cant play my music in itunes after copying to larger hard drive.

I'm guessing you moved rather than copying.
What steps exactly did you take?
If you moved the iTunes Media folder from <User's Music> iTunes to some random location then that is wrong way to do it. You haven't complained of an empty library so I'm guessing that's what you did.
What generally works is to move the entire iTunes folder to say X:\iTunes, and then hold down shift as you start iTunes. You should get a prompt asking you to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the moved library.
If you moved just the media folder then move the main iTunes folder, shift the media folder inside, then shift-start-iTunes. It should all come together.

New iMac. Flash drive is primary for OS and apps.  I want to use my HD 2 (1 TB hard drive) for my bulky photo and music files.  Can I direct iPhoto and iTunes to use the larger hard drive as the primary target when importing?

Yes.  Unfortunately, I don't know the specifics because I don't use iPhoto anymore and I completely copied over 15 years of MP3 files recently when I installed 10.7.  Needless to say, I have not opened iTunes since and probably never will again - not because of iTunes but because of my stupidity.  I did have some of the files backed up but I hadn't backed up in a while.......anyway....
When I imported my CD's, I had them go directly to my external firewire.  I can't remember exactly how to set it, but in the preference section of iTunes you can specify an import destination to any drive that's available to your machine.  I did this with iPhoto as well way back at one point when I was using Tiger, but I don't remember the specifics on that either.  I can't imagine they would have discontinued support for that feature since then.
    Sorry I couldn't help more.

  • "Original file not found" error after copying from removable hard drive

ok, I have all my itunes library on a removable hard drive, and I want to copy it all to my new computer. so, I plugged the hard drive in, copied all the files into itunes, and when I played one of them, it worked. then, I tried to play it again, but an error message came up saying "The song 'Re-hash'could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like tyo locate it?" and I clicked 'Yes'. then a browser came up, where i could select either the files itunes music, itunes library, or itunes music library. none of them work. help please?

This worked although it was very clumsy (we had almost 3,000 files that had to be deleted and redownloaded. I could not figure out a way to sort all of the 'exclamation points' together so it took an hour or so to scan through the entire library list and delete each file individually and/or in small groups.) The download was very straight forward. In my experience (with iTunes match turned on,) we did NOT loose our playcounts.
Going through all those files I noticed several common themes that may have triggered the problem: 1) multiple artists, 2) special characters in the song title, artist and/or album name - particularly umlauts (we have quite a few german songs in our library.) 3) very long title, artist and/or album names.
I hope that someone from Apple is aware of these issues and working on them....

  • All music (eg itunes library) on an external hard drive

    hello...
    i was thinking...i have an imac....and three ipods...and eventually i will buy a ipod video (i now have two nanos--my kids actually--and a ipod photo60gig)
....i was considering having all of my music (itunes library) on an external HD ...so whenever i want to alter music playlists, or add CD's, or buy music, music videos and so on.....i would plug in my external HD and then do my thing ..... and then plug in my ipod after that to sync it ....
...then i can physically have all of my music on a portable music device.
...i have only about 1,000 songs but a whole crapload of dig photos on my imac...
...i have intentions of putting on all of my CD collection (several hundred CD's) onto my itunes library but i am worried about bogging down my new imac in terms of memory and so on ....this is why i am thinking of using my external HewlittPackard HD (which is a removable dockable one made specifically for my HP computer--it glides into the tower)...
..can anyone give me some advice? thanks....
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You can ask iTunes to relocate your iTunes music folder from your computer to your external hard drive. So the next time iTunes looks for its music, it will look in the new place, which is the external hard drive instead of your computer's internal hard drive. Go to Preferences>Advanced. There is the location of the iTunes music folder. Change that location by pressing the brouse key and brouse to a location on your external hard drive. And everytime that iTunes opens, it will sync with the external hard drive for its music.

  • Rebuilding iTunes after Loss of External Hard Drive

    Hello Everyone
I have a problem similar to others I have seen addressed, but different, and I have not been able to find any place where it is addressed by Apple or in any of the discussions here.
Several weeks ago, I transferred, in the way that Apple directs, my iTunes media files (formerly called music files) to an external hard drive, leaving the other iTunes library files on my MacMini.  As a result, my iTunes app thinks the media files are on that external HD, and looks for them there (or should, but that may be an issue here, as I'll mention in a moment).
A week ago, the external HD died.  I have replaced it with a new HD and copied to it all the music files from my backup of them on Time Machine.
I do not know how to bring into alignment my iTunes library on the MacMini and the iTunes media files on my new external HD.
I experimented with renaming the new external HD, giving it the same name I had used for the old one, but that did not result in iTunes finding the music files. In the course of doing that, I doublechecked in the iTunes preferences, the 'advanced' ones, for the indicated location for the iTunes media folder.  Oddly, I thought, as I expected it still to include a reference to the old external HD, it simply reads as '/Users/russell/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media'.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Russell

Hello Limnos, and thank you for your additional help.
Unfortunately, my knowledge and experience are not enough that I was able to figure out and get comfortable with your suggested approach.
Basically I crawled into a hole and ignored the whole problem for a few days.
Today, I bit the other bullet and looked into restoring my iTunes using Time Machine.  I'll tell the story here both for your (possible) interest and on the chance that it might help someone else in future.
After moving my iTunes music files to the external drive that broke and then getting a new external drive, I moved all of my iPhoto photo files to the new external drive.
As a result, I had enough space again on my Mac's hard drive to put my music files there.  I decided to try to restore through Time Machine, as of a date just before I had moved my music files to the external drive, when iTunes existed entirely on my Mac's hard drive, my entire iTunes folder, with all its subfolders (not just the music files).  (Out of caution, when restoring I chose the option one is given of preserving my existing iTunes folder, but this proved to be a caution I did not in the end need.)
Following the restoration, which I just completed, iTunes is working as it should, with no broken links (yet - knock on wood).
All seems to have ended well, and I thank you again for your help.

  • Itunes library - copy to new hard drive

I have just had to install a new hard drive. I can still access my old one so have copied the contents of the itunes music folder to the new drive. Why can't I now see the contents of the itunes music folder in itunes library? Any assistance appreciated. Thank you

Connecting a full iPod to a blank iTunes could be fatal to the iPod's music.
No need to re-rip your music if all of it is still on the iPod....
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring playlists, ratings, playcounts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)

    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
XPlay (Software For Cross-Platform Functionality & Music Recovery)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?

  • Help!  Corrupted Clip Speed after Copying to New Hard Drives

Okay. Here goes... (sorry so long)
I bought two new hard drives to replace older aging ones as a precaution (for a Feature Film)
After transfering capture scratch and sequences-- every speed altered clip (50% was now 1000%) OR the in points and out points are not being recognized and have jumped to new spots in the clip (with the corruption)
I transfered 1st half of film buy hand-- Corrupted.
I transfered 2nd half using media manager-- Corrupted.
Two different hard Drives-- two different ways of trasfering-- same problem!
(also, no matter what I do to return the clips to their orignal state-- they remain screwy!)
-The "Constant settings" won't stay Constant and keep fliping to Varible. I stretch it out, speed drops to 10%. I drag the end of clip toward head, speed increases.
    Then the clip goes black!
    -I deleted Render Files.
    -I removed attributes.
-In Time Remap there were mysterious Keyframes that were the culpruts. I deleted but they fought being deleted.
I bought a ANOTHER Hard drive thinking the Brand I bought was not compatible with MAC (Mercury) -- Same problem with newest hard drive.
    Phew!
What is Going on??????!!!!!! Can ANYONE help Me???????

Keep CALM? If you knew what I've gone through to make this project...! Two YEARS! I've been working on this for two crippling years!!! I'm just about to finish... and tradegy strikes!!!!
I wasn't calm at the time... I am now. (thanks to Jack Daniels-- and five minutes of beating my head on a wall)
I tried the new sequence thing. Didn't work.
Regarding the FCPrescue program you speak of. I downloaded a similar one called FCPattic-- there are no instructions for either program on how they work... I have no idea what it did, but I pushed the backup button, but I don't know what was supposed to happen or where to retrieve any back up info...(?)
    Re: Trashing Preferences:
There are two files in the preferences folder...
    1. "com.apple.finalcut.plist"
    2. "final cut preferences" (which has a red and black icon)
I don't know which is the one I should trash?
Can you give me some insight?
    Thanks for responding, Andynick.

  • Put video files in iTunes without copying again to hard drive

I have a hefty amount of videos saved in a folder not associated with iTunes.   However, I purchased an Apple TV, so I'd like them to show up in iTunes now.  But I like the way they are organized in the other folder, for streaming to devices that read Windows Media Player.
What's the simplest way to make these files viewable in iTunes without having to double my hard drive usage? (I don't have the space).

Hmmmm... On a Mac you'd hold down the option key while dragging to iTunes.  I'm not sure about WIndows, but sometimes iTunes for Windows uses the shift key where the option key is used on the Mac.

  • LR3 can't find files after copying my previous hard drive to a new Lacie Thunderbolt drive

I transferred my LR3 files from my WD hard drive to my new Lacie Thunderbolt drive and now I can only get the preview and it says the file is missing.  Is there a setting I need to change that I am not aware of?

You have moved your image files outside of Lr (via your OS) and now Lr has lost the connection to your images. This happens every time you move images outside of Lr. Lr stores in its catalog - among all the other things - also the location of your images, and if the location stored in the catalog is different than the situation onyour hard drive you get the "missing" file message. "Missing" means that Lr does not "know" where your images are.
You have to point Lr to the location of your image files to fix the broken link.
In the Grid View (left side) in the folders panel you should see question marks in front of the folder names. That is Lr's indication that the link to the folders is broken.
Go to the top-most folder in the hierarchy of the folders that show the question mark and right-click it (click with the right-hand button of you rmouse). Select <Find missing folder> in the fly-out menu, navigate to the coresponding folder on your LaCie and click on it. Lr will then also find the sub-folders under that folder on idt own - provided that you have not changed the folder names or the folder structure.
If you have done that you have to "point" Lr to each folder individually with the procedure described above.
BTW you will also get the "missing" message when you open Lr but your external drive is not switched on.

After updating to ios 8 through itunes, I lost my music and now I cant transfer some music from itunes (macbook pro) to my iphone 4s back. Any idea how can I do that?

After posting this, I've since found out that my iOS iTunes App on my iPhone 6 Plus works all OK when on WiFi, it just won't work when on the data/3/4G connection.

I had all of my music on an external hard drive that crashed. I have iTunes Match so all of my music was synced in the cloud. How do I now re-load my music back down onto a new external hard drive?

    Hey Rbe58!
I believe this question can be answered by the information in the following article:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Access all your music anytime, anywhere with iTunes Match
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph12492
Play or download songs from iCloud
You can play songs directly from iCloud, or you can download songs so you can play them when you’re not connected to the Internet.
If a song is available in iCloud, it has a Download button next to it.
To play the song, double-click it.
To download the song, click the Download button.
After you download a song to a computer, it remains in the computer’s iTunes library, even if you turn off iTunes Match.
To only display downloaded songs in your iTunes library, choose View > Hide Music in the Cloud. This also hides any previous iTunes Store purchases you haven’t downloaded.
For information about downloading and playing songs on an iOS device, see the documentation for the device.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

    Correct.
After that just select the new folder location in iTunes> Advanced settings.
    Incorrect.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select the iTunes folder.
This will read the iTunes library.itl file in this folder and the library as it was previously will be opened.
