacts" Folder

All of my contact in Outlook are in the mail folder "Contacts"
However in iTunes, every other folder EXCEPT "Contacts" is showing up as availabe for sync
Hoe do I get iTunes to add the "Contacts" folder so I can sync with this?

MS is correct. A POP account will not sync content across multiple devices. It only saves content on the local machine. So, as you have found, the sent items from one device can only be seen on the one device. You inbox will look similar if you do not have one of the devices set to delete mail from the server. The only other folder you will see with a POP account is Trash.

Sync with Contacts

I have a Treo800W and am trying to sync with XP Pro Outlook 2007 via USB. The phone is about a year old and I have not had problems syncing except for the last few weeks and have found some of my contacts are missing on the phone. I have tried deleting and recreating contacts and the problem persists.

Did you add them back on the device or Outlook and then synced? If so the next option is to delete your partnerships and create a new Outlook Profile and sync to that one.
First though we need to back up your data. In Outlook go to File-->Import/Export-->Export to a file-->Personal Folder File(.pst)-->Make sure Personal Folders is highlighted and check the box on that says Include subfolders, click next and click on Browse. Save the file in My Documents and save it as "My Outlook Backup". This may take some time to backup the file.
Once that is done then on your computer go to Start then to control panel. Open up the Mail icon and select show profiles. In here click on add and create a new name. It can be anything but the other profile listed. Click ok once done and then click cancel on the next screen for email creation. Click ok to continue with no email support. Once that is done then near the bottom of the Profiles list you should have an option to prompt for profiles to be used. Close Outlook, then reopen it and pick the new Outlook Profile you just created. Pick no for the email setup and then next and then check the box to contune with no email support.
Then like before we are going to delete the partnerships on the device and PC and reset that up. Then sync, you are going to get asked what outlook option to use when you setup the partnership. Your going to pick the new one that you just setup. Then just like before sync with nothing. then check contacts and see how they come over to the PC from your device.

Facebook sync with Contacts

Hi,
So a little while ago, facebook started syncing with the contacts in my address book. I didn't set it to that, it just happened, but I'm losing contact info. It seems my address book is giving priority to the info on facebook and I've actually lost phone numbers for people who don't have them listed on facebook. How do I stop this? I can't seem to find a setting. I also don't have FB installed on the phone - so that's not it. Help please!!!

HT1386 synced with a another user account

When I tried to re-sync my iPhone 4S in iTunes and I click the boxes to sync contacts and calendar I get a message saying that this is synced with a another user account. I only know about one account I have which I used to sync this up before any help please

This issue has been around for literally years and apple unfortunately seems to be doing nothing about it. The only way to solve it is literally to back up all of the information on your iphone. Wipe it and start again. If anyone at apple would like to give us a better way to do it please do!

I bought this iphone 4 from someone on craigs list I went to go put music on it and switch the option to manually sync music but it said I cant change that becuae the phone is already synced with an itunes acocunt. And I have to erase everything on it and sync it with this computer but if i back it up and set it up as a new iPhone can I back it up after I "set it up as a new iphone" so I can get all my texts back and stuff??

Do you auto sync? If you do go ahead and sync again, but before you eject the iPad check to make sure that everything is selected properly to sync in the music tab of iTunes.
Ignore steps 1 & 2 - just don't disconnect the iPad after you auto sync and then follow the other steps
Connect the iPad to your computer with the cable
Launch iTunes
Click on the iPad name on the left under "Devices"
Click on anyone Music tab in iTunes on the right
Click on all of the artists, or playlists that you want to sync - or choose the "Entire Library" option
Make sure that the Sync Music heading is checked
Click on Apply or Sync in the lower right corner of iTunes
Does this make any difference?

My laptop melted down recently and I had to restore it to factory settings. I lost my music including the iTunes library. I still have many iTunes tracks on my iPhone, but can't sync the phone with iTunes any more because a message appears saying I will lose all my iPhone tracks. iTunes will not transfer music not purchased from iTunes (ripped) music from your phone to your iTunes library. You will have to purchase 3rd party software such as Touch Copy to accomplish that. Why do Telephone contacts NOT sync with Contacts?

When someone calls me and I Create a new Contact from the phone number, the contact appears in the Phone App, but not in Contacts?

This started about a week ago, same time as when iMessage appeared on the desktop. iTunes and iPhone4s are both updated. I did the latest iTunes update last night hoping it would be fixed but still the same.
Settings iCloud both contact and calendars are turned on. iTunes is set up to back up to the Cloud. I've also switched to backing up to the Computer.
I change Calendar on the computer and it always syncs the iPhone. Contacts almost always add on the iPhone but they never sync to computer. I notice iMessage only shows contact names from before this happened. Otherwise it says the phone number on the desktop and the full contact on iPhone.
Any refs or suggestions much appreciated.
